Paper Chase Seasons 3 and 4??
All,

This past week, I bought and watched Paper Chase Season 1 and must say that it was great! I look forward to Paper Chase Season 2 coming out next month; however, I noticed that there are still two more seasons afterwords.

I am inquiring as to if anyone knows if SHOUT! will be releasing Paper Chase Seasons 3 and 4?

Shout Factory! I'd love to see the release of Seasons Three and Four of "The Paper Chase," as well. The series is not only well-written, but its story lines have stood the test of time. Please consider releasing the final two seasons of this program.

My only question:  is it going to be available through retailers or ShoutSelect?

Perhaps Paper Chase Seasons 3 & 4 could be released through ShoutSelect, when they get around to them!

They should be released together in one final 6-disc set, since Season 3 had 12 episodes and Season 4 had only 6 episodes.

Fingers crossed!

Spread the word, gang.  In order to justify future volumes of The Paper Chase, we really need sales on our Shout! Select program to pick up.  I know the fans are out there!  If you love the show, fight the good fight!

I purchased Season 1 via Amazon.com and Season 2 at a Barnes and Noble store.  If buying Seasons 3 and 4 through Shout! Select (which I've just now learned about on this website) will make their release more likely, consider it done!  The Paper Chase was - at its best - the best written, most intelligent show on TV, cable or network.

If you're producing/releasing, I'm buying!

I really want to complete this series on disc.  If Shout!Select is the only way to do so, then I will be glad to.

Count me in, too. The Paper Chase has been one of my very favorite shows since it was originally on network television, and my admiration for it only grew when it continued on Showtime. I was thrilled when Shout Factory released the first two seasons. Please, please release the rest of this great series. There are only 18 unreleased episodes.... please don't leave us hanging much longer.

The Paper Chase isn't looking good.  Unfortunately, sales have been extremely low on these.  We'd love to keep working on them, because we've been watching the future seasons and think it's a great show.  But until we sell a lot more of S2, I'm afraid S3 will be cooling off at the back of the stove.  After all, traditionally, people won't buy S3 until they already own S2 and we've not sold enough of S2 to justify a third release, knowing that sales will drop from even that number.

Sorry, gang!

You can't even release it as a select title?  Both seasons 3 and 4 were shortened seasons so it would make sense to combine them onto one final set.  I mean seriously, you guys put out the thrid volume of Sonic, the 2nd season of Bill Cosby and The complete series of Bump In The Night?????  Paper Chase has to sell more than Bump in the Night and probably the three aformentioned shows combined.

I'm looking at the numbers and...not so much.  Don't discredit Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog.  That was an overwhelmingly popular seller for us.  In fact, Shout! Factory started going after '80s and '90s toons, due to the success we had with the various Super Mario Bros. and Sonic the Hedgehog titles.  But, even if you split the titles up, The Paper Chase just didn't sell well.  Doesn't mean it's not an excellent series.  Doesn't even mean it's not a superior series to some--if not most (or all)--Saturday morning cartoons.  It just means that not as many people are as interested in owning a drama about law school as there people wanting series that made them happy as children.  Never underestimate the power of childhood nostalgia.

Thanks, Brian, for the information. It was not what so many of us were hoping to hear, but at least we know where we stand.

Now I know I'm grasping at straws here, but would it be possible for Shout! Factory to put out the rest of The Paper Chase (and perhaps other programs that have not sold as well as you originally hoped) on a made-as-ordered basis? As people order a set, you manufacture the discs, package them and ship them out. To cover your costs and make a profit, the sets would probably be a bit more expensive then if they were released through more traditional means, but at least those fans who want them badly enough would have the opportunity. Warner Bros. has had some success with a mail-order program like this. I have ordered a few titles directly from them like this that probably would never have seen the light of day through traditional release channels. I don't pretend to know all of the ins and outs of how something like this would work, but if you already have the rights to The Paper Chase, this would be one way to release the rest of the series in a way that would cost you next to nothing. Just an idea. What do you think?

I'm sorry for those who are hoping that the other seasons would come out soon, but truthfully, S1 was the only season I wanted to have, because to me the original CBS version and the Showtime version are two different shows entirely.    When I watched the show originally on Showtime in the mid-80s after being introduced to S1 during its repeats on PBS in the early 80s (which was the impetus for the Showtime revival), I was frankly put off by how in the world of cable we now had all kinds of extra gratuitous language and sexual situations that the CBS version had been free of.      Frankly, seeing Hart use profanity and sleep around destroyed the essence of the naive, midwestern innocent he was in the original, and also the show became too much of a political soapbox for my taste, whereas the original managed to be refreshingly free of an overt political bias.    So for me, "Paper Chase" has been completed from my standpoint.

I think that I'll just go ahead and transfer my off-air records from Showtime for the last 2 seasons and live with it that way and everyone else should probably just do the same. Luckily the show ran in the 80s and not the 60s so at least we were able to make our own recordings of it.

I have been waiting for this series for years and years.  Many times I almost plunked down the huge amounts for the bootleg options out there.  It was only earlier this year that I noticed Seasons 1 and 2 were released by Shout.  I now own them and am starting Season 2.  I lived this series before law school and during law school.  Reruns ended sometime in the mid-90's.  Now Shout has done an amazing thing.  But stopping short is so disheartening.  I understand the profit aspect.  Something has to be worth while to do it.  But to leave a series incomplete has such an air of emptiness.  To have something complete, whole, is to have something worth while.  Surely there is some argument to be made that sales for a complete series would justify finishing what was started.  I'll continue to wait.  And will undoubtably post again.  The Shout series needs that third year.

David, you certainly speak the truth.  Such is the way of the entertainment industry.  I'm sure fans of canceled television series would love completion, in general.  The same goes for canceled or postponed runs of DVDs.  But the state of DVD sales is quickly headed into the same territory that CDs headed into a handful of years back.  Sales are not good.  And until this economy picks up, we're left trying desperately to figure out how to get fans what they want.

Brian, does your relationship with Fox also have anything to do with why there hasn't been anymore of this show as of right now? Just curious. I get the feeling that your relationship with the company is the worst of all the major studios you've dealt with. I hope I'm wrong.

Nope.  Shout and Fox are both in good standing with one another.  It's just that The Paper Chase was acquired in the same deal as several other Fox titles.  And it just didn't sell as well as some of those others.  While Mr. Belvedere and Rhoda continued to do fairly well, shows like The Paper Chase and Room 222 didn't.  It been nothing personal on either end.

Of course Paper Chase and Room 222 didn't sell well. They are well written, intelligent shows which appeal to bright people. Dopey shows like Gilligan's Island, etc., have a far greater audience and fan base as there are far more people out there for those types of shows. As to DVD sales, well, if you are a TV collector and you limit yourself to only what is on DVD, that's like collecting music and only collecting CDs. If you really are about the hobby, there is VHS, Beta, 3/4, 16mm and plenty of other formats to acquire shows on. Of course DVDs of Room 222 are preferable to old off-air copies from USA network but if the last 3 seasons never come out, they are certainly a decent alternative.

Yeah, the smart shows seem to lose both on the networks and on DVD.  There have been notable exceptions, but the majority of them were canceled after only one season, so their popularity really gets a chance to shine when they're released on DVD.

I got seasons 1 & 2 on amazon - are those sales factored into your numbers?

I do hope 3 & 4 will come out. I remember having some problems with the Lainie Kazan character but the biggest headache was waiting for the next new episode to air. Something to look forward to is the episode where Bell performs his imitation of Kingsfield in a student show.

I wish the show was super-successful so we could get some commentaries or a retrospective. I see some of the actors frequently on tv and it would be nice to catch up with them.

Probably the most intelligently written show in the history of television - no wonder it never sold well - people want tripe (in current programming:  reality) and not something that is worthwhile.  I recorded all these shows on VHS, when they came out but like so many others, no longer have a working tape player (tried to find one lately?), so I can't even watch the remainder of the series that way.  Giving us Season 1 and 2, but not the whole package is a disservice to those of us who bought the first two years.  I'd gladly pay a premium price for a package containing Seasons 3 & 4 (you're more than welcome to use my tapes so you don't get episodes with "nasty" words removed like in Series 2) and I wonder how many others would be willing to do the same!  The absence of the complete series - my favorite all-time program, by the way - leaves a gaping hole in my DVD collection.  Can't you do something to help us long-suffering fans out?

Brian, I hope you realize how dedicated the fan base is for The Paper Chase, based on all of the comments written here and on the "TV From the 1980s" thread. I certainly understand your business needs, but as you have pointed out this is an intelligent program, and it is most certainly appreciated by a more intelligent (and as a result more affluent) fan base. Even though it may not sell well enough to release it through traditional channels at what would be considered a "normal" price, I believe most fans who purchased the first two seasons would be interested in paying a "premium" price for the remainder of the series. Perhaps you could consider a smaller run of seasons 3-4 at a higher price, or maybe you could release through a made-as-ordered program similar to what some other DVD studios do (most notably Warner Bros. Select), again at a higher price. Please don't write off The Paper Chase too quickly. You are so close to finishing the run, and it would mean so much to quite a lot of people (although apparently not enough). Happy Holidays!

I honestly hope someone does the right thing and releases Seasons 3/4 of Paper Chase.  I loved this show when it was on and to this day I don't tire of rereading it.  I personally know 4 people who are anxiously awaiting it's release.  Our assumption is that S3/4 would be released as one package since they were substantially cut short.  Another series this is happening to is Early Edition which is also unfortunate.

Also would help the cause of boosting sales if you allowed us Aussies to purchase from your Select store. Tried to get Room 222 Season 2 but couldn't get through the checkout as I was "in Australia". Puzzling too as Australia could be selected from the checkout pulldown menu. I managed to get the DVDs via a third party retailer. Cheers.

In order to legally sell to Australia, we have to have the worldwide license.  FOX has reserved the licenses for all territories, except North America, for either themselves or DVD labels in those territories.  Trust me, it wasn't like we simply chose not to.

That being said, Amazon ships to Australia.

Brian,

Have you tried approaching PBS Video about offering The Paper Chase Series in their DVD catalogue? Given that PBS carried the series many years ago, they may be willing to help distribute the series. It seems like the perfect demographic for this acclaimed series --- just a thought.

Brian, Scooby has an excellent idea!  I also would suggest advertising the DVD sets to the legal community through law journals and websites.  As someone who attended law school in the early 1980's, I love this show and know that many of my contemporaries also are fans.  I purchased seasons 1 and 2 as soon as I learned they were available.  I would be happy to purchase the remainder of the series, even at a premium price.

I wanted to bring this topic back up near the top, and ask everyone interested to continue to let the fine folks at Shout! Factory know that "The Paper Chase" is worth finishing. Season 3 and 4 were both short seasons, so it could be completed with just one more set. Please, please don't let this series go unfinished.

Brian, I am in the industry, and I can pull a favor.  I wonder if you would be willing to loan me the D5 masters of seasons three and four, or whatever format they are on.  I can ask one of my vendors to master them on DVD.  If you're willing, you can give a small percentage of each sale to my vendor.  I want nothing but a set of seasons three and four out of the deal.  I am willing to sign whatever you need me to sign.  I am happy to provide references both personal and professional.  Please let me know if I can be of assistance in making this happen, and thus get myself the episodes I've long been hoping to own.

A P.S., Mr. Ward: I'm assuming that the show has been transferred to video.  If you have the masters as a 16mm or 35mm print, I understand why you haven't transferred them.  That would be a tough favor for me to pull.  But if they are on any digital format at all, I would be excited and honored to assist.

Has it ever occured to you Brian, that people may be reluctant to purchase Seasons 1 & 2 until they are sure that they wont be left swinging in the breeze, never able to conclude the experience? I, for one, am in that category. Series one was shown here in Australia & had me hooked, only to never return. I dont want to go thru that again. When you get it together & ensure that I will be able to see the show series from beggining to end, I will happily purchase the lot. How would you go trying to sell 2 thirds of a movie mate, without guaranteeing the conclusion would be available for viewing? Or half a book? I can only imagine what it does for your reputation & credibility as an enterprise to leave your clientele hanging in the lurch this way. Pretty damaging from a "word of mouth" business perspective I'd think. Come on shoutfactory, do the right thing by your customers, even if it isn't
super profitable. Even if you just break even, it's gotta be worth it to have happy customers & therefore, in repeat business.                                                                                                                                                                                  Cheers, Col.

How many times do I have to say this to people on these forums? Shout! Factory is a business. If a business invests money in a product that does not make money for them, they will not invest more money in it. It's as simple as that. Will it make collectors mad? Sure it will. But let's be honest, collectors are a bitchy bunch of people and if they don't get pissed off about one thing, they'll get pissed off about another. You're never going to actually make them happy for the long term unless you decide to release every single TV show that ever garnered at least five fans.

Let's just put it this way: Shout! could do what you suggest by finishing off every single show it begins, and they could lose a crap ton of money; or, Shout! could decide to just release what they predict will make them money, and we stand a larger chance of seeing many future releases from them. Considering Shout! Factory is an indie company that has considerably lower profit margins than the major companies (which, coincidentally, is the entire reason they can manage to do the releases they can), I'd rather they go with the latter choice.

It sucks to not have a favorite show finished (and trust me, I understand this well), but that's life for you. Just suck it up and be happy with what you have.

Count me as one more who would definitely buy Seasons 3 and 4 in a heartbeat.  I would really love to have this to complete the full run of the show, but I also understand the realities of where you are coming from on the business side of this.  So here's an idea.  Is there some way that you could offer a link on your website where people could "pre-order" the Paper Chase Season 3/4 disc, so that you can get a definitive count of how many you would be sure to sell if you released it (i.e., at least enough to cover the cost of production)?  I would even be willing to pre-pay for the disc, if there was an understanding that if (after 8 months or so) there are not enough pre-orders to justify the production, then I could get my money refunded or credited back for use on the purchase of another show on your website.  In other words, have the fans who want this disc released put their money where their mouth is.  I would be willing to.  How many guaranteed sales would you need to book in order to justify releasing the disc?

There was another good idea posted on another thread:  release the Season 3 and Season 4 episodes for sale on iTunes (or release the individual episodes for direct sale and download through your own website).

RE: Paper Chase Seasons 3 and 4?? Brian, please read!!
I would dearly welcome Seasons 3 & 4.  Here's yet another idea.  Archiv Music sells made-to-order CDs of out-of-print classical music.  If I want an out-of-print CD, I order it, and they make it and send it to me.  They're not cheap, but if a collector wants it she/he will pay for it.  You could increase your margin and still sell apparently a large number of the made-to-order DVDs to the people who are on this site, to people who have bought the Paper Chase seasons 1 & 2 from Amazon, Daedalus, Barnes and Noble, etc.  Thanks for considering this.

I'm just going to transfer my off-air records from Showtime for the last 2 seasons and that's probably what the rest of you fans should do as well.

I hope they release the last two seasons soon.  This was a terrific series and deserves to be released in its entirety.

A simple way to get people to buy season-2 is to put season-1 on Netflix streaming... But what Shout should have done initially is release it as a complete series boxed set instead of individual seasons.

RE: Paper Chase Seasons 3 and 4??
Brian, I did not mean to offend you or break bad about Shout! Factory (You guys are the absolute bomb when it comes to good TV-DVDS, I love you guys), and if I did, I am truly sorry.

I meant to say that if you're putting out season after season of one show that's not really that popular and ignore another or stall the remainder of a more acclaimed show for the sake of "Pap sells", then it does not make sense to me. If you start a show, complete it. That's why people get pissed off at these companies.

I'm a straight up buyer of DVDs. I guess I was just looking at the recent string of titles on the TV-DVD release list and I wonder "why isn't this show complete?" or "This show shouldn't even be out on DVD yet". I feel like if I see one more re-release of "Friends" or "Seinfeld" or some of the newer comedies or shows, I would just scream. I even called some of these companies and wrote to some of these companies about stalled titles and seasons. I'm on message boards of these various shows and I constantly hear "This shows needs to be completed" or "The companies don't care as long as they sell crap".

I try to be a defender of the classic shows because I feel that they are not getting the due respect or attention they deserve. And I know that "Classic shows don't sell as well as contemporary shows" and all that rhetoric. But if it wasn't for these older shows, you wouldn't have the contemporary stuff. I'm not an economics major but I do say this: People today like to look back to a simpler time and they do pay good money for shows or movies or music that they used to like (I don't care what anyone says about people growing out of shows or music they used to like), nostalgia is where the real money is. Why do you think shows like "Happy Days" or "The Wonder Years" or "That 70's Show" were successful as they were? Nostalgia!

I'm just saying Don't throw your old shows away or don't leave them in the dust. Have lots of faith and not to panic when things go wrong. Make lemonade out of the lemons. Start expecting the unexpected. Believe me, the buyers haven't left. They are merely waiting for the next season or another great classic to come out. You will see a BIG RESURGENCE in the TV-DVD market if you just have faith in the titles you got. I'm not just talking to Shout! I'm talking to all the companies out there. If you work on your older stuff, you will then see people buying the newer stuff as well.

Why give a link and say "read more," when all you did was copy and paste this in another thread?

I was repeating myself.

Basically, all I was saying is that the TV-on-DVD buyers have NOT stopped buying DVDs. They are just waiting for their favorite shows or the next best thing to come out. People are waiting for the shows to be un-stalled. Recession my ass.

To repeat what I just wrote on another thread, count me in as a sure-thing buyer of Seasons 3 and 4 - on this website or from another retailer if required.

RE: Paper Chase Seasons 3 and 4??

I posted nearly a year ago on this board about this show.  I was in college when the 1st season ran on CBS.  Even though I was nt in law school, the show captured the college experience so realistically.  I was truly upset that Mr. Hart was denied his graduation by the cancellation of the show.  I was pleased when Showtime announced the continuation of Mr. Hart's education and began showing the repeats.  I subscribed to Showtime just for that reason.  It was bittersweet when graduation day rolled around.

It is again a bittersweet memory that I look at my shelf and only see the first 2 seasons of the show sitting there.  I am not sure how many copies need to sell, but I would hope that enough are sold so that I can again see the conclusion of this intelligent series.

I would not hesitate to purchase this show through whatever means ( Shout!Select or regular dvd's).  I would jist like to finish this show.

I absolutely adored the series, thanks to the contribution of John Houseman, and would buy a DVD Box Set for the entire series. I recall a similar campaign was waged for the release of the animated series "Daria", another of my favourites, and thankfully the entire series has been released.

Hopefully, common sense will prevail. Unfortunately, if the company does not service the demand for the series, then fans may access the media content from the illegal market which I frankly hate. Why should some novice, having copied amateur recordings from a broadcast, and having burned them onto DVD, make a profit out of the company when the copyright lawfully and legally belongs to the copyright holder. Worse still - what if someone obtained a Master Tape, and uses this to generate first generation copies. Sacrilege !!!!

Although I would prefer to buy a physical copy of the series in DVD format, I would (all things being equal) buy an electronic copy from a legitimate distribution source.

Come on.... release the entire series. Lets not give the illegal market a chance here.

Paperchase fans are die hard fans.  The biggest issue is to communicate their release.  I am a die hard fan and have purchased the first two seasons.  Whatever or however you release, remember all these posts should be considered as defininite sales.  Please look at this again and maybe consider a different means of communicating your offer.

I don't believe this is the real Brian Ward folks, check out his "Member Since", it says 7/18/11 which is today.  I think we got ourselves an imposter.  He's been posting all kinds of questionable stuff on these boards today.

Hey SHOUT FACTORY, you guys might want to clean up this problem before this imposter gives you and the real Brian a bad name.

Does anyone know of a website to download the remaining seasons? or other sellers of the movie from Showtime (via VHS)? - At this point, I just want to finish watching the remainder of the seasons even if its not dvd quality.

Um, Dirk, FYI, no one (and I mean no one) in this thread ever said or implied that Shout! Factory is a non-profit organization, and that they cater to everyone.

Zaxxar, my full response to your statement is forthcoming. However, be aware that it may take up to five months to be completely formulated. I apologize if this inconveniences you.

Please add me to the list of people waiting for Seasons 3 & 4 to be released. But I won't purchase the first two seasons until they do. There are probably many others like me that are eager for the whole series but don't to buy and watch the first two seasons, then be left hanging with no conclusion to the series. So, if you make the whole series available, it may increase the sales of the first two seasons also.

But if you don't buy seasons 1 & 2 new, it will take even longer for seasons 3 & 4 to come out than it should.

RE: English subtitles?

Hey guys! I've just asked somewhere else, but for some reason that thread didn't get bumped (is that even possible?) or I can't find it, so I'll just ask again...

Could anyone who has bought the first two seasons of The Paper Chase please confirm if they come with English subtitles/CC's?

Thanks in advance!

Haven't brought this up in a while. How about some "Paper Chase" for Christmas? Shout Factory could make a lot of fans of this show very happy for the holidays by announcing the release of the final episodes. How about it? A little holiday cheer will pay dividends. Please release the remaining episodes.

I see seasons 3 and 4 are available at www.IMDb.com which is an Amazon.com company.
I wonder why they aren't available in Canada/U.S.?
