Rights issues with certain MST3K episodes.

Kind of confused about the rights to certain episodes of MST3K and why they would never come to DVD.  If the rights are so hard to obtain. How where they ever allowed to air on T.V in the first place? Or shown in reruns after ? I just don't get it I guess.

The TV rights are owned by Paul 'Little Peli" Pantoski, who traded Jim Mallon a 1987 Honda Accord for them. He was ok with TV broadcast, but does not like the "dvd" format. He is more a fan of pantomime. Thankfully BrAIN Ward and PT Shoutfactory (the owner of shoutfactory) are able to sneak in to Pantoski's mansion every few months, and with the help of their monkey butler and some high grade opium, secure the video rights to a select few films. Its really not that complicated.

Rights are a difficult thing to grasp sometimes.  Ultimately, it comes down to this: it's far more expensive for someone to get the rights to release something on home video than to simply air it on television, because you're going to be making money from it.  In some cases, license holders don't mind you paying a fee to air it, but certainly don't want you making money on a movie that belongs to them.  So we have to go in and acquire those rights.  All Jim Mallon owns is the host segments and the MST3K content within the movie.  He doesn't own the movies playing.  So, we have to go get that permission.  Some folks don't want to give it.  Some don't like what MST did to their flicks.  Others are dead and their estates want too much money.  It's hard to say.  But some films are expected to unreleased, for these reasons.

Thanks for the info. After finding out that the "Final Sacrifice" episode may never see the light of day,  I got kind of put off and disappointed. Shame that the rights holder of the movie still thinks of it as a piece of ...........eh, ART, Oh well.  Keep up the good work and box sets coming ! Still holding out slim hope for the Final Sacrifice.

PS. Will there ever be a scene selection menu ?

We've been trying to figure out the best way to incorporate a scene selection, but I've not been happy thus far. The ability to chapter forward has seemed fairly sufficient to me, especially since the chapter breaks have always been at pretty recognizable points throughout the episodes. I can tell you that XVI will not have them, but it's possible that XVII could. We'll see and I'll keep you informed.

Hi Brian
Happy Thanksgiving :-)
I am curious about something..so far we know that Final Sacrifice and the Gamera series will not come to DVD as MST3K versions
Are there any more titles that you can tell us to basically not to hold our breath, ones that will not get released ?
I only ask since you mentioned Gamera in another thread
Thanks

And correct me if I'm wrong but some movies can't be cleared because some movies rightsholders remain unknown.

And Happy Thanksgiving to you. I cannot in good conscience tell you any titles that may or may not hit the sets. I say that because titles we once thought were unattainable may not be in the long run. We're thoroughly investigating all options.

"Finally Christmas Comes To Santa" via March 2010 !   Excellent ! I feel like I just turned 39 again !  Keep up the good work and stuff !

Have any breakthroughs been made in the 'scene selection' department?  Don't get me wrong, I love the new sets, but I really miss being able to jump to my favorite sketches without searching through the chapter stops.  Any word?
