The Adventures of Sonic... titles didn't sell particularly well for us. But we think there's still some mileage in the possibility of a third volume. So it may come out. We're exploring options. Retail will expect a certain number being produced, which is often a number higher than we know we'd sell. So I don't know. Maybe something like direct to consumer would work. What do you guys think? Would you buy it directly from the website, instead of going to the stores or Amazon?

Brian isn't this what World Events Production is doing with Denver the Last Dinosaur ??
http://store.voltron.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=68
This DVDs are online exclusivly and is sold only by WEP directly (see link) or by Amazon , but amazon has a much higher price
Their other more well known titles live VOTRON or Saber Rider are sold as normal releases AFAIK so doing this with their least popular titel is pretty smart I guess
And Brian if you guys do this wouldn't it be smart to make them Region 0 so perhaps europeans, australians could buy such stuff so you could increase your profit margins too ???

It is much more of a hassle to do via mail than it is just going back to the store you bought it from. That is why I wouldn't buy big ticket items like the Transformers or G.I. Joe box sets directly from Shout! Although I would prefer a retail store, I would not have issues buying cheaper items from Shout! I'm not much of a Sonic fan, but if you finished off C.O.P.S., I would buy it. It beats not having it at all.

WHAT? Shout! isnt selling moonshine over the internet (although that is a great idea. Brain Ward, jump on that). Do you think that you would order it and nothing would come or instead of Sonic The Hedgehog you would get a crudley animated, profanity-laded show called Stonic da Shrubberyhog? This isnt going to happen, no matter how awesome it would be. So just plunk down your $200 for the single dvd of Sonic and lets all call it a day.

Then I had to wait forever for the Giant Gila Monster Disc. That was my major complaint with Rhino was their inability to tell me the truth. If this topic of discussion involves buying it from the Shout Factory website, then I would be all for that. If it means only getting it from Amazon.com I'd be for that too. I am surprised that people still travel to brick and border stores to buy things. I figure its cheaper on Amazon.com, there is no tax and usually no shipping. So yeah, in short, I'd gladly get them online, since...well that is where I purchased my last 10 shout factory dvds from.
Now, someone may have suggested or hinted at Shout doing DVD on demand where an order is placed on your website and Shout presses a DVD-R. Yeah its not pretty, but its mastered from the same masters they would have used commercially. Only drawback is that it wouldn't look nice on the shelf, but we would have the complete series then. Fair trade, I'd say so, but only as a last resort.
I appreciate Brian and Shout responded to fans regarding this series. It is sooo close to being completed and he is fighting for us.

So YES PLEASE to the direct order idea. I've been saying for months that something like that (or some kind of on-demand system like createspace) would be a good option for finishing off some of these collections that have been in limbo for minimal cost to Shout Factory.

They do books, CDs and DVDs. Great for indie writers, musicians and filmmakers who want to distribute their stuff themselves.
Nickelodeon actually started using them recently to release season sets of a lot of their shows that there was fan demand for, but not enough to market as a "proper" release. You get full packaging with artwork and everything, the only difference is it's a DVD-R instead of a mass-produced DVD. But still pretty much the same as what you might get in a store. And official, since it's from the actual company and not some shady bootlegger.
The advantage for a big company using it is simple - no overhead other than the initial mastering fee, which is quite low to begin with, to get your disc finalized for their system. I think it would be a great way for Shout to be able to complete a lot of sets currently in limbo, since they already HAVE the rights to those shows. It would be a shame for the licenses to expire before anything is done with them...

Make no mistake. These would NOT be DVD-Rs. They would be no different than what you find in stores, except in regards to packaging, possibly. Perhaps to save a little in the cost of manufacturing, we'd go with what's called a Vivipak, which is like a big amaray with several trays worth of discs, instead of a slipcase with multiple slimpaks. But the discs themselves would be genuinely authored discs, no different than anything we've ever produced for retail.

I think if fans want a particular title and the website is the only way to get it, they will then get it. Obviously the sales numbers wouldn't be as large as a regular retail release, but the fans who really want the title will be able to get it. I even bought a MOD title from the Warner Bros archive, and that's something I'd never thought I'd do. Yet I did it because that was the only way to get an offical copy of that title.

I'm rather surprised there is such a resistance to online purchasing these days (08/02/99 - My First Online Purchase, CDNOW :) ). Many a times these exclusive items still seem to find there way onto Amazon.com from 3rd party sellers or even eBay. So if you have an account there and you trust them, it will still work out. This could sound promising.

I think its my turn to put in my 2 cents. Ok I'm all for the buying AoStH vol 3 on Shout!'s website or even to do the on-demand stuff. I would agree with some of the reasons why people are finiky (sp?) about purchasing stuff over the internet and that they would rather go to a brick and mortar store just to purchase what they need, so I can understand where they are coming from. However seeing that the options are very limited right now, I myself wouldn't mind an online purchase just to complete my collection. So if there is going to be a final choice to be made I will back Shout! on it 100%

However; Brian, since you say that you tend to manufacture more than you think you'd sell why not sell on both Shout and Amazon.com? That way it's more available to both the die hard fans (who would obviously buy from the site) and the casual fans who want to buy all three volumes at once.
It's just a thought.
Also I know some people are wary about buying from online and I am to, so you just have to ask yourself: Is it worth it? If 'yes' then you take the risk. I've lost money from items never sent and items damaged from Amazon.com and Ebay, but it's still worth it, a 'live and learn' kind of thing, you tend to pick up an intuitive sense of what sellers are most likely to get your item to you undamaged and which you should avoid at first glance. |

Member since: 4/2/2007 | | RE: Are there still plans to release Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog Vol. 3? | Whenever something is shipped from an online store or seller, there is always a risk of things being damaged. eBay especially with sellers already charging insane shipping costs and using cheap shipping materials to maximize profit.
Amazon.com has one of the best PR departments ever established. If you buy something directly from Amazon.com and it arrives damaged or is incorrect, they will send out a replacement and pay for the return shipping back of the defective item. Now, item's purchased from 3rd party sellers on Amazon.com. That is a different story. I'm sure if Shout would partner with Amazon.com they would use the "Fulfillment by Amazon" business partnership. In the age of credit card protection and even alternative payment methods like PayPal, buying online should be a no brainer. I think there were estimates that it cost something to the effect of .60 cents a mile to drive somewhere. This combines gas with wear and tear on the vehicle. So factor that into the cost of purchasing an item from a store.

Member since: 1/19/2008 | | RE: Are there still plans to release Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog Vol. 3? | Hi everyone, I haven't been here for a while.
Anyway, I would personally prefer to go to a store to get AoSTH vol. 3. However, I have ordered online before, and with a couple of exceptions (both involving pre-ordering), I have had satsifactory experiences. With this in mind, if buying it directly from Shout (or Amazon) was really the only way to get it, then I would gladly take that option, as long as it was reasonably priced ($30-$25 or lower). I haven't ordered from the Shout! Factory online store, but I have ordered from Amazon (and the marketplace), and I had no problems with either Amazon itself, or the sellers I purchased from.
That said, I really hope that AoSTH vol 3. will come out soon, even if it meant we could only get it from directly Shout and/or Amazon. Also, if it does come to direct-to-consumer being the only option, maybe you could also release the rest of Jayce and the Wheeled Warriors this way, and maybe even all the other DIC stuff Shout (still) has the rights to (like the rest of Heathcliff, if Shout still has that).
BTW, somewhat off-topic, but there is an alternate way to order online if you don't like using credit cards (or even ATM check cards). You could always buy yourself a gift certificate, and use that to order online. Now, while there are ones that are not specific to a particular store, for ones from credit card companies (i.e., Visa, AmEx) you usually have to pay a fee to activate it, and depending on the certificate itself, even a monthly fee to maintain it (unless you plan to use it only once).
Back on topic, I'm not sure about the "manufacture on-demand" model yet, but if direct-to-consumer was the only way, then I would definitely get AoSTH vol. 3 that way. |

I just wanted to be another person to state that I think it's a great idea to release AoStH Vol. 3 via the site. As someone who is no stranger to ordering things online (I ordered the SatAM, AoStH and Underground box sets online as well), I would have absolutely no problem with ordering the box set from the site as opposed to getting it from brick and mortar stores. Heck, I'd prefer it actually. Also, I'd like to mention, I'm in a Sonic fan community on LJ, and if Vol. 3 does end up being released via this site, I'll be sure to let them know about it. I know there's people who'd be interested. So, I hope you'll pursue this option, but I know it's not up to me. Just letting you know there is interest.
Also, I just wanted to add: Thanks a lot Brian, you and Shout! have done a great job with these box sets. It was a dream come true getting SatAM on dvd, and I really appreciate the work you put into making it happen. Thanks again. |

I'd buy it from Shout's site, but I would like to see some nice bonus features. It would be great it you interviewed some more people who on the show, like Kent Butterworth or Eddie Fitzgerald. Cover art by Kent Butterworth or Eddie Fitzgerald or Milton Knight would be way past cool, and (at least IMHO) be more interesting than the stock-looking art on the first two volumes.

This is one of those series we'd like to see completed. It's tricky.

I have no problem with the set being minimized in terms of packaging to cut costs, nor do I have a problem with such titles being web-only special orders. Bottom line is, if it means we can finally see some of these sets completed, I'm all for it!

No, no, no...

That's cool that they would be regular DVDs. The general consensus seems to be that although people would prefer buying via a retail store, people would buy from Shout directly if that were the only means to get the finish of shows such as Sonic, C.O.P.S., and Jayce. So go ahead and finish them up for us... |

You can slap the episodes onto a couple blank DVDs and throw them into CD cases and I'll buy them, as long as I can own the final part of the series legally. |

I just wanted to chime in to say that I would also buy the Adventures of Sonic vol 3 direct from Shout if you guys went that route.
It's the collection that I'd most like to see, but also would love to see continuations of Jayce and C.O.P.S. come the same way if it worked out well for you. |

I have volumes 1 and 2 already, plus Sonic the Hedgehog the Complete Series (my very favorite) and both volumes of Sonic Underground. I'm happy that Shout Factory has been able to release those.
Here's hoping volume 3 comes out one day!

I am completely behind the online method of selling AoStH V3. I would buy it day one. Completing that series has been something I've been wanting to do since V2 released a year ago.
YES on AoStH online sales! :D |
