Phyllis on DVD: It is time

Kudos to Shout! Factory for putting out seasons one and two of Rhoda on DVD.  Now it's time to put out seasons one and two of Phyllis!

I also must admit Phyllis definatley needs an realease. I would definetly buy it if it were to come on DVD. Cloris Leachman at her best! Great writing too, no need to be cancelled.

Loved this show when I caught it on re-runus on Nick@Nite back around 12 years or so ago. I would buy every season in a heartbeat. Same with the Betty White Show. Glorious TV!

So cool to see requests for the fabulous PHYLLIS! The show should have been given another chance, just like RHODA. Cut from the CBS lineup prematurely. Fans will definately smack down cash for a dvd release!

Yes, a complete series would be great. Well into her '80s, Cloris still has a pretty high profile, like Betty White.

Yes!  I vote for Phyllis!  She was funnier in her own show than on MTM.  I always liked Valerie Harper, but Rhoda never was a good show.  Valerie was though.

Yes, please release 'Phyllis' starring Cloris Leachman on DVD.  Phyllis was always my favourite of the three (Mary, Rhoda & Phyllis).  Cloris Leachman's acting as Phyllis was incredible.  If  "Phyllis" was released, I would also buy "Rhoda" as well.

RE: Phyllis on DVD: It is time (Re: Barbara Colby's murder)

Just curious to know if any diehard fans of the show here in this thread have ever seen the short on camera spot Cloris Leachman filmed addressing Barbara Colby's murder and the producers' decision to recast the Julie Erskine role.

I read about this many years ago in some TV trivia book but have never seen it myself.  If I remember correctly the details as presented, it would have aired on CBS in prime time only once, presumably at the start of the episode where Liz Torres took over the part.  It makes sense that this wouldn't have shown up in syndication but, should Shout! decide to put a Season One set together, this would be interesting as a sort of historical footnote bonus feature - IF the segment does in fact exist and I didn't just dream all this up after eating too much pizza.

Is there anyone here who has seen this and can verify?

-Thanks

I  read about this years ago but if I recall, at the last minute CBS decided not to air Cloris' speech because they felt it was too depressing for a comedy show. I didn't see the original airing so need someone else to verify.

I completely agree!    While I was never wild about Rhoda's show, Phyllis' sitcom was damned funny - from the in-laws to the grandmother in law it was all funny.

This definately should be looked at for release!!

Perhaps when Shout! releases all five seasons of Rhoda on DVD, they may look into Phyllis!

Fox will only hold it back!

RE: Phyllis on DVD: It is time

I just discovered that Phyllis is running on the cable channel ALN (formerly Nostalgia Channel and a few other names).  Rhoda comes on right afterward.  Apparently they have been running it since January 2010.  I didn't know this channel was on my lineup.

Currently it is running at 10am and 5pm (EST) and the episodes appear to be uncut because they don't have a lot of commercials or breaks.  They are now near the end of Season One so it must have been rerun a few times since there were only two seasons.

I agree with everyone - "PHYLLIS" needs to come out on DVD. I would buy it in a heartbeat. It is my #1 most wanted show now. Since Shout Factory is releasing Rhoda (and now Season 4 is coming out) - please start releasing "Phyllis" next! Back in the '70s, I thought "Mary Tyler Moore", "Phyllis" &"Rhoda" were equally funny, but watching them in the '90s, I found PHYLLIS was the funniest one of them all - and Mother Dexter was hysterical! So, please, Shout Factory, release "Phyllis" - both seasons, as soon as possible!

RE: Phyllis on DVD: It is time

With The Mary Tyler Moore Show being completed on DVD by Fox this October, hopefully in 2011 Phyllis see a DVD release, once Shout! Factory is complete with Rhoda.

The first 6 seasons of The Mary Tyler Moore Show were released by Fox, with the Seventh & Final Season being released this October!

The first 3 seasons of Rhoda were released by Shout! Factory, with the next-to-last season (four) coming out later in 2010 as a Shout! Select title, so you will have to order Rhoda Season 4 online at Shout! Factory's web page, once the title becomes available!

RE: Phyllis on DVD: It is time

An interesting note about "Phyllis" - according to the website, the70sproject.com, the first season of "Phyllis" (1975-1976) ranked #6 for the whole year. That's amazingly well! Also of note is that the same year "Rhoda" ranked #8, which means "Phyllis" actually had more viewers than "Rhoda" in 1975-1976. This was Rhoda's second season. For Rhoda's first season, the show ranked #6 - exactly the same ranking that "Phyllis" achieved a year later during its first season. I had no idea that "Phyllis" season 1 did so well. Just another great reason why Shout Factory should release it. When you think of all the 1975 shows that ranked at #7 through #100 that have been released on DVD, I think that a show that performed better than all of them should be released, too.

RE: Phyllis on DVD: It is time

I thought I was the only one who liked the MTM trilogy in the opposite order of everyone else.

Phyllis, with its almost black humor, was always my favorite, then Rhoda, and finally MTM.

I guess the characters on "Mary" weren't quirky enough for my sometimes odd taste. I still like it, but not as much as the other two.

It would be great to have a complete series set of Phyllis all at once, the same way MPI is releasing The Mothers-in-Law's 2 seasons in a few weeks.

Thanks to Bill B's post above, I was able to determine that I have the ALN network (I didn't even know!) and they still air "Phyllis", even as of July. Today they played episode 1 of Season 2. Anyway, these episodes time out at 23 minutes without commercials. Would these be the syndicated/edited versions or the original lengths as they aired in 1975?

Hi,

They are edited versions, the unedited Phyllis should run to about 25mins 20 seconds or around that,I waslucky to be sent the recent Phyllis ALN episodes,"Up For Grabs" has a lot of dialogue between Phyllis and the telephone engineer cut out.

I agree with the other posts,Phyllis on DVD,please!

John Ritter's brief appearance as Phyllis' new boss in the first episode of season two has to be one of the most hysterical moments of the entire series.  I'd love to see that again, but since I'm too cheap to pay a monthly cable bill for the sake of catching reruns on this cable channel someone mentioned, I'll just have to cross my fingers for the DVDs.

Yes he was really funny, you get the feeling in season2 of Phyllis, they struggled to write for three regular co-workers alongside Phyllis.

The character of Dan didn't really develop, the writers seemed to write more for the unfunny Leonard.

I agree. "Rhoda" was a good show and funny, but not as funny as "Phyllis"! Mother Dexter and Audrey were a hoot!
With only two seasons, the complete series should be released.

RE: Phyllis on DVD: It is time
I just looked at the upcoming schedule for "Phyllis" episodes on ALN for the next 2 weeks and noticed they are skipping the episode "Phyllis In Love" from Season 1. Does anyone know if ALN ever aired this episode at any time since they began airing "Phyllis" in January? They basically air the shows in chronological order and the channel seems to be up to the 4th cycle of airings. Does anyone know if there's a specific reason they're skipping this episode or if it aired during the '90s run on that other cable channel?

Yes ALN did show "Phyllis In Love" earlier this year,I was sent it from a friend in the US,it was also shown on Nick At Nite in the 90s,the UK cable channel "The Family Channel" showed the entire Phyllis run in 93 but oddly missed out the two episodes dealing with Mother Dexter's Living with Arthur episode and The Wedding.

The Phyllis episode that ALN hasn't shown is "Sonny Boy" from season1.

Loved both the Phylis show and the Betty White Show, watched them also on Nick @Nite back in the day. I think they should just get released as complete series sets and just get them out. I wouldn't mind paying a premium price for uncut episodes in a complete series set.

RE: Phyllis on DVD: It is time

I'd sure like to see Shout Factory release "Phyllis: Complete Seasons 1 & 2" too! All at once would be great, but the 2 seasons separate would be acceptable as well.

On an unrelated note, is there a way to get on a Shout Factory e-mailing list to be notified of upcoming sales on the site? I only see a monthly newletter subscription, but that doesn't even give sale info. Like Black Friday sales. 25% off and free shipping sales. It seems there's no way to be notified of this by email. And you just have to remember to check the website every now and then (but you can miss sales days that way.) Shout Factory ought to set up such a thing if they don't have it.
