Why should I purchase a SHOUT title?
I own literally hundreds of television seasons on DVD, but I've never purchased one from SHOUT. Why? Because I hear bad things about the way SHOUT masters their DVDs. Namely, that syndication-cut episodes of shows are used instead of the original broadcast-length episodes. An example: I love the show RHODA, but I've heard that the DVDs that are available are edited versions of the episodes. To me, that is criminal, because it means that the original episodes will almost certainly never been seen again, and it completely ruins the idea of wanting to own the title on DVD. I'm certainly never paying money for RHODA on DVD if the episodes aren't complete. Can anyone address this?

RE: Why should I purchase a SHOUT title?

I was so excited to buy Rhoda on dvd, and planned on buying a copy for myself, and multiple copies to give as gifts. I DECLINED to buy any when I found out they were chopped up versions. I honestly would have paid a whole lot more to get unedited copies.

I'm hoping another company will get the rights to this show in the future and put out unedited versions. It would be nice if Shout redid the 1st season and put out an uncut copy, and I would buy it in a heartrbeat.

I really can understand why you are disappointed.

I would have loved to see  a dvd put out that would have preserved this show for television preservation reasons. This was a classic tv show, that I hoped would have a high-quality release.

RE: Why should I purchase a SHOUT title?

I can't say that I know much about 'Rhoda', but I came across this post in another thread.  It comes from the DVD producer, Brian Ward:

"We're doing a lot of preproduction on the second season of Rhoda.  After the last release, we're trying very hard to not release a second season before we know, without a shadow of doubt, that we have most--if not all--original broadcast masters in as good of condition as possibly exists.
We're listening to the fans.  We know you all want them, but we also know you want them RIGHT.  So, while it may take a little longer than most second releases, we're working hard to make sure that when you get them, you get them that way.  Thanks for the patience."

This is why I love Shout Factory.  They respect their fans.  The three 'educational shorts' on the Sam & Max set were only tracked down and remastered because a fan requested them on this very forum.  Shout also went out and FILMED an actor reunion panel for an upcoming Mystery Science Theater set, again, because fans requested it.  They're not all-powerful, and mistakes may happen, but Shout is ultimately committed to bettering themselves and their products.  I think that demands respect.

Shout does an amazing job with the DVDs it puts out. Also, they don't release one season and then leave fans hanging for the rest of a series that will never be released. Shout treats its fans better than most other companies I've come across. It's impossible to please everyone all the time, but I give Shout lots of credit where credit is do and I hope they keep up the fantastic work they've done with so many shows.

I don't think he meant it literally. He is entitled to his opinion.

While nice they're striving for quality with season 2, it hardly matters now. Because they didn't put this effort to begin with, we'll never get a proper release of this series (Barring them fixing S1 like they should), the only ones buying from here on out are those that still bought S1 and didn't consider the problems a deal breaker. Too little too late, imo.
