The Patty Duke Show
The PILOT was supposed to be released on the The Patty Duke Show: Season One Box Set released today (9-29-09) but it is not anywhere on this disc but it is listed on the Shout Web site in product description. What happened ? Is this a hidden easter egg hidden in the menu?

Often, the company that puts that information on the store's site is taking information from old data found from earlier in the project's life.  As explained in the other threads, the pilot was not cleared for use on the set.  Sorry for the confusion.  I'll have that removed from the description.

Thanks Brian! I just get my hopes up so much. To some of us these old shows are the only things we have to look forward to. Unlike some of the crap they air on TV now. Most are shows from the BBC that are re=made for the USA market which aren't as good as the originals. The shows I really love these days have been cancelled like Pushing Daisies. But I know the market is geared to the 20 something market. Too bad..look at where this has taken the music business...American Idol singers.

I noticed that THIS TV is running the Patty Duke Show and in they're in the third season.  I caught it a little late, but it appears the episodes are uncut.

RE: The Patty Duke Show

Hi Jay!

Just to let you know, the laser disc has 8 shows that were transferred complete from the network masters and everything was left in. Every commercial, sponsor tags, etc. And the main and title themes from all three seasons right off the magnetic 3 stripe tracks. Too bad they didn't do the whole series. The major studios won't release the shows like this. They do it there own way and tell you that's the way YOU want to see them. A bunch of crap of course. It's all about amount of time on the DVD which cost them more money to produce. But they don't realize people would pay more money to have the shows complete with everything left in. That makes the set much more desirable and collectible. And the damn commercials are public domain but they don't want to believe that. Companies like Shout only get what the studios decides to send them or im sure they would have the stuff left in. As Brian mentioned in response to my last post.        Jack

Commercials are not public domain, especially if the advertised product still exists.  Trust me.  Those people want their money, because you forget, they spent money at one time to sponsor the shows.  It's their way of getting it back, at an inflated rate.

Every commercial included on MGM's laser disc, which I have at my desk, was cleared by MGM's legal team.  We were denied the initial use of those commercials by Fox, but are still trying to get them included on future sets.

If commercials of any sort would be included, I myself would prefer to see them as extras, rather than as part of the episodes.  One of the reasons I like watching TV shows on DVD is NOT seeing commercials.

If they're included, they will be included as bonus features and will not be edited into the episodes.

Brian:

Fox owns the commercials?

On future sets, even if you don't have any commercials is there anyway to retain the "The Patty Duke Show was brought to you by..." voiceover that was built into the tags for the first season and the second season.

On the first season set, they fade out before the voiceover (as you know) but could be included with some sort of explanation about how this was they way they repeated the main sponsor on the packaging.

I do not know how much flexibility you have with your supplied transfers (or whether they include the tag voiceovers or not) but I bring it up, in case it is possible.

Fox doesn't own the commercials, but because they own the show (we only licensed it from them), we have to get their approvals of everything that goes on the DVDs.  The commercials are not approved, at this time.

The masters we were given do not have the bumpers you describe.  Sorry.

Oh I thought it was only MGM that owned the show but I see the Fox logo on the back of the box. Man, ownership of these shows goes all over the place, doesn't it.

Do both MGM and Fox own the show?  It says on the back of the box that "The Patty Duke Show is owned by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios Inc." and goes on to say that it was "licensed by 20th Century Fox".  It's confusing...

All of MGM's properties that go onto DVD (or Blu-ray) right now comes from Fox. At TVShowsOnDVD I describe Fox as MGM's "distributor", but it's actually a much closer relationship than that. For home video purposes, you basically have to deal with both studios.  It's not *quite* one entity...but it's so close that a lot of people do view it that way.  Still, it's worth noting that Fox doesn't actually own MGM (actually, Sony owns a big chunk of the studio...but not a majority, so when Sony tried distributing MGM products on DVD and it didn't work out, MGM moved to Fox).

RE: The Patty Duke Show

Brian,

What if you guys set the DVD's up so they could be played with the commercials in the episodes or without. That way everybody is happy. This has been done before on other tv dvd sets and it works out great!  Commercials in shows of the Fifties and Sixties are as enjoyable and creative as the show itself. Outstanding presentations and inventiveness. Not like the crap the last 30 years. That's why it's incrediable to see this stuff in the text instead of separate. It's fits like a glove.  That goes for next week previews and scene to scene bumpers too.

 Thanks,

   Jack

I became a fan of the show when it aired on Nick at Nite years ago.and I've enjoyed revisiting the show. Thanks Shout! A few questions.

Are sales worthy enough to warrant a season 2?

Will MGMs recent financial struggles interfere with said release?

Any chance future sets will include the unaired pilot and/or the reunion movie?

Thanks,

Tad

As I mentioned before, the masters don't have the commercials and, even if they did, they would require the approvals of Fox, who wouldn't.  Folks may enjoy the nostalgic commercials of yesteryear, but just as you won't find the most recent Lost DVDs including commercials that aired during the breaks, you won't find most nostalgic television DVD sets including their original commercials, either.  It's both a content and clearance issue.  These commercials, despite what many may think, are not in the public domain, so clearances would have to be made.  It's just not a possibility.

As for sales, I can assure you that there will be a second season of The Patty Duke Show sometime early next year.  I am working on that volume now, in fact.  Everything's shaping up well and it looks like we'll have another really fun set.

That's great news! I've already "worn out" season one.

As for old commercials, the only one I would really hope for on the season 2 set is the Patty and Cathy commercial for Breck that was included on the laser disc set. Cast sponsor commercials have been included on other vintage TV sets and I hope Fox would permit it for this one (as an extra, not in the body of the show).

Thanks for the great news about seanson two.  I really enjoyed the season one collection. I enjoyed it so much that I went out and purchased the entire three seasons. When I received the collection I was tremenously dissapointed. If asked I will go into details.  Please , Please , Please don't waste your money on these rip off produtcs. I am going to wait for the Shout Facatory to released their SUPERIOR PRODUCT. I would not hesitate to pay three to fives more for seasons two and three from the Shout Factory.Keep up your great work.                   A very satisfied customer.

I have most of the series recorded on tape from Nick At Nite. It was in EP, since tape was more expensive in the 80's. Throughout the years, I've done video trading and traded copies of the show a lot. I wouldn't be surprised if what you got originated from my recordings. If so, they were probably a few generations removed from the original and would look pretty bad.

I think I have all of the episodes on tape from when it aired on NAN. And yes, I too taped it in EP because it was too expensive to record them all in SP. lol

Speaking of Nick at Nite, wouldn't it be a blast if all of their commercials for TPDS could be included in the Season Two or Season Three DVD release?

Great news, looking forward to season 2 (I just finished with the last episode on the first disc).

And yes, those Nick at Nite commercials and promos were hilarious, I remember watching Patty and the Donna Reed Show every night, and the promos only added to my enjoyment. I know they did ads for TPDS, but I can't remember what (I rememeber they used to have this Dr. who would analyze a show they were airing and use that as a commercial. The "How to Be Swell" and the Milkman bits were funny too). Ah memories.

The multi-generation of copying is only one of the many issues that I have with this complete set.  From some of the episodes in this set, I would not doubt that they were from your orginal recordings.

Are the 24 or 22 minutes? I recorded most episodes from the first 2 runs when they were 24 minutes. Then NIN edited them down to 22 minutes. Most of the other bootlegs have 22 minute episodes, if you have 24 minutes, you might have my recordings.
