RE: What 80's Cartoon do you want to see released by SHOUT FACTORY? Your UNRELEASED TOP 10?

Ruby-Spears Superman is coming out later this year.

Here is my top 10 (disregarding any possible rights issues) 80s wants:

1. M.A.S.K.  (last of the big toyline cartoons not to have a release)

2. Saturday Supercade (I think this would sell good considering all the classic arcade characters in it that are still being released in various forms).

3. Dragon's Lair

4. Pac-Man

5. Ewoks (needs full release)

6. Challenge of the GoBots (would do well with the Transformers crowd)

7. Thundarr the Barbarian (would do well with the He-Man/Conan crowd)

8. C.O.P.S. (still want a full release, I'll settle for DVD on Demand or Shout exclusive or whatever).

9. Kissyfur (DIC show that would appeal to younger kids as well as nostalgia people)

10. tie. Inhumanoids and Visionaries (these would probably be the easiest for Shout to get out, plus they could be made cheap and quick since they are short series).

I have the UK release of Pole Position, but that would be cool as a US release as well.  Dino-Riders would also be a nice release (I would hope it would have the 14th episode missing from the UK release).  I'd like The Pirates of Dark Water and DIC G.I. Joe too, but those are early 90s shows.

Be on the look out for Inhumanoids, Visionaries and M.A.S.K.I just bought these within the last week. It's been a trend that the stuff I buy that I figure will never get a US release does. You can thank me in a 2010.

RE: What 80's Cartoon do you want to see released by SHOUT FACTORY?........YOUR TOP 10?

In my opinion, Marvel/Sunbow made the best animated shows. (JEM, Inhumanoids, Visionaries, Pryde of the X-men, G.I. Joe, Transformers etc.) These show set the bar for great American cartoons. The character designs (style, anatomy, detail), animation and voice acting, were top notch. They're part of the reason why I went to art school and became a professional artist. Alot of today's shows, artistically speaking, are garbage. The writing is alot better today-but in the 80's, there were alot more restrictions placed on writers.

A couple of years ago I attended Comic-Con and was fortunate enough to get a chance to speak with Ken Spears, of RUBY-SPEARS, who did the 50th Anniv. Superman. I asked him what his thoughts were on animated shows today- particularly, super-hero shows. He told me that his work on Superman in 1988, had yet to be surpassed. (a view I also share) He went on to say that, most designers today, although formally trained, make their characters overly stylized, with little to no regards to human anatomy or proportions. Using their designs as a way of getting noticed in the biz. He commented that, in his day, artist developed designs that would best represent the character, rather than use their designs as a signature for their own work.

ERRRR

What about shows such as

- Ducktales

- Adventures of the Galaxy Rangers

- Bionic Six

- Saber Rider

They usually had better animation, theme songs and writing compared to the ones you mentioned

Adventures of the Galaxy Rangers and Saber Rider have had complete releases.  Disney abandoned DuckTales with one release left (that really pissed me off).

Yep, Blackstar was another stellar set from the now defunct BCI Eclipse.  First one of theirs I bought, actually.  Should still be out there somewhere.  If not amazon, ebay for sure.  Adventures of the Galaxy Rangers was released complete in two volumes by Koch, Saber Rider was JUST released in full by Anime Works.

As for my top 10...hmm...  In no particular order:

01.  Jayce and the Wheeled Warriors - the rest of it.

02.  C.O.P.S. - the rest of it

03.  Visionaries: Knights of the Magical Light (short series, could be done in one set)

04.  Inhumanoids: The Evil That Lies Within (ditto)

05.  Starcom: The U.S. Space Force (ditto)

06.  Pole Position (ditto)

07.  Extreme Ghostbusters

08.  Muppet Babies (though I know the gajillions of movie clips in it make it a licensing nightmare)

09.  Jem

10.  All the old 80's video game tons that haven't been released yet (Saturday Supercade, Pac-Man, Dragon's Lair, etc. though I know most of those are owned by Warner since they were Hanna-Barbera/Ruby-Spears, so not likely to happen from Shout...)

11.  Throw Robotix and Bigfoot in there too to round out the Sunbow collection.  Both could be single disc releases...

I've said it before, I'll say it again - DVD on Demand via createspace would be a GREAT way to get more product out there for next to no overhead.  Especially stuff that Shout already has the license to.  Why let the licenses stagnate and expire if there's a way you can make at least SOME money off the properties?  Seems like a no-brainer to me.

Even though I know it isn't likely, it would be nice if Disney would sell off their late 80s/early 90s Disney Afternoon cartoons to somebody that would do a complete release.  Many shows like DuckTales, Rescue Rangers, Gummi Bears, and Darkwing Duck are waiting to be completed.  I wish Lucas would release Droids and Ewoks complete sets.

I may have caught an episode or two when it was originally on back in the day, but otherwise no, I didn't watch Bionic Six.  Though I DID find one of the original toy commercials on an old tape when I was transferring stuff over to digital format recently!  So if they DO do a release, I'd be happy to contribute that as an extra.

I know there's a ton of fans of the show, and I'm sure it would do well if released.  It's just not on my list because I PERSONALLY don't have much experience/memory of it, so I went with other stuff.

Hi Folks,

Just a bit off topic. Does anyone know what the new Transformers or G.I. Joe shows will be called on the Hasbro/Discovery Kids channel? And is there a list shows they intend to revamp, besides the two mentioned? Thanks guys!

BTW   New Adventures of MIGHTY MOUSE  ( 1987 Ralph Bakshi) will be released on a 3 disc  DVD set on 5th January. That should be review material for you

I would like them to release the following cartoons.
1. Its Punky Brewster (they released 41 out of 42 episodes as bonus features in their Punky Brewster Season sets - The
cartoon  set would have all 42 episodes in one collection - a few bonus features would be nice)
2. Pole Position - short lived and underrated cartoon - an interview with Kaleena Kiff as a bonus would be awesome!!
3. Pac-man -  (43 episodes a classic cartoon based on one of the most recognizable arcade characters of all time
4. Inspector Gadget (all 86 episodes need released - the first set had 22 so please finish the series)
5. Care Bears - complete series set
6. Turbo Teen - Complete Series
7. Neverending Story - Complete Series
8. Lady Lovelocks - all 20 episodes
9. Pippi Longstocking (1988) 26 episodes
10. Ewoks and Droids (one set for both shows)

That Pole Position set is a BOOTLEG.  A very convincing fake, yes, but still an unofficial release.  So yes, we want Shout to release it officially.  The only official release that's been put out is a Region 2 U.K. release.

Oh, and YES!  I saw the news about the Mighty Mouse set.  Definitely plan to pick that up!

I have the complete UK Pole Position release and the quality is surprisingly good. However I dont understand why they put 13 episodes on 4 disks instead of 2.

As for Teen Wolf the Animated Series it has been released in Australia. http://www.ezydvd.com.au/item.zml/798517

Again I have this release as well and the quality is surprisingly good as well. There are interlacing issues at times but its great just to have the complete series. This is a show that will more than likely never get released in the states much like Bucky O'Hare and the Toad Wars.

Captain Power was never officially released on DVD . It's live action show but I hope someone could finally pick it up. A show way ahead of its time and it's only 22 episodes

Didn't Straczynski of Babylon 5 fame, work on it? I think he also worked on Jayce and the Wheeled Warriors as well.

RE: What 80's Cartoon do you want to see released by SHOUT FACTORY? Your UNRELEASED TOP 10?

I know you guys said 80s cartoons.  There'll be some 90s cartoons here too.  I just have to put these out there, because they are shows I'd love to see.  I can't get the number to ten, because alot of the great ones have already been mentioned.  But these are ones that haven't been mentioned that I'd love to see.

In no specific order:

1 - The Dreamstone - No, not the one from Chrono Trigger.  There was a cartoon called The Dreamstone.  I don't know if this'll even be possible to put out because it was originally a British-made series, and I've only seen the first season in the US.  But it was amazing for its time, especially considering it was marketed as a show for young children.  And it also had a bit of a continuity with the story, from what I recall.

2 - David the Gnome - Also called World of David the Gnome.  This one was mentioned already, but it needs to be mentioned again.  This is another show that was marketed for young children.  But this show was one of the better ones of its time, and it dealt with subjects that were kind of taboo in shows of its genre (such as injury and death), and managed to convey them tastefully enough to where it became one of the show's merits.  Really great show that no avid collector should be without.

3 - Bucky O'Hare - Here's one from the 90s.  But it was awesome.  The first show featuring animals that was all action and no fluff.  It was way ahead of its time (on many different levels), and it was also one of the inspirations for the Ratchet & Clank series.  Its only downfall was the fact that it had no marketing at the time, and it was aired at totally random times over multiple channels, so it was near impossible to see on a regular basis.  This is another one that's high on my list, because it has never had a proper DVD release (at least as far as I know).

4 - Samurai Pizza Cats - Another one from the 90s.  This show needs no introduction.  It's a hilariously dubbed show that is a parody of just about every cartoon or anime ever made up to that point.  Really great stuff, and something that everyone should see.  You'll never find another cartoon like this ever again.  This is the show I want to see a boxset of the most.  It has never had a proper release on DVD (and I believe only a few select episodes are even available on VHS).

5 - Count Duckula - I don't know if this has a release yet or not.  But it would be awesome to own a boxset of this series.  That was the first cartoon I'd ever seen that featured monsters as the protagonists.

6 - Spiral Zone - Again, don't know if this was ever released on DVD.  But it was awesome.  It was very dark for its time, and it had a bit of a continuity to the episodes too.  Very cool show, and another that I would definitely recommend.

That's it for now.  There are others, believe me.  But I'd have to go back and see which ones haven't been done yet.

The first Season (26 episodes) of Count Duckula was released a while back (I've shown it a couple of times in my DVD Collection overview videos).  No sign of the remaining 3 seasons, alas.  The entire series was released in Region 2.  I'd love to see this completed as well.

I would LOVE to see Captain Power get a proper, officially DVD release.  Great show.  I have about 70 minutes' worth of material I could contribute as extras too...

RE: What 80's Cartoon do you want to see released by SHOUT FACTORY? Your UNRELEASED TOP 10?

Hi,

I read an article the other day saying that Hasbro may be planning on relaunching three new shows based on their existing products:  Transformers, G.I. Joe and My Little Pony on the new Hasbro Network due out in 2010. Star Wars: The Clone Wars, was also mentioned in the ENI article. Apparently, on Nov. 5, an announcement will be made to investors, in more detail.

With regards to JEM, I am a huge fan and was told by a Shout Factory rep (not Brian) at last years Botcon, that Shout Factory did inquire on attaining permission to release the show on DVD, but Hasbro decline. The Shout Factory rep went on to mention that this maybe due to the fact that they may have plans for the franchise in the near future. I'm hopeful that Hasbro has plans to update the show in some form or another, so that it can garner some popularity to justify a release of the original series. Hasbro may have been reluctant to authorize a DVD release due to a lack of popularity for the show in current pop culture. Those of you who are old enough, may recall that back in the 80's, the next feature planned after Transformers and GI Joe, was JEM. But according to Christy Marx, the head writer of JEM, plans were cancelled due to the lack of popularity at the  box office for Transformers: The Movie.

Hi Folks,

Just a bit off topic. Does anyone know what the new Transformers or G.I. Joe shows will be called on the Hasbro/Discovery Kids channel? And is there a list shows they intend to revamp, besides the two mentioned? Thanks guys!

BTW Zaranyzerak, love your video reviews!!

RE: What 80's Cartoon do you want to see released by SHOUT FACTORY? Your UNRELEASED TOP 10?

Hi Folks,

Just a quick update. Per the webcast from Hasbro to their investors, the Hasbro/Discovery Kids Network is currently working on 12 new shows based on some of their existing product lines. Margaret Loesh, who worked on 80'st favorites like G.I. Joe, Transformers, X-Men, Smurfs etc., is the CEO in charge of the new network. Two shows mentions by name were Micronauts and Beyblade. Since I believe I only heard a portion of the webcast, I cannot confirm other brands included in the 12 new shows currently in prodcution, other than the two mentioned. Although, I'm almost certain that G.I. Joe and the Transformers brands are part of the lineup. Also, the new network is confirmed to showcase some of Hasbro's more popular shows from the past. I'll will continue to update the forum, as more information becomes available. Thanks
