Mr. Belvedere Season 4...

Thanks so much, Shout Factory, for bringing this show to dvd.  A lot of shows only see a few seasons released on dvd.  Please keep Mr. Belvedere going.  I watched this as a little kid in the 80's and haven't seen it since, until this year.  I can't wait for season 4, hopefully much sooner than later.

Thanks again.

For season 4, I wonder if they should include "The Book" and "Black Widow" (both of which aired in the 5th season, but were originally intended for the 4th) as bonus episodes?

That would be awsome.  I would love to see a blooper reel too.  After some of the stories the cast has told about Brice correcting people's lines, there has to be some hilarious stuff out there.  Seasons 3 and 4 of 21 Jump Street were only 2 months apart, with season 5 about 4 months after that.  It would be great to see a few more sets out before summer next year!

Hopefully season 4 will make it's debut on DVD in March 2010.  That would make it 1 yr since the first set was released.  More great commentary would also be excellent.  12thman it is sad once you finish the set isn't it?  I've already started re-watching some episodes and plan to watch more again once I have more time.

Please bring "Starman" the 1986-87 tv series to DVD. Please bring Gimme A Break seasons 2 & beyond to DVD. Please bring Silver Spoons seasons 2 & beyond to DVD.

RE: Mr. Belvedere Season 4...
Chris, a few things that I should point for you regarding seasons 4-6 of "Mr. Belvedere":

1) In season 4, they somewhat changed the opening credits (unlike in season 3 when they were completely changed). This time, they showed Tracy Wells with a longer hairstyle, a pink outfit, and new positions for her on the couch. It was this version that was edited down to 30 seconds, and shown on ALL episodes in syndication, except for the ones from season 6. They also changed the opening credits somewhat for season 6 (that version had clips from season 5 episodes, and also new photos of Brice Beckham on the couch).

2) The ending theme changed for the last time in season 4. This time, it was more of a big band type of version:
http://www.sitcomsonline.com/sounds/mrbelvedere-shortending.mp3 (the one I'm talking about)

3) Season 4 had two leftover episodes (the ones I mentioned), season 5 had two unaired episodes ("The Dinner" and "The Attic"), and season 6 had eight unaired episodes ("Love Fest", "Donuts", "Runways", "The Pageant", "The Baby", "Bad Marsha", "Home", and "Mumsy").

And last but not least:

4) The cast and crew really loved having Robert Goulet on the show. So much in fact, that they brought him back three more times: One was in a season 4 episode called "The Trip: Part 2", the other was in the season 6 opener "The Field" (George's birthday episode), and the final first-run episode of the series, "Mr. Belvedere's Wedding: Part 2". I don't know if Mr. Goulet sang in "The Trip: Part 2" and in "The Field", but I do know for a fact that he sang in the finale. In the finale, he sang "If Ever I Would Leave You" (48 seconds of it to be exact).

Sorry if that was too much info for you Chris. I was just trying to give you some info about seasons 4-6 of "Mr. Belvedere".

It is said when you finally finish the series.  I try not to watch them all right away but I can't help it.  I hope it doesn't even take until March for season 4 to come out.  It's hard to wait.  Mr. Belvedere hasn't been syndicated where I live in so long, it's probably been 15 years since I've seen the show.

Thanks for the info.  To be honest, I don't think I've ever even seen most of the later seasons episodes.  I do, however, recall seeing Tracy Wells with the longer hairstyle and pink outfit.

I'm really looking forward to the upcoming sets (they just HAVE to be released) because for many episodes this will be my first time viewing them.  Although I know what transpired in the series finale, I don't think I've ever seen it.

12thman, I was probably being too generous in saying 15 years.  I think you are more right in saying 1990.  I have more memory watching the show on Friday nights as a kid than in syndication.  The final season doesn't even sound very familiar to me.  It's fun to watch these and see episodes I don't remember, and then see the one's that come right back to me eventhough I haven't seen them since maybe their original airing.

Isn't this sad, I'm feeling like it's a "fix" also.  I guess if you grew up on 80's tv, there is no substitute.  I can't believe all the adult humor in this show.  I never picked up on it being 6 or 7 years old.  That's part of what makes Mr. Belvedere hold up today, it wasn't all Brady Bunch happiness.  A lot of edge for a show in 1985.  We should make this almost as our online petition to Shout Factory and just keep posting our thoughts and letting them know how much we want the series to continue.  Everyday I find I have something new to say about it.  I know I mentioned bloopers in an earlier post, but I'd also love to see old interviews from the set or something like that.  What's everyone else up for as far as special features?

What are you talking about? There was only one finale of "Mr. Belvedere" that existed. It was the 2-parter where Belvedere got married to a woman named Louise, and moved to Africa with her.

yes the wedding/africa episode was the re-shoot. The original took a much more dramatic tact, with Lynne Belvedere accidently taking a tab of Wesley's acid and then hitting 3 people with the family car. There was a whole court trial, where Mr. Belvedere acted as his own lawyer and called the Queen of England to the stand. He is convicted of manslaughter but whisked away at the last moment by Robert Goulet. The last scene is them walking into the African bush. HOW DO YOU NOT KNOW ABOUT THIS? It is an infamous part of television history.

RE: Mr. Belvedere Season 4...
There was no case of "manslaughter" in the finale. I haven't seen both parts of it, but I did read a summary for both parts, and they never said anything about manslaughter. Belvedere got cold feet from the wedding, and George found him on the park bench. It was there that Wesley and the rest of the guys, including Skip and Robert Goulet dragged Mr. Belvedere on a night on the town on the eve of his wedding.

And part 2 ended with a postcard from Mr. Belvedere saying the following:

"To all my dear Owens
Married life has been rather hectic  here in the
Burungga  Mountains. First Louise and I enjoyed our Abba Dabha
honeymoon. Now we  fill  our days counting gorilla  noses.
I miss you  dearly.
But being around  apes keeps the spirit of the Owens Family alive
indeed. Oops!  I must close. Louise is calling.
Love to all,   Lynn
P.S.
When  you  notice  I've left my journal  behind,
don't bother to send it.
Perhaps some day,
I'll drop by and pick it up myself."

Part 2 of the finale is also one of two episodes that I know did not end with Mr. Belvedere writing in his journal. The other was "The Counselor" episode from season 4, where Wesley gets molested. That episode ended with Christopher Hewett and Brice Beckham in the Owens living room concerning with audiences about the topic on child molestation.

Even if there were little to no details yet, I would be happy now just knowing that the 4th season will be coming eventually.  With shows on dvd, I always have that fear that something will happen and they don't continue a series for some reason.

And just a side note, this thread seems to have the second most replies in the Tv From The 80's section, just behind Small Wonder.  Hopefully it will mean something for the rest of the series.

Exactly, when I first saw the show when I was a kid I didn't catch all the adult humor.  Now seeing it as an adult, there's a whole nother level to the show I never knew was there.  I think that a lot of people who haven't seen it in awhile don't realize it, and that leads to some labeling the show as "corny" or outdated.  Neither of which this show is!  It has to be seen as an adult to truly appreciate it.  Sure, there's the occasional "very special epside" but that's not the sum of the show.  I think this is a somewhat misunderstood show.  Thankfully the DVDs allow us to see the show the way it should be seen as adults.

There is no way i am buying Season 4 without that alternative ending i mentioned. It is so iconic. I know there may be music rights issues with all the GG Allin music they used, but we can get around it. PLEASE try and find this episode. I think it was called Man(servent)slaughter

I do believe you owe Yogurt an apology, Mr. Tummybot5000. Grammatical faults and sentence structure pitfalls aside, s/he does make a valid point regarding the evolution of television and the means in which it has influenced our culture. This is not to mention how our culture has influenced television! Oh my, what a quagmire that becomes!

In any event, Roseanne did much to change the landscape of the situation comedy. One can only hope that in this post-Barr cynical world in which we all live, the subtlety and charm of Mr. Lynn Aloysius Belvedere can still find its way into the hearts and souls of the masses. Praise be unto thee, Christopher Hewett.

RE: Mr. Belvedere Season 4...

Thanks 12thman.  It's awsome knowing there are a lot of us out there.  With all these old shows coming to dvd I haven't seen in 20 years, there's been a lot that don't hold up and I wish I never had bought.  But Mr. Belvedere is not one.  AND, I've turned some of my friends back on to it.  Since it has had limited syndication, it's really a forgotten show but it still strikes a chord and brings back memories to us 80's kids.  It is in demand and I hope the sales numbers reflect that.  Here's hoping to season 4 with in a few months(no to beg, I just know I can't wait another year or 2 to continue or complete the series).

RE: Mr. Belvedere Season 4...
I never got into the dysfunctional family comedy (ie Rosanne, Everybody Loves Raymond, etc.) that came after Mr Belvedere.  I have a soft spot for 80's sitcoms and there weren't too many dysfunctional families in them (that I recall anyway).  I mean the familes had thier issues but they tended to be nothing major and the family dynamics did not appear to be dysfunctional as a whole.  I'm thinking along the lines of the Owens, Keatons, Seavers, Huxtables, etc.  Married With Children and other dysfunctional family comedies of the 90's marked a change in how families were portrayed on TV in my opinion.  So I do think the TV families of the 80's were gone after shows like Mr Belvedere went off the air.

As a person with two kids I agree please get more shows out I also want to answer the question about the shows and values I think the 80's had  a black and white quality to them where the whole family could still watch them. Where as the 90's had a large grey area where it got to be too adult.

RE: Mr. Belvedere Season 4...
I totally agree.  I was a little kid in the 80's and early 90's and then obviously a teenager in the middle/late 90's.  Mr. Belvedere had enough elements for me to enjoy at 7 yrs old as it did my mom in the late 80's, then 90's shows just worked into my growing age with them becoming less fmaily friendly.  Even as the 80's went on, shows like 21 Jump Street were a little over the top for me but I managed to watch them whenever I could.  I'm as nostalgic as anyone and watching Mr. Belvedere again reminds me why i liked it in the first place, but also shows why my mom liked it at the same time.  I enjoy Rosanne and Married With Children also, but Belvedere is so subtle it just makes it awsome.  Jokes like Mr. Belvedere wanting to stay tied up and Wesley saying "why, you like this kinda stuff" I think makes me laugh even more now than anything could have 20 years ago.

I don't mean to intrude on one's personal life, Mr. 5000, however I have seen first-hand how PCP can tear a family apart. Literally, a teenage boy attempted to dismember his parents at the breakfast table. Horrible. Absolutely horrible.

I'd hate to see this tragic fate befall another of the Lord's precious children. Remember, there's no shame in admitting the need for help. Don't let one mistaken besmirch your chance at everlasting happiness.

There but for the grace of G-d,

He was one of the best, and still stands up against child actors today.  Brice had this odd combination of brilliance/sincerity/quirkiness/and child ignorance that should have earned him an Emmy at some point in the shows run.  You don't see many adult actors pulling off characters as well as Wesley.  Neil Patrick Harris I think has grown into that type of character on HIMYM.  Just off the chart performance.

I never meant to offend anyone. I am just a bear. A lonely, robotic bear. Aside from honey made from robotic bees my only wish in life is to see the REAL finale of Mr.Belvedere Season 7, MAN(SERVENT)SLAUGHTER. No one here can tell me they dont want to see Goulet and Lynnnnne Belevedere dissapear into the african unknown! I wonder everynight what happened to them! Did they live? Were they eatin by jungle bears? Is there such a thing as jungle bears? Did Goulet kill Belevedere and wear his skin like a jacket? THESE ARE THE ANSWERS THAT THE SHOUT FACTORY IS DENYING US. RISE UP!

This site's server keeps constantly crashing. I wonder if it is because of the company getting too many requests for season 4's "Mr. Belvedere"?

It sucks when the sites crashes, but that would be awsome if it had something to do with a Belvedere demand! :)  I always found it interesting that shows that are mediocre with the ratings in their orignal airings turn out to be so popular afterwards.  Especially shows like this and Freaks and Geeks that had little syndication.  But it's great!

RE: Mr. Belvedere Season 4...
Another thing I forgot to mention about season 4 (1987-1988).

It was also when mcfly-31, who is probably the biggest "Mr. Belvedere" fan on the Internet started regularly taping the series. He also said that he was one of the few people who taped practically all the episodes of the series, even though most of the episodes from before season 4 in his collection are syndicated airings, while the majority of them from seasons 4-6 are full-length network versions.

And speaking of mcfly-31, I got the information about the different opening sequences from him, and the information about the finale from Gerry A.'s geoticites fan site.

RE: Mr. Belvedere Season 4...

I wish I had atleast some of them taped, but it a way it's nice not too so i can rediscover them on dvd.  Some shows I grew up with, like Full House and Fresh Prince, I totally love but they have been syndicated for so long and so much that buying the box sets is low on my priority list.  Of course, syndication is still no substitute for the full length episodes and special features.  Even if Mr. Belvedere appeared in syndication tomorrow, I'd still get any future sets.

I believe someone had some episodes on youtube about a year ago, but they were taken down.  They might have been from seasons 4 and 5.  All you can find now is the different intros, some original network promos, and a pretty cool cast interview form like 1989.

RE: Mr. Belvedere Season 4...
A YouTube user used to have 4 episodes up on YouTube last year:

"The Play" (from season 2)
"Grandma" (from season 3)
"The Counselor" (from season 4)
"Homecoming" (from season 6)

The first two were from syndicated airings, while the other two were from original network airings. There was even someone who used to have the opening to an April 1989 episode, also from an original airing, with a sponsorship from Oreo cookies (which was inserted by network affiliates). I also remember the pilot (syndicated version) and Halloween (network version) episodes being up on dailymotion.

The earliest network promo that I found for the show on YouTube was from ABC's Fall 1985 Preview promos, and I even saw several original network promos for season 3 episodes, as well.

I recently found one from when the show was moved to Saturday night, it's the one where George and Belvedere are truckers.  There's one for "Hooky," and one that's really short that I can't I dentify the episode.

On a side note, were't the cast on a few game shows in the 80's.  I thought I remembed them being on Hollywood Squares together.

OMG it's so awesome to see so many supportive fans of the show! It gives me great confidence that Season 4 up to yeah! Season 6 will eventually be out. I just got my Season 3 DVD set and the first thing I did was listen to the audio commentaries. I'll be savoring each episode and not hurry in watching each of them. It's hysterical when the cast laughs at all the jokes that obviously, or not so obviously, were sexual innuendos of some sort. You just know what those moments were when Brice, in the commentary, would say "OH YEAH." I'm really loving the Season 3 DVD set, and I can't wait for Season 4! SHOUT, you guys are AWESOME!!

I've slowly been transferring material from that site to a new blog-based site here: http://blogvedere.blogspot.com I do have a copy of the old site in my hard drive and I'll eventually move all of it in the blog.

RE: Mr. Belvedere Season 4...

There were 6 seasons of Belvedere? Holy Moly. I did not realize. Was the episode MAN(SERVENT)SLAUGHTER actually intended as a mini-series then? I know they had contracted Goulet for 7 episodes (i own the original studio contract. You can see it if you want, but it is now badly stained with bbq sauce). Now i am more rabid than ever to see this lost episode. 140 minutes of one Belvedere story? Count me in.

Sidenote, has anyone else heard the rumor that they are going to do a Belvedere prequel movie starring Ryan Gosling as a young Lynn Belvedere? I cant believe this is true, but apparently they are moving forward with it.

This is a good idea.  Some shows, i.e. Scrubs, go nuts with every special feature possible.  I would love for Mr. Belvedere to do the same.  Old interviews, bloopers, more commentaries, something on Christopher Hewitt would all be welcomed.  Minus a few off topic responses, we still seem to have the highest on the message boards here.  Hopefully sales numbers are agreeing with us and there will be some news in the next few months on the possibility of season 4.

You know what would be a great special feature? The lost episode MAN(SERVENT)SLAUGHTER: THE TRIAL OF LYNNE BELVEDER. Christopher Hewitt often said it was the finest work he ever did. He was said to be so very sad that the network never aired it. COME ON shout factory! Look at all the people on this board DEMANDING this episode! Let us see the "incident", the trial and the Goulet-led  escape to the African bush.

Once again, sales "numbers" on Amazon are so incredibly misleading.  A DVD could sell three copies in one day and be the top seller, if every other DVD sold only one that day.  Likewise, a DVD could sell an astounding 3,000 copies in one day and still be ranked #1,356, if 1,355 other titles sold more than 3,000 copies that day.  The sales ranks really don't mean much, in terms of physical sales.

No, the show was taped in advance. The audience was live, though (in other words, no canned applause/laughter).

I'd imagine that the production schedule went something like this: On the weekends, the old sets were torn down to make way for new ones, and from Monday-Thursday, there would be script changes, run-throughs, and tapings for pre-taped scenes (probably including the journal scenes that each episode typically ended), on Friday, they would do two tapings (a full dress-rehearsal, followed by the taping for the actual episode, where last minute changes would be made).

U.S. Syndication alert:

Pavan just announced on Sitcoms Online that if you have American Life TV, you can catch both of the shows' Christmas episodes ("Christmas Story" from season 4, and "A Happy Guy's Christmas" from season 6). They will air on December 17 at 5-6 P.M. EST

This will be the first time in a little over a decade that the show has been seen in U.S. Syndication.

American Life has not shown Mr. Belvedere before, the episodes in December will be the first time the show will air on the channel. Whether they will decided to continue airing it in the future remains to be seen.
