Member since: 6/22/2008 | | What would you like to see on Volume XVII: stay with all CC eps or include Sci-Fi eps? | | I was just curious, as I finally was able to afford my copy of Volume XV, and we know what will be on Volume XVI when it hits stores in December, some people have been voicing concern about a lack of Sci-Fi eps on the last few volumes. So what I wanted to know is, how important is it for MSTies out there to have Sci-Fi eps start being released again? While I do love the CC era of the show, I am starting to miss seeing seasons 8-10 coming out. That era of the show still has some great eps that have not been commercially released yet, the reasonings of which have been discussed at length (Puma Man and Final Sacrifice automatically spring to mind). For myself, I missed a chunk of Seasons 9 and 10 when they were first broadcast, so I'd be thrilled to have SF help fill in those gaps. Is anyone else concerned about this? |

It's truly when I was able to watch the show for the first time (due to the fact that I didn't have Comedy Central on my cable back then, but did have Sci-Fi, and the fact that I was only 12 when the show went to Sci-Fi).
The first two boxsets released by SF were an even split of CC and Sci-Fi, so I don't think that SF has something against releasing them. The biggest factor is most likely that there were way more episodes released during the CC years.
My thinking is that the next set will include a Sci-Fi episode. My hope is that it's 0817 - Horror at Party Beach.
You are right that there are a number of Season 8-10 episodes ripe for the picking:
0818 - Devil Doll
0819 - Invasion of the Neptune Men
0913 - Quest of the Delta Knights
1007 - Track of the Moonbeast
These ones spring to mind as the more readily available for release.
So, I guess my feeling is that I would love to see a Sci-Fi episode on the next set. I really hope we see one for sure. |

I really prefer the CC episodes better anyway as the Pearl,Bobo and Brain Guy didnt work for me as much as Frank and Dr F...but I still watch them and do not dislike them to the point where I would not watch. that being said I found 1 or 2 unwatchable experiements from the SciFi era, but I can say the same for CC ..I prefer CC better as they had Joel ! :)
To be honest it really doesnt matter as long as episodes do come out ...I think easy pickings are 817,818,819,913,1005, 1007 which isnt much
The real question is what happens when the easy to license titles are released and we are left with titles like Squirm, Wade Wiliams titles like the Crawling Eye, 90% of Season 3 ( Gamera and the AIP Bert I Gordon, Roger Corman wonders)and episodes 801-809

There were a few exceptions ('Hamlet', shudder), but for the most part writing was really crisp, and I'd love to see more of these episodes released. Truth be told, I'm not that crazy about the Season One episodes that Shout seems to adore, but as one observer pointed out, any MST released is a good thing. Shout seems to genuinely care about this series, and so long as sales are steady, I'm betting they'll release every episode they can. We just gots ta be patient. Bugger. |

Member since: 6/22/2008 | | RE: What would you like to see on Volume XVII: stay with all CC eps or include Sci-Fi eps? | When I posed this question, I didn't take into account that the Sci-Fi era was indeed much shorter than the CC era, and that at least two eps would be released from the CC era because of the two Joel/two Mike ratio that they try to stay with. Along with other titles mentioned, I think that SF could also acquire 813 Jack Frost...maybe they're holding out for some themed Russo-Finnish box set (wouldn't that be nice?) In the end, it comes down to hoping that sales become (or remain) strong, and that SF can continue to chip away at eps that are considered on the fence, maybe see one thought next to impossible to attain make it.
All in all, don't be shocked if Volume XVII stays with an all CC episode release. |

Member since: 1/24/2008 | | RE: What would you like to see on Volume XVII: stay with all CC eps or include Sci-Fi eps? | I dont think it is Shout adoring Season 1 so much - it is just them getting PD episodes , easy pickings to make it easier to get Joel episodes on DVD as unless something changes there arent a lot of Joel episodes to get the rights to or at least on the upper tier Rhino Poll...
I think that if Shout had to spend a little $$$ for 501 , then they needed something low to nothing in price to get the rights to..105 was such an episode. Eps 102,103, & 105 were all public domain and very easy to obtain...
On the Joel end of things the Lippert Season 2 are going to be hard to get, nearly 20 Season 3 episodes are going to be even harder to get, Season 4 to me is the most interesting season to see what can be had...lots of potential here..Season 5 after Hercules the other Joel ones must be hard to get..(504, 508, 510 )
If those Russian films were easy to get I am sure we'd have those by now too (Day the Earth Froze, Jack Frost, Sinbad, etc)
Potential Future Joels to me are Slime People, Castle of Fu Manchu, Rocket Attack USA, Hercules and the Captive Women, Rocky Jones Crash of the Moons,Human Duplicators, Hercules, City Limits...

But you're right dsman, itseems that both hosts have rights issues in regards to entire chunks of their time on the show. Along with S4 eps yet to be released, I also think S6 still has some attainable eps left (High School Big Shot, Violent Years, Danger!! Death Ray, Colossus and the Headhunters, Amazing Transparent Man, Beast of Yucca Flats are, I think, all in the field of play). But, as any die-hard SF-loving MSTie will tell you, we shall wait and see.... |

Member since: 5/7/2008 | | RE: I would like to see more CC eps | As much as I enjoyed the show right up until the end, there's no comparison between the Sci-Fi episodes and the Comedy Channel/Comedy Central shows. It wouldn't bother me at all if they stuck with Comedy Central only for a while, in fact I'd really like that quite a lot! I suspect that in general the only people who like Sci-Fi episodes better are the ones who saw it there first and couldn't get used to earlier look and feel when they finally discovered it, but believe me, if you started with the show in its "glory days", fresh and bright with creator Joel Hodgson, you'd rather see those episodes on DVD first.
For later MSTies who missed early MST3K products from Best Brains (the people who made the show), there's an unopened brand new copy of the long out of print official soundtrack CD up for auction right now on eBay at this link.

Member since: 6/22/2008 | | RE: I would like to see more CC eps | Well, after the announcement on Turkey Day with regards to Volume XVII, I think it's safe to say that SF isn't so shy about dipping into the Sci-Fi era after all!
While I will always be a CC-era fan of the show first, I was starting to miss the later episodes being released, because the show was still funnier than anything on TV, just not quite as charming as it was during the Joel era. Still, this set will certainly appease the Sci-Fi era fans of the show. It's about time that these eps made it to commercial dvd release. |
