I am in full agreement to begin seeing high quality season sets of this show released.  I have also seen numerous blogs in a variety of forums from many other people who join in this.  I believe Nickelodeon owns the distribution rights and just like Paramount and Warner, they are notorious for being unwilling to license out their property.  I know it makes many people wonder why a company refuses to release a show that is number 14 on TV Shows on DVD unreleased DVD rank, and is also unwilling to license out the rights to a company that will.

I wouldn't mind seeing that show come out on DVD along with Turkey Television that was on Nick around the same time period. My, My!!! how that channel has changed in recent years and not for the better IMO...

Les Lye passed away not long ago, and when news hit me, I started to think how cool it would be to have the YCDTOT DVD set. Those were some awesome years, and Les's characters remain a personal favorite. Gotta love every Barth Burger skit where Barth ends it by saying, "D'IIIIIIIIIIII heard that!".

Though yeah, there are a mess load of Nick shows that I'd love to see on DVD. I heard Mysterious Cities of Gold finally got a collectors box set. About time. I know they also sell the Adventures of the Little Prince. Though, I'd kill for a Mr. Wizard's World DVD set, and yes, Turkey TV!!

We haven't heard anything from the Shout! team about acquiring this show and releasing it onto DVD in awesome season sets!  How about it?  This series on DVD will sell extremely well!!

Oh, we know.  But the series is owned by Paramount, so there's really no chance of us getting it.  Believe me, we've tried.

If Dave Lambert's around, maybe he can shed some light on this: I seem to remember seeing that show was at one time being produced for DVD, but then was halted.  Don't know why or even if it's true.  Just remember reading about it.

RE: you can't do that on television

I'll try to shed what light I can, and hopefully it will be more than a nightlight.  :)

If you want the short answer, then you can stop reading after the following 2 words: "complicated clearances".

Folks who got invested in the concept of the "Nick Rewind Collection" and want a slightly longer answer, read on:

Zaranyzerak's got the right links: a Dec. 2005 story with rumors that it would come to DVD in Spring 2006.  It was all part of the "Rewind Collection" from Nick, an idea that was popular with passionate fans of the classic Nick shows.  And TVShowsOnDVD got a TON (and I do mean a TON) of traffic hits from folks reading and re-reading our stories about the various titles in that Rewind Collection.

Somehow, though, all the internet word of mouth didn't translate into actual sales for Rewind Collection titles.  Or at least that's what's been hinted at over the years; the studio has never straight-out said (Paramount's as-candid-as-Brian-Ward type person we used to talk to there moved on from the studio JUST before all of this stuff happened <grin>). But from what we know, sales seemed to be weak on the Rewind Collection.  The first release for "Clarissa Explains it All" (Melissa Joan Hart!) didn't get enough juice to secure a second release, a decision apparently made in Fall 2005.  Nick/Par decided that Adv/Pete&Pete's first release did okay enough to continue with S2, and I heard the plan was to do S2 in time for Christmas 2005, then do S3 of that along with YCDTOTV (as a replacement for more Clarissa) in Spring 2006.  But as the story at Zaranyzerak's second link (a late Jan. 2006 post) explains, first Adv/P&P S3 was pulled from the schedule (apparently because S2 sales tanked), then YCDTOTV's pulling quickly followed.

Why?  And why no YCDTOTV separately since then (even as a non-"Rewind Collection" release)?  Because, as stated at the story, "the YCDTOTV clearances were really complicated".  Our info on that came from somebody close to the show itself (not the studio, but the actual show), who was most certainly in a position to know.  It's my opinion that the rights issues were complicated enough that the powers that be gave up, or at least pushed the project onto the back burner (possibly until the flame slowly went out).  Which is why we haven't seen the show as a manufacture-on-demand (MOD) title, either...legal clearances are still an obstacle to that kind of release, too, of course.

At the time the opinion of Gord and I at TVShowsOnDVD, of our contact about YCDTOTV, and of other industry folks was that the pulling of Clarissa, Adv/P&P and YCDTOTV would *not* cause the end of the "Nick Rewind Collection" line of DVD releases, as it seemed to be too good an idea (and a popular idea with the fans).  Nevertheless, time has proven the tale: we've never seen that banner on a home video release since then.  And at this point I am certain we never will; Nick/Par has moved on.  If releases of Nick shows for that era do come along in the future, whether in stores or as MOD titles, then they probably won't carry that banner...it seems to be a dead concept.  And checking Christine McGlade's website/blog, which talked about the DVD effort for the show she was on, doesn't show any updates since August 2007 to prove otherwise (and stopped talking about the DVDs in December 2005!).  And we've fallen out of touch with the close-to-the-show contact I mention above (probably because there's nothing to talk about).  So that's that. Sigh...too bad.

RE: you can't do that on television
The truly sad part is that after The Six Million Dollar Man and The Bionic Woman are released on DVD, there will be 3 shows that aired on Nickelodeon in the top ten on TVShowsOnDVD - Salute Your Shorts (3), Hey Dude (5), and You Can't Do That on Television (10).  It's clearly obvious that these three shows have a tremendous fanbase and would sell millions of copies if they were released!  I refuse to give up hope that a company will give these shows a release on DVD.

Preppy, I hate to be the bearer... TV on DVD just doesn't sell "millions" of anything.  100,000 is considered an uber-success and is generally the benchmark for studios deciding whether or not to proceed to subsequent volumes.  Figures don't lie.  There may be millions of fans, but few of them consider television series to be "must own" DVDs.

You're right.  I think what I meant was that I believe these shows would sell enough to warrant season sets or complete series sets of them.

Not that he needs my help, but I can confirm that the numbers Brian mentions are real.

re: "But,i dont recall ever seeing those rewind releases in stores when they came out"
qb80, I have to say quite frankly that I've heard this sort of thing before, and it bugs me a bit. In 2005 when the Rewind titles (Clarissa, Pete & Pete) came out at first, these WERE on store shelves at several major retailers. It seems like many people may have only checked the regular "TV Shows" section of their local brick-and-mortar store, and didn't see it there (because it was a few aisles down, over in the kids' section...the place retailers thought was the best possible place to shelve it, after all!) and then these big fans...just gave up. Apparently quite a few fans who said they wanted the title "badly" may not have taken the time to simply ask a store employee "can you look this up and see if it's in stock somewhere, maybe I'm just overlooking it?"  If so, they would have probably found it and bought it.

This may not describe YOUR experience, qb80, but it apparently did happen. Amazon saw decent sales of these titles from people who didn't find them in-store (which is probably why Amazon later on got the manufacture-on-demand CreateSpace business of other Nick titles), but other retailers were VERY frustrated with low-or-no sales of DVD releases that were supposedly "automatic sellers". For WHATEVER reason, fans "voted" with their dollars by not tracking down and buying a copy of the title. That has got to be a big factor in why we didn't see more of the existing lines, and why other lines (like YCDTOT) haven't come to be yet.  Also, I have to wonder a bit about shows which aired on Nickelodeon, but were not outright owned by them...if the needed resources are in Nick's vaults and have to be found and removed in order for a home video release to happen, and if Nick doesn't have a stake in putting out those DVDs (because they're not the show's rights-owners), then how co-operative are they being, I wonder?  Brian would probably have more insight into that sort of thing than I would.  But it *could* be a sticking point as well, when it comes to some of that material.

More sets of Clarissa and Pete & Pete were being planned, but then yanked...so I would think we'll see them as MOD titles at some point.  For shows that were in discussion and never actually began production, like YCDTOT, I think it's way more up in the air.

With the announcement of Hey Dude and other Nick titles, are we any closer to seeing a release of YCDTOTV in any format?

RE: you can't do that on television
Was looking through this post and thought it was interesting that they were going to release YCDTOTV through the Rewind Collection... I remember buying Clarissa and both seasons of Pete & Pete and then being so upset about not getting season 3 of Pete & Pete on DVD... I had no idea at the time that YCDTOTV was going to come out on DVD...

Any chance of YCDTOTV coming out on DVD through Shouts Nickelodeon deal?
