MST3K vol.17

Correct me if  I'm writing something dumb that everyone else knows already(I'm new here), but I think SF may have a pattern with their MST3K dvd releases. Volume 14 had all odd number episodes, vol.15 had all evens, and the new vol.16 will have all odds again (20 AE had 1 odd,3 evens). It might just be a coincidence, but I have a feeling vol. 17. will have all evens. Might just make guessing a bit easier. Anyway, here are my guesses.

108- The Slime People

510- The Painted Hills

610- The Violent Years

1012- Squirm

RE: MST3K vol.17
There is a Vol XVII thread a little further down already, but no biggie.

Vol XIV was three odd, one even (1008 - Final Justice being the lone even). XV had three evens and one odd (0509 - The Girl in Lovers' Lane the one odd ep). XVI does have all odds, but that may be more coincidence than anything.

Regardless, your set would be a good one. I'd love to have Squirm on a set. And The Painted Hills would get us closer to finishing out Season 5 (though that truly may never happen).

As long as Horror of Party Beach is on it, I'll be the most thrilled gent ever. The other three eps would be great to have too. I hope SF does get the remaining Hercules movies on disc eventually.

I will stick to my guns as well though:

0110 - Robot Holocaust
0323 - The Castle of Fu Manchu
0702 - The Brute Man
0817 - Horror of Party Beach

Since this is a discussion about Volume XVII, I would just like to say to B Ward and Jordan Fields that having Trace and Bill at ComicCon discussing all things Crow is a great extra!  The posts on the SN website are all positive on this news, and it's the sort of "going the extra mile" effort that fans of this show appreciate and never really got from Rhino.  Nice job!

I seriously doubt we will see Gamera anytime soon...Being from Another Planet is a possibility but not really counting on it
The other 2 would be welcome in my book if my guesses are wrong
I kind of question myself if SF would do a 4th set in a row with Season 1
I start to think Rocket Attack USA could be the one for an early Joel on V. 17

That's what I was thinking before. Because of rights issues, like what happened with GODZILLA VS MEGALON. But apparently that wasn't the same case.

But if not GAMERA, maybe HERCULES UNCHAINED or STRANDED IN SPACE.

I can tell you to take Gamera out of any foreseeable lists.  We've tried and tried, but the Japanese really take their man-in-suit pictures seriously.  It doesn't look they want anyone poking fun and, sadly, that means that episode may never see the light of DVD laser.

Well I kind of already knew that..the entire Gamera series is lost & I would suppose the same things go for Time of the Apes, Fugitive Alien 1, & 2 and Mighty Jack ?
Correct ?
And furthermore the Arkoff AIP titles are probably close to impossible to get...
The only Season 3 title that has a chance is Castle of Fu Manchu
Stranded in Space, Master Ninja 1 & 2 probably are also going to be a challenge to get as well..

RE: MST3K vol.17

In honor of our good friends from Japan, I’m going to have an MST/Gamera/Sandy Frank marathon this weekend.  They haven’t stopped me (or anyone else for that matter) from poking fun.  They might as well capitalize on the loyal MST fanbase and get revenge by taking our money from us, because that’s the only way I’ll ever pay to watch a Gamera film.

In all honesty, it’s a shame that you folks at Shout won’t be able to release those episodes.  You’ve done a spectacular job so far!  I’m a thoroughly satisfied customer.  Not to mention that with the Gamera/Sandy Frank episodes you might have been able to work in the corresponding KTMA eps as the greatest extras ever included on a dvd.

It's also a shame that we won't ever get to see any Steve Vance artwork for the Gamera eps.  Being the obsessive completists that we are, maybe us MSTies should try to scrape up the money to pay him for lobby cards anyway.  Unless, of course, we could all get sued into oblivion for that.

No Gamera? That sure blows. Oh well, that's life. At least Shout! did the right thing to go straight to the real studio that owns the rights to these films instead of making the same mistake Rhino did with "Godzilla vs. Megalon"'s rights on Volume 10.

I can at least divert my attention towards some other MST classics. I'm glad another Roger Corman episode is coming out soon (Is that the last one left to be released or are there still more?), but I'm still wondering about the Ed Wood films. I mean I know "The Violent Years" still has a chance, but what about "Bride of The Monster", one of Wood's "best" films? PD or Wade Williams, nobody knows just yet.

Otherwise, you guys are still doing an amazing job with these DVDs. I look forward to see what else you guys can pull off.

RE: MST3K vol.17
There are plenty more Roger Corman titles that are in Season 3 ..It Conquered the World, Teenage Caveman, Viking Women and the Sea Serpent as well as Bert I Gordon movies such as the Amazing Colossal Man, War of the Colossal Beast, Earth vs the Spider which have ZERO chance of getting released unless something changes ..these are all in Season 3 along with the Gamera titles, which means that Season will be untouchable for years to come ,save for Castle of Fu Manchu and possibly Stranded in Space as well as the Master Ninja's 1 & 2,,,
Still worse is the Robert Lippert titles from Season 2 + Radar Secret Service & Last of the Wild Horses are all going to be hard to get..and some if not all Wade Williams titles are looking pretty hopeless as well..However those movies if they do come out will be before anything from Season 3's Gamera and AIP titles.
I think Violent Years has a very good chance of winding up on a Future SF set, maybe Bride of the Monster (but it is a Wade Williams title)

My dear friend Brian Ward,

Since the release of MST3k to dvd i have been eagerly awaiting Jack Frost to be in one of these sets.  do you know if there has been any difficulty in obtaining the rights to this?  is this one that will never see the light of day on dvd?  anyways, thanks for making the best dvd sets around....

Hmmm... Not sure how to answer that question.  All I can say is keep an eye out.

We have, most likely, just secured our fourth title for XVII.  Waiting for the deal to be signed.  And have a handful of other deals pending and about to go through, so it looks like we'll have some good collections down the road.  As always, things can change in a New York minute, so keep your fingers crossed.

And again, keep an eye out for an announcement closer to the release of XVI later this year.  Until then, we'll get started on the bonus material and menus for XVII and we'll see ya' soon.

Now that's some new and exciting news B Ward! Not only are we close to a confirmed final title for XVII, but more deals in the works. You and Jordan are making us some very happy MSTies! I think we all keep our fingers crossed, because we know that what comes out is not entirely in your hands unfortunately.

I know you won't reveal what episodes just yet, but can we expect the even Joel and Mike split for XVII? I really hope so. I'm a big fan of the set when their split up like that.

Though, in total, Mike had more episodes than Joel, we'd still like to keep the even split as much as we can on our sets.  We don't belong to either camp.  We just love MST3K and want to show the best we possibly can from both hosts.

Sounds like a 2 Joel and 2 Mike set
Actually if you count the KTMA season Joel did more episodes than Mike...I think Mike has more DVD episodes that are more obtainable. Someday a set will contain 3 or 4 Mike's again. I prefer Joel overall but any episode on DVD will do
That means more Season 1- Im sure to keep the even split of 2 and 2 alive

I can't answer for B Ward, but I have a bad feeling that they do.  It's a shame, because they aren't my personal faves, but I know they are popular within the MSTie community.

Leave it to the Japanese....they think that game shows that glorify abuse are hysterical, but make afew comments about guys in rubber suits, and they treat it as though you've just insulted their mothers!  I'll never figure them out.

I've noticed that anytime there's an announcement about a new box set, it always draws immedeate attention from people you thought never visit this site/thread anymore!    There's long discussions about whether people like or dislike the group of eps to be released, what extras will be on it, timeline of release date, etc etc.  It makes for interesting conversations, and proves that this show provides more topics to discuss than any other show in television history imo.

For myself, while I enjoy the CC-era shows more, I am curious as to whether a Sci-Fi era show will find it's way onto Volume XVII.  If so, I'd love to see Devil Doll, Horror at Party Beach, or Jack Frost among the chosen for the first MST release of 2010.  (Those being among what's considered possible to acquire rights to, anyway).  In any event, I look forward to getting my hands on the current volume coming up!

RE: MST3K vol.17
I have to agree with you. MST3K always gives people a lot to discuss - what episodes will see DVD release, what everyone wants to see on future releases, CC vs. SciFi, etc.

I wasn't old enough to watch the CC episodes when they were on and appreciate them, so my first true exposure to the show was the SciFi years. But once I really got into the show and started buying the boxsets, I became just as much of a fan of the CC-era.

I can't say I have a preference between the two...I go through phases. I've been on a Season 1 and 3 kick, though the last episode I watched was 0624 Samson vs. the Vampire Women with a friend who'd never seen Frank's exeunt.

I would give just about anything to see Horror at Party Beach on a boxset - hopefully Vol. XVII. Bloodwaters of Dr. Z or Invasion of the Neptune Men are high on my list as well for SciFi eps. I would also be all for putting the other two Hercules episodes out (Hercules; Hercules and the Captive Women). That would be two easy Joel shows to get.

But like you said, the next set is very highly anticipated for sure.

Beatniks...finally a Season 4 episode and its pretty good...classic JD movie from the 1950s
Final Sacrifice..never saw it coming or imagined it ...guess $$$ talks...a fan favorite of many around the MST Universe
Blood Waters of Dr. Z - I like this one...one of a handful I like from the SF era...
Thank you Brian...youve done it again, I like this set better than 16...

All I can say about this set is.......WOW!

Just when we thought Shout! had achieved greatness with Volume XVI, here they go topping themselves!  This set's content was so strong that a let out a gasp so strong it made my wife come running in from three rooms away, thinking I was having health problems! lol  After all of the fuss raised about Final Sacrifice not being available, suddenly it comes out that it will have a march 2010 release!  Amazing what alittle extra money can do!

Plus, I love The Beatniks and have yet to see The Crawling Eye and Dr. Z.  This is another highly anticipated set, at least in my view!

I can tell you that the two episodes you haven't seen are fantastic. This is a monumental boxset, probably even more so than Vol. XVI, which is a huge boxset in its own right with Warrior of the Lost and World and Night of the Blood Beast.

I'm really happy about "Bloodwaters of Dr. Z."  I loved seeing it on MST3K and when it aired I tried to track down the movie un-MSTied.  I found that the movie has its own website (under its alternate title, "Zaat!") and for a short time they were selling limited edition collector's editions of the movie on VHS (I got mine!).  I wrote to them back in September of 2007 and asked them if they'd ever put the movie out on DVD, and they actually wrote back and said that they were indeed working on that at the time, and were excited about the project.  I don't know how long these things take, but I've tried following up with them to see if they're any closer to putting out the movie but they haven't responded since.  So... maybe Shout Factory - d'ya think we might see a "Zaat!" special edition DVD in the future from you guys?

RE: MST3K vol.17

I finally got my first 2010 calendar this week, and when looking at today's date realized the release of Volume XVII isn't so far away now.  Sometimes I'm simply amazed at how time flies!!

Earlier in this thread, I mentioned how new release info seemed to trigger many topics of discussion.  I just thought of one: how will Steve Vance draw Crow and Servo for the mini-poster of "The Beatniks"? I can picture the other three titles and their possibilities....C & T being chased by a giant eyeball for "The Crawling Eye", C & T in the woods with black-masked thugs going after them for "Final Sacrifice", and C & T captured in a laboratory with catfish for "Dr. Z".  But for some reason I can't think of a good one for "Beatniks"; maybe C & T dancing to "Sideburns Don't Need Your Sympathy"? Servo as Eddie Crane singing while Crow, playing Mooney, holds a knife menacingly behind him? I'd love to read any suggestions for those who share my curiousity.

Anyone know when that's going down?

It may sacrilege to say, but I actually prefer One Crazy Summer to Better Off Dead.

That's why I cherish my "One Crazy Summer" VHS tape and DVD.

Bobcat Goldthwait in a Godzilla suit with William Hickey's cigar smoke billowing out of the mouth as he stomps across the little model of Beckerstead Estates crushing the houses amid little explosions to the great delight of the Amer-Asian banker as party goers run around screaming...

Pure cinematic gold!

Thank you, "Savage" Steve Holland and Bob Goldthwait. You guys RULE!

I can tell you to take Gamera out of any foreseeable lists.  We've tried and tried, but the Japanese really take their man-in-suit pictures seriously....

So nobody's posting right now 'cause we're all (passed out from) holding our breath for the next 5 days or so, awaiting the big announcement.  Any last minute hints?  How 'bout a "Wow, are you guys gonna be surprised..."?  Or maybe an "I never expect we'd ever get this one title that we can't tell you about"...?

The suspense for both, I must have to say, is killing me. I can't wait to have the boxset, but I love the announcement of a new set is just as exciting I think.

Oh yeah, and the subsequent guessing of the next set too... ;)

Peeling my eyes totally stung but it was sooooo worth it.

I think I may have just swooned (either that or it's an aftershock from last night's earthquake).  I've been praying for "Beast of Yucca Flats" for years - it's my all time favorite episode next to "It Conquered the World."  And "Jack Frost," too!  Which I'm hoping means we'll be seeing other Russo-Finnish eps in future boxed sets.  Yaaaaaaaay!

I really thought there'd be another season 1.  As a completist I was enjoying getting them, but I know everyone was wanting a break from that.

This whole set is a big ole box 'o good news.  Getting the news via Bannergram woulda been the only thing better.

Thank you so much Brian Ward and everyone on the SHOUT team.  You responded to my question about Jack Frost a couple months ago and gave me a little hope that it might see the light of day.  It was definitely worth the wait.  You guys are the best.  Seriously.  Thanks man.

Can I just chime in to say how utterly and completely wowed I am by Shout Factory's handling of MST3K? Volume 17 finally brings my all-time favorite episode to DVD (The Final Sacrifice), and now, Volume 18 is bringing two more of my all-time favorites to DVD (Beast of Yucca Flats, Jack Frost).

Seriously, I'm so thrilled with how Shout is handling my favorite show.

Good job, Shout! Excellent work, B. Ward! Keep 'em coming, please! You keep making 'em, and I'll keep buying 'em!

RE: MST3K vol.17
I saw the announcement right as I was leaving for work this morning, so I didn't have the chance to comment then. But now that I'm home, let me say how impressed I am again with SF. This set is fantastic top to bottom.

I'm not a huge fan of Lost Continent, but I know a lot of people who love that episode. Plus it's a S2 ep, which is pretty awesome in its own right. Hopefully that means that Jungle Goddess and King Dinosaur have a shot of coming out as well. Crash of the Moons is a no-brainer being the sequel to Manhunt in Space, which SF released earlier. So two quality Joel's for sure.

Beast of Yucca Flats was one a lot of folks were pushing for. I'm pretty pumped about it myself - it's a great one. Jack Frost is solid as well, and gives us another S8 ep (the first one put out by SF). But this hopefully opens the door for the other Russo-Finnish episodes.

All in all, I'm super pleased with this set, even though it doesn't have Horror of Party Beach. But hey, I'm sure there will be more sets on the way, and I'm sure SF will give it the right treatment as well.

Thanks, guys.  I'm enjoying working on the set, as always.  My only problem with this set is sitting through Beast of Yucca Flats.  Don't get me wrong; the episode is fantastic.  The riffs are awesome.  But the movie itself is so annoying, I find myself wanting to turn the volume to the movie down, while keeping the riffs up.  I'll get over it.  Looking forward to working more closely with the menus.

Always a pleasure!

Hi, I have noticed a nasty sounding static sound on the Final Sacrifice DVD. It happens approx 26:36-26:37 into the movie. Right after Crow says "I think his menace is undercut by the Baby on Board tag." So far I really am liking this box set of MST3K material; though I am less than thrilled by this perhaps technical issue. Is this just my DVD or do others notice it? Thanks

A Lippert movie...this opens up the flood gates for more Season 2..and Lippert..I love the Lost Continent ! Rock Climbing has never been so much fun (well funny) and watching for the exposed tushy scene with Sid Melton climbing the rock
Crash of the Moons I have seen many times and its just a nice low budget space opera
Its good to have the 2 Rocky Jones movies out now
Beast of Yucca Flats - a popular and utterly awful movie..it makes for a great episode
Jack Frost - # 2 or 3 on the old Rhino Poll
Again like Lost Continent this opens all sorts of possible sets with Russo Finnish and Lipperts..should be an interesting future indeed..

Brian:

A pretty great set!  BEAST OF YUCCA FLATS was a top request from me, so I'm excited about it.  The others are more obscure, which makes me kind of glad to get them as well.

I'll disagree with the crowd that isn't thrilled about getting Season One episodes.  I'd like Robot Monster and Untamed Youth, at least.

Keep 'em coming!  My copies of 17 (I order two!) are coming from Amazon.com today!

Best,

Thanks Brian!  Amazon informed me that my set is on the way...WOO HOO!  And that's also great news on the next selection of episodes.  I can't wait to see Steve Vance's art work as well (that's become an essential part of the experience).

Another part of the experience, which has sort of become more like a ritual for me, is throwing away my inferior DAP copies as these sets are released.  In fact, I've noticed my stack of DAP discs has really gotten much smaller.  Here's to the day when they're all gone!

I'd also like to offer my support for more season one episodes.

Please keep up the phenomenal work...it's tremendously appreciated!!!!

Hi Brian I am curious if you can answer this - was Lost Continent part of the Lippert titles in Canada ? I am super curious if you reached the owner and did what you said you did with Final Sacrifice - offer more money ?
Also does this open up the door for other Lippert Season 2 movies and while I am at it more Russo Finish titles like Jack Frost, Day the Earth Froze etc ?
If you cant answer I understand , but I hope you can shed a little light

Ordered !! :)
I have read the MST forums and the Crawling Eye was licensed through Wade Williams company which means we can get several more on future sets such as Rocketship XM, Project Moonbase , Bride of the Monster, Violent Years , Robot Monster
Yucca Flats and the Lost Continent are both Wade Williams titles so Im guessing "we offered him more money" applies to how SF got them :)
And furthermore, they are discussing Volume 20 !! Not just 19, but the big Two - Oh !!

That is disappointing. I was hoping it was just my DVD that had the issue. This is my first purchase of anything MST3K and it was due to the set having The Final Sacrifice. I agree it is not distracting enough to turn off the show, after all it is a hilarious episode and the audio craziness only lasts for a second. However, like I said before, it is disappointing. Thanks for responding.

The audio hit, as is the occasional visual hit, is from the original 1" source.  It's nothing we could correct in encoding or authoring, sadly.  These masters haven't aged incredibly well, so just about any visual or audio problem you see will have been from the original source tape.

Which of course makes it all the more imperative that these episodes get released on dvd quickly, Brian!

Can I say, particularly clever menus on this set?  I actually sat and watched each of them.  The Crawling Eye was ingenious.

Steve Vance is terrific as usual.

Keep up the great work.

On Crawling Eye I think there was a cut moment in the first segment where Dr Forester sends Joel the movie, I recall there being some creepy organ music which seems like was spliced in this release ?
What happened ?
PS I noticed that same sound glitch in Final Sacrifice but it didnt bother me at all..I liked it & gives the movie a jolt :) yes I turned it into a positive :)
