Appeal for MST3K host based box sets
I would like to suggest that Shout! Factory release two MST3K boxed sets: one with all the episodes hosted by Joel, and one with all the episodes hosted by Mike. I am a big fan of the show, but I have never found the episodes with Joel all that funny, and it's way too expensive to buy $60 boxed sets to get one or two episodes I like. I would easily buy a set that was all of the Mike-hosted episodes. In reading Netflix reviews, it seems to me that fans usually have a preference to one host or the other, and releasing a box set per host would allow fans to get exactly what they want. The fans that love both hosts would surely buy both to have the entire series. Please post if you are with me on the release of these two boxed sets. Maybe if fans show enough support for the idea they will do it. Here's hoping! LJ

I disagree. This would mean that Shout Factory would have to release an all joel boxset, wait 6 months and then release a mike set and so on. I've always hated the idea of themed sets and a set with episodes from just one season is just screwing yourself because eventually you're going to run out of releaseable episodes. Plus some episodes just don't fit into themes, try to connect Hamlet with any other episode in the series, You can't. Keep the format of 2 and 2 I say.

Shout Factory knows how to release televsion, now if only they could release Legends Of the HIdden Temple. One can always dream.

RE: Appeal for MST3K host based box sets

I would actually really dislike having an all Joel or all Mike boxset. Rhino did a couple of those. I was never a big fan of them then. I like the variety of having two of each host - keeps things interesting and gives the sets variety.

To me, the randomness of pulling from all ten seasons (theoretically of course given that some seasons are harder to get episodes from) and splitting them up evenly makes it fun waiting for the next set to be announced. You can actually take a stab at guessing with some hope of being right, too.

I think most fans enjoy both hosts, though I know there are those who prefer one to the other. I went back and forth myself for a while, but I've really come to have no preference at this point. So, unfortunately, I can't back the only one host sets.

Nope...  No sir.  I don't like...  not that they would do that anyhow, but indeed, this is a bad idea.  We are lucky to get any MST3k due to the difficulty of licensing the movies that appear in these episodes.  The idea of half & half is to appeal to both fans, and not to paint Shout Factory out to be money hungry goons, it does help if some shmuck that doesn't like Mike or Joel has to shell out the full $50-60 for 2 episodes they want and 2 episodes they don't want.  It perpetuates the chance of getting more episodes out on DVD.  Unfortunately, money is what makes the world go 'round, and appealing to one fan's whims doesn't ring up sales.  SF know exactly what they are doing...  and life is good for me.  I love Joel and Mike equally!  Hooray for me!

At Shout!, we're fans of both hosts for entirely different reasons.  We're aware that each has his own following, but we're finding that most fans at least enjoy their less-favorite host's episodes when we release them to DVD.  So, I'd have to say we're going to be sticking with the combo for as long as we can.  The truth is, because Mike shot more episodes than Joel, and there are always episodes we'll not be able to release because of licensing, there may come a time where you see a lot more Mike than Joel.  But until then, we're happy with the formula we've worked out.

Sounds good Brian.

Say, I had heard that you already had two title confirmed for XVII. Have any more titles come into your hands? I know you won't say which ones at this juncture...but it's always interesting to see how things are shaping up for that next set.

Honestly, I've been away at a convention in Kansas City for the last several days, so I'm not sure where we are at the moment.  But I'll find out.

RE: Appeal for MST3K host based box sets

At times I thought Rhino intentionally did "host-based" boxed sets themselves; remember Volumes 4 & 5 were all Mike (all Sci-Fi era, come to think of it) and then Volume 6 was pre-dominately Joel (3 eps and Shorts volume).  While it's been argued that Volumes 4 and 5 are the best sets released so far, those who stress that generally favor Mike anyway (and in some cases have a big disdain for Joel).  While I do prefer Joel over Mike, it's only because I started watching MST when Joel was on. I'll always contend that Mike was the perfect replacement for Hodgson, and the show didn't miss a beat.

Frankly, I'm glad that SF is releasing these eps that stretch out from different eras. Volume XIV, for example, had both a Joel and Mike ep that I had never seen before (Mad Monster and Final Justice).  And it won't suprise me if something like that happens again.

This is what I mean about Joel Season 1 episodes..'there might come a time where you will see a lot more Mike than Joel " At least Season 1 means more Joels ..
Hopefully it will be a long time for us to run out of Joel episodes...Season 3 is going to be the killer for not having more Joel as there are still some in Season 4 and 5 that should be obtainable..
If you count KTMA Joel and Mike are more or less even in episodes shot, but the K season will never wind up in a set...
With all sets you can not please everyone but at least we do get them...and besides Amazon has had pre-orders for less than 40.00 on sets...and there is Overstock and others as well that you wont have to spend 60.00.
What I wouldnt mind actually is the hosts talking about the show before the episode plays (ala Volumes 4 & 5)

RE: Appeal for MST3K host based box sets

I always wondered, even back in the days when Rhino was distributing MST3K, if there was any preference of one host over another.  When MST started coming out on DVD, for example, there was a lopsided amount of Mike eps to Joel: after the release of Volume 5, there were several more Mike-era eps, and I for one was starting to wonder if Joel had become completely forgotten.  Thankfully, that ratio has become more balanced, although I do agree that in the end Mike will have more commercially-released eps than Joel, based largely on the fact that Season 3 seems to pose a major problem for attaining rights to several movies (Gamera, Master Ninja, and the Susan Hart-owned titles). In fact, I think it would be easier for SF to get some of the early Season 8 titles before getting any Season 3.

By the way, in terms of overall episodes, Mike does have a slight edge on Joel:  90 to 86 (with KTMA eps factored out).

That's really not a good idea. Lot's of people have already said this, but it's great that Shout! has given us a variety of episodes. It's great to see how the series evolved over the years.

Agreed Mark, especially for folks that aren't as familiar with one host or the other (more often Joel than Mike).

Plus seeing that evolution is a good. The interaction between characters, the references to old episodes. Having things spread out makes all that possible.
