Small Wonder

I'd love to finally see this show on DVD. Hey Brian, do you think Shout! could release this? Please :)

It seems like my friends are always telling me that I'm the only 80s kid who never watched this show. They all talk about how awesome it was and how they'd love to see it again on DVD. They even bring random strangers into the conversation....seriously, everyone seems to love this show. I'd definitely buy it just so I can finally see what everyone is talking about!

Small Wonder has been the subject of many a topic on the Shout forums. It's number 1 on my unreleased shows list and seems to have grown a cult following. Great 80s escapism for late Gen Xers. Would love to see this on dvd.

I know it's very early days, but Brian - you mentioned the word "volume". Does this mean it won't be season sets? I'm happy either way, but if you could elaborate more that would be great.

Yeah, uh...thanks for wasting your resources on one of the LAMEST SHOWS EVER PRODUCED....it's sad some people can only view things thru the prism of nostalgia, instead of recognizing that it was truly a wretched piece of dreck. Yeah, yeah...say what you want. Blah blah.

RE: Small Wonder
It is very early on.  Just had our first real creative conversation on it this morning.  The DVD will be produced by Kristin Kennedy, a very capable component in the Shout! DVD department, and one of the bigger Small Wonder advocates within the company.  Maybe, if I can talk her into it, she'll grace us with her presence on the forum.

As for seasons vs. volume, I just used a generic term.  I'd have to actually investigate a little further to tell you for sure, but I'm sure you'll be happy with it.

As for nostalgia vs. quality, we'll certainly see.  This is one of those titles that need to be bought by all the fans, because if it doesn't sell, we could abandon future volumes.  So tell all your friends and post on all the forums.  Small Wonder will hit retail in early '10 and will need your support!

I've already started spreading the word as soon as I found out!  I can't wait for this release.  I'll definitely be buying it.  It IS one of the most highly requested unreleased shows on tvshowsondvd (yes, it's true nerdysomething) so a lot of children of the 80's want their fix of nostalgia.

Pthetic, threating to release 1 season then no more -

1 - release season 1  and a complete series the same day - ala Ally MacBeal - that way people can invest and have the whole series

2 - and actually make the series available in Kmart and WalMart - otherwise alot of people will not even know it is out

RE: Small Wonder

That is the way it is with most DVD companies.  Very few companies will reelase the entire series the same day as the first season.  Not many people will buy a complete series as opposed to season sets.  How many first season DVD sets are out there without the next season because sales were too low?  A lot.

Most DVD sets I bought were not bought at K Mart or Wal Mart.  All of those I've been in have had crappy selections and overpriced sets.  I don't think the people buying Small Wonder will be those looking for DVD sets in K Mart and Wal Mart.  If you fear the rest of the seasons won't be released than buy the first season.

RE: Small Wonder
Why is being honest about business a threat?  We are, after all, a business.  We need to make money off our releases.  They're not all passion projects.  We've been asked for a long time to release Small Wonder, we've projected a certain number of sales that we think is realistic and so we are.  But if season one costs more than it makes, it's a BAD business decision to continue just to complete everyone's collections.  And Small Wonder was a 96-episode series.  If we were to do a complete series, that's another 13-16 disc set behind Transformers, G.I. Joe and It's Garry Shandling's Show.  There simply aren't enough fans, by our estimation, willing to buy a single $180 complete series set of Small Wonder.  We can't afford to release four seasons on faith that they'll sell.  I'm sorry.  Unlike Ally McBeal, this show is very niche.  You have to recognize that.

Secondly, saying to make them available in this store or that store implies we have that kind of say.  The stores choose what's available in their stores.  And Wal-Mart is insanely picky.  Don't know anything about K-mart.  Target is also picky.  Even if we do get it into Wal-Mart and Target, they're not guaranteed to order enough to send one or two out to every store in the country.  We don't choose which individual stores get what.  They do.  So even if Wal-Mart is carrying Small Wonder, you might not think so, if you walk into one of their stores and not find it on the shelves.

Well said Brian, and I for one would not be one to buy a complete series of Small Wonder but am more than willing to buy the first season.  Hopefully all seasons if they're released.  It's much more affordable for me to buy season by season releases at my own pace.

Now if you guys were to announce a complete series set of Mr Belvedere that's a different story.  I'd pre-order that in a heartbeat .

12thman maybe you should give Small Wonder a try.  Who knows maybe you might like it better now lol .

As a big fan of Small Wonder, I must say that season sets are what I want too. They look nicer on the shelf / in a collection and are more digestable to casual buyers. Plus a lot of people need time in between season sets to save a bit of money and actually watch all the episodes. And lastly I agree with Brian... business is business sadly. Everyone has bills and people to pay.

themeister I completely 100 percent agree with your logic I am a big garry shandling fan and the new  series set is alittle bit out of my price range I would rather  buy the sets  one at a time than the complete collection. There are the rare exceptions I would save up and buy a Mr Belvedere complete collection like TV_Fan had  said  but  on a normal basis it's very expensive for me to buy a entire collection all at once I wish I could though.

I agree that season/volume sets, if the sales are good, is the only reasonable expectation.  I'll buy as many seasons as Shout can feasibly release -- I hope the fans and the general media-buying public support these releases.  Where some of the major studios' releases have dried up or scaled way back this year, Shout has done a wonderful job releasing fan favorites with high quality and attention to detail.  Shout is quickly becoming one of my favorite DVD companies and I wish them all success with all of their titles, even the ones I don't care for.  People may gripe about one season getting released here or there and left hanging, but as frustrating as that may be, I always think 1 season/volume is better than none!  So everybody buy the first Small Wonder set and I'm sure Shout will be happy to sell us the rest of them too.

I totally agree with the "one season is better than none" - especially when it's done well. Though of course I'd prefer all shows to be fully completed - especially when the later seasons are the best in the series.

12th Man - glad you agree. I don't live in the US and so price is a huge factor for me. I need to pay an extra $17 for postage on each dvd set I buy. The Simon & Simon release at $45 + $17 p&p nearly wiped me out for the month. A total of $62 for one season ain't cheap.

Oh happy day! We have literally been waiting decades for the Small Wonder DVDs and now the day to throw away those poor quality VHS rips is drawing closer. The missing episodes may finally be revealed. Please release all seasons, and I will gladly purchase each one. This is one of the quintessential 80s shows that is so cheesy, it is actually better and funnier today than it was back then. Who could forget the episode where Vicki leaks nitrous oxide and the show ends with the whole family high on laughing gas? Or the strangely topically current one where Vicki fine-tunes a car to go 50 miles a gallon? And of course, all of the mangled, nonsensical, faux computer speak present in nearly every episode? I wonder if there will there be any extras such as the cast (minus self-destructor Jerry Supiran, of course) reunion on Mike and Juliet back in January? I had almost given up hope for this set, but it looks like Small Wonder will return after all!

RE: Small Wonder

This is great to hear, totally found this post by accident since another site had an article on 80's shows that shouldn't be made into movies. There's definitely a love/hate thing with stuff like this, but considering some of the insanely obscure/weird stuff and shows other people are putting out, it doesn't seem right that this got left off the nostalgia train.

I was actually on this show, and aside from some horrible quality youtube videos which sporadically appear, there's been no way for me to see those episodes since the original off-air tapes we had are long gone. This'll be awesome to have. Hopefully you guys get a good enough response to do the full run of seasons!

Warren!!! Nice to hear from you and glad you'll be getting the dvd set finally. The episode "Heartbreaker" which you premiered in was the one and only episode I taped on VHS back in 1985. So it's always been a favourite of mine. What are you up to nowadays? Do you have any contact with the cast?

Oh and looking forward to seeing you on season 6 of Simon & Simon hopefully. I believe you guest-starred in the episode "Competition - Who Needs It". Nice! Shout Factory seem to be covering your whole acting career! :)

Hey Kristin! Thanks for joining us on the forums. Nice to know we had a SW fan on the inside all along, haha.

Not too sure what I can personally suggest for the show except that I hope the cover art is nicely done - something eye catching with V.I.C.I. on there or the whole cast. I'm not overly bothered about bonus features, unless it's a cast reunion or cast interviews. Is that possible? Slim cases goes without saying - please no foldouts like the Punky set.

Any idea when we can get a glimpse of the box art? Will it be a complete first season with all 24 episodes?

Hello Kristin and thanks for gracing us fellow Small Wonder fans with your presence.  Thanks to yours and Shout!s persistance and perseverance we are finally getting our beloved show on DVD.  As themeister asked, will this be the enitre first season?  As for ideas on bonus features, interviews/cast reunions are always nice.  I tend to prefer interviews over commentary, but any extras are nice.  I'm just happy we're finally getitng this show on DVD and have done what I can to spread the word.  It's always nice to know the DVD set will be produced by an actual fan of the show.  That's what makes Shout! a leader in the DVD market.  I look forward to buying this set, and hope it's only the first of several.

RE: Small Wonder
Hey meister, that's awesome. I haven't seen anyone from "back then" forever, it's a much longer story as far as falling out of acting and leaving LA, but as I'm older I have a face for visual effects, so I'm strictly "behind the scenes" doing computer graphics, animation, and VFX for various things. Have been back in LA a while now though, currently working on Avatar (the other one with the blue people, not the Airbender, heh).

A friend of mine through weird coincidence worked with Supiran on something years ago and said he still has the same winning personality we all remember. Gah. I ran into someone else who has Emily as their agent, so there's this six degrees thing going on from time to time. Oh and it's kind of silly but another bit of trivia, the 3D logo that everyone seems to have appropriated all over the net, I actually built and rendered that after a random encounter with the infamous Vipond's site.

I had no idea about Simon and Simon! I need to keep up with Shout!'s other output, that would be cool to have for all 2 minutes of it.

Anyway sorry for the digression, to be on topic to Kristin, the usual features would be nice to have, anything behind the scenes from back in the day would be phenomenal, EPKs or maybe examples of the show dubbed into other languages, oddball things like that would be really cool to see. And of course if you guys have any notion of putting together any kind of reunion, count me in, if I'm not too obscure. :)

Hi All,

Warren! Its so great you found the forum. My favorite episode at this time is The Suitor when you tried to date V.I.C.I..
Total classic. You should get in touch with me through: info@shoutfactory.com. I'd love to get you involved.
Plus, Smoky Mountain Christmas is one of my favorite seasonal movies. I mean come on; it's a Christmas movie with an evil witch in it.

Anyhow, to the questions. Yes, this is a complete Season One set. We don't have art mock ups at this point but I'll see what I can do about a sneak peak.
Interviews! I want them too! We will see what the talent says.

Also, have you kids seen the Small Wonder E! True Hollywood Story?

RE: Small Wonder

Hey Kristin, great to see you're consulting the fans for DVD suggestions. Here are a few suggestions if any of these things are possible, or if they even exist:

  • Any lost episodes out there?
  • Outtakes
  • Cast interviews
  • Audition tapes
  • Mike and Juliet Show reunion segment from January 09
  • The Jerry Supiran Story from YouTube - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FImOZGG8u64
  • Commentary on selected episodes by whomever you could find. For instance, Warren, on this board, would be great. Tiffany Brisette, Dick Christie, and Marla Pennington all seemed eager to discuss the show after so many years when they appeared on Mike and Juliet.
  • Mini documentary with a Where Are They Now?, a retrospective on the show's history (http://members.surfbest.net/smallwonder@surfbest.net/SWonTV/SeriesBackground.html), a segment on why it has been lost for all these years, or something about how the show appeared around the world where it was known as Super Vicki in some areas.
  • Whatever EPK or documentary type stuff that can be found
  • Some fun, campy stuff like trivia or maybe a glossary of Ted Lawson's made-up technical terms and what they might mean today.

Thanks!

Hi! I couldn't resist chiming in, it's too cool that DVDs will finally see the light of day. Sent you an email.

It's too bad no one's ever snatched up Smoky Mountain Christmas, a genuine DVD would be wonderful..it's such a crazy combination of cast and crew, too. They actually still show it on CMT sometimes, I've found some fuzzy bootleg DVDs on ebay but that's as close as it gets. If only I'd known those two things would be the hilights of my acting career..heh, doh.

I think that's a heck of a list of features, seconded for sure..anything like that would be great to have. I remember there were definitely outtakes, usually when either Dick would flub a tongue twister he had to say and then be really funny, or when Jerry would blow a line in some cutesy way on purpose and mug for a bit. But other archival things like that would be fantastic.

P.S. The THS parody was terrible/great/terribly great ;) It's definitely still in the collective consciousness. Needed a longer segment on "I love the 80's".

The real Jerry Supiran is actually on facebook. If you do a search for his name, he’s there. You can tell it’s him.

Bonus features would be great, but I'm happy with just good quality episodes. I thought bloopers would be quite good, but not sure how easy they are to get hold of.

Warren it’s nice to know you’re back in the biz, albeit behind the scenes. I’ve not seen Rocky Mountain Christmas, but 80s Christmas movie with Dolly Parton ticks all my retro boxes. Parts of it are on youtube - not bad quality either.

Warren - why does your premier episode have 3 different titles on the net… The Suitor / Nerd Crush / Heartbreaker? Which is official?

And have I missed something? Is TVfan really an ex-child star???

RE: Small Wonder
You know that's kind of a weird thing, I'd have to dig and see if I still have the script, they had names on them that often changed down the line..I know for sure I have the other episodes but not sure if that got lost because it was older.

I seem to remember it being called The Suitor originally, I think it may have been Nerd Crush by the time it was done..don't know where Heartbreaker came from. Maybe someone with more encyclopedic production insider knowledge can find out. Need a trivia track with a small wonder historian on the DVD, heh.

btw Kristin did you get my email?

RE: Small Wonder suggestions
some suggestions: 1.The Cover Art will be the most important of all. You could have a fan submission contest to generate some good ideas. The back of each season box could look like the box on the back of VICI's back. With the red dress slightly open to expose the robot's acess hatch. Verbiage could be inside the box or under it. Borders or extra space on the front or back could have green printed circuit boards as decoration. I think a 3-D cover similar to the HULK season sets would be best, in any case the art should be big and cute. The art should stand out from other season sets if possible. With these types of shows, they should be done right the first time or not at all. 2. EXTRAS! If the extras could include new cast interviews, this would be a big hit with fans and a definitive edition. Also, there are many possible extras to collect, such as Tiffany Brissette's commercials and Ted E Ruxpin clips of the era. These clips are not on the Teddy Ruxpin DVD release, even though they were on the original show regularly. There are a few TV spots including a recent one with Tiffany and The Lawsons on a news interview. There is the teenage small wonder themed "godzilla giant robot" style commercial starring Tiffany Brissette. There are pictures from a magazine that came out a year ago where they took new pictures of Tiffany, a video, and an interview. If old extras were collected, in addition to new ones, this would be ideal, and be a quality production. Less important could be credits in text menus listing actors credits such as Brendan Brindle's role as a father in Wargames, etc. There should be commentaries, especially by Tiffany if possible. 3.Advertising. There are many people on the Itunes store. If there could be an ad there, millions will see it. Since small wonder is a niche audience, news should be directed at the many fan site and retro TV sites, nostalgia sites, etc. However, more advertising would be needed to reach a larger audience, people who are mainstreamers who are more casual about nostalgia and would be surprised to see the show again. A free youtube advertisement through a video would be smart. orion1052003@yahoo.com

Here are some of the old extras, or archives that would be great to add to any season set of small wonder. If that is really Warren from the show, then his commentary and "where are they now" video clip would be great, and improve the quality of the first season set a lot. Also, on the fan sites, no one seems to know where Jerry Supiran is. I can also send you the recent magazine article interview with pictures on Tiffany Brissette from I think details magazine. Gathering a bunch of data and material would be good in researching a season set.Gimme an email, Kristen. orion1052003@yahoo.com

Oh, yeah, and the font on the back of the box should be in an 80's computer text font. Like a green letters on black screen type of thing. They used a TRS-80 computer with VICI in the first season, so a retro computer/ robotic theme would be good for the box fonts and DVD menus. Robots were a "cool" fad and all the rage in the 80s, maybe some robotic or primitive computer sounds could also be part of the menus when you select a choice or something.

Not sure how keen I am on a 3-d cover. I think simple but eye-catching is the way to go. 3-d packaging doesn't stand out as different angles marr the image. It can look messy.

Like I mentioned earlier... Jerry Supiran IS on facebook. There are also recent pics of him on the Small Wonder facebook fan page.

I'm not a fan of 3 D covers either.  I agree a plain but catchy cover art scheme is the way to go.

I'm pretty useless at designing cover art but may give it a go. Whatever it is it will be amateurish - I'm warning you now!

Arrggghhh I just realised I totally misread your post Kirstin. I thought this was specifically for dvd cover artwork - didn't realise it was for general art work. Although I already submitted something, I might try again now that I know there's a broader perspective.

Hi videotrading.  I had a youtube clip of the Mike and Juliet with Tiffany Brisette but unfortunately it was blocked.  I am not happy about it but I did see the clip before it was banned.  Tiffany looked great!!!  The cast included Dick Christie, Marla Pennington, Edie McClurg and of course Tiffany Brissette.  I am hoping to locate an open clip of this brief interview.  Who knows maybe if Shout factory releases Small Wonder Season 2, I hope they include the interview.  That would be awesome.

I would also love to grab My Two Dads Season 2 and Mr. Belvedere Season 4.  I can't wait...

Season 2 coming soon.  I just preordered through Amazon.com.  I can't wait to get my hands on Small Wonder Season 2.  I wish I lived in the States because availability and delivery is much quicker.  Canada unfortunately falls under the international category in terms of mail delivery even though we are neighbours.  lol.

I finally got Small Wonder Season 2.  It is fantastic.  I am soooo happy.  The condition is excellent with a few glitches but that's okay.  It is a fairly old TV show.  Season 3 and 4 to be coming soon I hope.  I recommend getting this hilarious TV show.  I love it.

Does anyone know how long season one and two will be available for purchase? I liked the series, but can't really justify purchasing them right now. Maybe I'll even wait to see if the entire series is released, maybe I'll splurge at Christmas or something, don't know. I'd just hate to be all gung ho to buy the season just to find out that I waited too long and they are no longer available.

Also, how poor were the sales for season one? I would have expected it to do better than the "lackluster sales" description from Amazon.com. Maybe seven months isn't long enough to see how well it sells?

Cheers,

Daggertooth

daggertooth, in regards to any TV show on DVD with multiple seasons that is no longer in first-run, in which only the first season or so has been released, I wouldn't recommend that you wait for all the remaining seasons to come out before buying them, because if you do that, it will take even longer than it should for them to come out.

Also, since S2 of SW is a "Shout! Select", keep in mind that those titles are not on the regular release schedule. If say, 500 (a number I made up) people bought season 2, then they have to guarantee that no more than that would buy the 3rd of 4 seasons that this show had.

RE: Small Wonder
My season 2 set arrived today, Im very eager to watch it.

I love how fast Shout Factory ships. I didnt think I would have it till next week.

   My only complaint is:
I was a little disappointed by the second season case.  It just didnt feel as nice as the first set with the two slim cases in the cardboard box.  Season 2 was just in a multi-dvd case.  Oh well dont get me wrong I am just glad to be able to watch this show again.

Cant wait for season 3
