Dennis the Menace & Dobie Gillis
Although these shows premiered almost two decades before I was born, I have to say that watching them on both Nick at Nite and TV Land, I have definitely become a fan of these two.  Both of them ran from 1959-1963 Dennis having 146 ep. and Dobie with 147 ep., these still haven't made it to DVD as season sets yet.  Any chance on either or both of these for Shout! Factory?  These two shows need season set releases sooner rather than later!!

put me down as wanting both series on dvd.

If the situation with Max Shulman's estate ever gets resolved, I would love to finally have an official release for "The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis".

Dennis the Menace is a great show! I'd love to see it released on dvd and maybe some interviews with the cast. Jay North and Jeannie Russell have done nostalgia conventions. Not sure what happened to Tommy (Billy Booth) Dennis' best friend on the show though. Gloria Henry is the only one of the adult cast members to still be alive. She acted in a movie in 2005, but she is pretty up there in age now. How awesome would that be to get her though? She also did the E! True Hollywood story of Jay North in the 90s.

Brian,

I believe the rights to Dennis the menace are held by Sony and I know they have licensed other shows they own to Shout! Factory to release on DVD, so what are the chances of acquiring the rights and releasing season sets of this truly great and classic series?  With Dobie Gillis, I think the rights belong to Paramount (I could be wrong) and I am aware that Paramount rarely ever licenses out their property, but it is definitely worth the effort to try.  I think both shows have a strong fanbase.

"Dobie" is Fox, and unfortunately it's been held up by rights issues.

You are right, The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis is owned by 20th Century Fox.  I really do hope they get the issues with the rights ironed out, in order to begin releasing season sets of this show!  TV Shows On DVD website has this series ranked at 168 of unreleased shows people would like to see on DVD, which is actually a really good number.  Dennis the Menace is not extremely far behind Dobie Gillis.  Fans need these two on DVD!!

I just found out recently, from Sitcoms Online, that Billy Booth died back in 2006 and also, Robert John Pittman who played the little kid Seymour passed away.  I'm really surprised about these two because they were only in their fifties.
So it's just Jay, Jeannie and Gloria that are left from the cast. That's sad. :(  Hopefully the show will get a dvd release some time in the near future.

I just wanted to revisit this thread I started and put the idea out there again about how much the fans would LOVE to own these two great shows on DVD season sets.  I do realize that Dobie Gillis has some rights issues at the moment with Max Shulman's estate, but I have never read anything about any issues with rights on Dennis the Menace.  Please, Shout!, talk to Sony and license this show and release Dennis the Menace - The Complete First Season. Sometime next year would be absolutely fantastic!!

While I wouldn't buy Dobie Gillis, I'd like to add my support for purchasing Dennis the Menace on DVD if Shout Factory were to license it. It's a great television show and my DVD collection will remain very incomplete without it.

I would actually be psyched about Dennis the Menace, that is, until he lost the overalls.  I dunno.  Once Dennis kinda grew up, the antics seemed a lot less hilarious to me.  I don't know.  But I'd love to do the show.  And our acquisitions gang are in on the loop.  So, I'm sure they'll look into it.

RE: Dennis the Menace & Dobie Gillis

He doesn't lose the overalls until season 4. The series maintained a very consistent high quality until the late stages of season 3 when Joseph Kearns passed away, then it lost it's footing for the remaining episodes of that season with the first subpar episodes the series had had.

It regains it's footing somewhat by season 4. And although it never matches the program's earlier days, there are still brief moments of glory in season 4 (There's several excellent episodes like the one where Dennis and Tommy tie notes to pigeons in the park, not realizing Mr. Wilson had a stock tip written on one of the pieces of paper, with the boys, Henry, and Mr. Wilson having to go to an abandoned house where the pigeons roost at night that's supposedly haunted to retrieve it from the pigeon). Often in season 4, it's Mr. Wilson causing the problems more so than Dennis, so I don't think Dennis being 11 or so hurts it so much since his childhood antics are much toned down from earlier seasons. So I would hope if this program gets picked up, even season 4 will make it out.

I wonder why it's been untouched so far? It clearly would be a strong seller judging by how many I see online expressing their desires for it. Would whoever that puts it out have to license the Dennis the Menace IP from the comic strip syndicators?

I would love to purchase the entire DOBIE GILLIS series on commercial DVD, and would encourage Shout! to release it if possible.  DENNIS THE MENACE wouldn't interest me, however.

It has been three months since we've heard from Brian Ward, who had expressed a strong interest in acquiring and releasing Dennis the Menace on DVD.  Any news to report from the Shout! Factory team on giving this series season set releases?

"Dennis the Menace" with Jay North was my favorite show when I watched it as a kid on Nickelodeon in the 1980s. I would buy the dvds in a heartbeat and I know my brother would buy them too. I think it's a travesty that Dennis hasn't been released on dvd yet.

(I have no interest in "Dobie Gillis", though.)

The fans haven't heard anything since January, when Brian Ward stated that he would be psyched about putting Dennis the Menace on DVD.  Fortunately, the series is owned by Sony, a company that Shout! has a good working relationship with. Any news to report on this from the Shout! team?

Dennis the Menace is based on a comic strip so there would likely be underlying rights issues.

Well, Hazel was based on a comic strip, and it got a release (although only season 1).  I wonder if they had to deal with rights issues.

It's a DAMN shame that everything gets released on Dennis the Menace except this show. It is the BEST depiction of Dennis done by Jay North in that TV series but no word or mention of it ever on DVD. We can get the crappy countless Dennis the Menace movies released along with the cartoons but not the TV show. Come on folks I can't imagine the licencing being as complicated for Dennis the Menace as it is for the Adam West Batman TV series. What gives? When will we see Dennis the Menace the TV series with Jay North on DVD??? Please.

I have been obsessed with the possibility of Dennis the Menace coming to DVD for YEARS. It was the #1 show that definited my childhood in the 1980s, watching it on Nickelodeon EVERY day after school, and now that I have kids I want them to see it (though I'll probably be disappointed if they don't like it!). Anyway, I had my fingers crossed that 2009 would have been the year, being the 50th Anniversary of the pilot, but it came and went. I just discovered Shout Factory because I stumbled across the Patty Duke Show at the store, and I'm so excited that I did.... what an awesome company!!! Anyway, lets keep our fingers crossed!!! Can't wait to watch it again!!

There are two remaining series from the late '50s, early '60s that I want to complete the recreation of my childhood TV watching.

They were both based on single-panel comic strips, and they're both owned by Sony now (I think) -- and they are "Dennis the Menace" and "Hazel."

I believe they both were the highest-rated sitcoms on TV in their first seasons.

Did watching Dennis inspire anyone else out there to build their own treehouse as a kid? Him and his friends used to have sleepover parties in that treehouse! Mine was pretty lame comparatively, but at least it inspired me to give it a shot!

I,  for one would love to see DTM released on dvd. One of my favorite shows, and rarely plays these days. After the wonderful job Shout Factory has done with Leave It To Beaver, and Dragnet. I would purchase DTM immediately upon it's release. I sincerely hope it becomes available in the near future .
