Member since: 8/9/2009 | | MAX HEADROOM - the UK Movie and Complete US series request (and a couple of others, as well) | | After having seen the wonderful job Shout Factory has done with some of my favorite television shows, I would like to formally request that they release a complete MAX HEADROOM television set. This, of course, would include the original UK movie, and the entire US television series. From what I recall, it wasn't that many episodes, and while there may be some international rights to clear up, I don't believe music is an issue. As a show, it seems to fit in nicely with Shout's ideologies.
And since we're on the topic, I'd also love to see a complete set of:
GET A LIFE
E.Z. STREETS
and
BAKERSFIELD P.D.
Thanks for listening.

Losing the music on that wouldn't be so awful since 90% of it was just music videos edited in and they only occasionally had mild connection to whatelse was going one (playing "Mary's Prayer" in the middle of the interview with Mary Tyler Moore for instance). Grace Jones' "I'm Not Perfect" could be necessary - but how much could they charge for that these days?
Plus the Christmas show.
I did it for the kicks! |

WB's always been wary about third-party licensing, so right now, we're just focusing on making this relationship a good one and developing the best possible sets we can. I grew up loving Max Headroom, so hopefully, I can turn in a good product and give WB a good reason to give us more titles.

Member since: 1/22/2009 | | RE: MAX HEADROOM - the UK Movie and Complete US series request (and a couple of others, as well) | Ok, here's the thing. The recent announcement that Shout! will be releasing The Norm Show and Max Headroom has sparked major excitement. The spark has come from the fact that Shout! has gone into uncharted waters by partnering with Warner Bros. for the first time. This gives glimmers of hope that Shout! will release more Warner shows. I hope they do, but let's just remember that Shout! is just like Warner or Sony, they need to turn a profit to stay alive. Period. The thing that makes Shout! different from the rest, is that if they release a title in stores and it doesn't sell, they can come back with later seasons exclusively on their website. That's why we love them so much!!! I sincerely hope that Shout! aggressivly persues every TV title that's out there, but I want it to be done economically and what's most wanted by fans.
As for Warner titles, I hope Shout! gets more titles in the future. I really do! Right now, I would like to formally request to Mr. Brian Ward and the team give thorough consideration into four titles. The numbers that have been provided to me by tvshowsondvd.com show that these three titles are in the top 100, Alice at #31, Step By Step at #18 and Head of the Class at #61, however it will soon be at #59 with the recent announcements of Ghostwriter and Max Headroom.
I love these three titles, but aside from that, I genuinly believe that they would sell very well. I would also like to request that Shout! release the remaining 5 seasons of Mama's Family, syndicated cuts or not. Since there were major complaints about the syndicated cuts in season 1, perhaps you could release a complete series on your exclusives page for those that don't care about the cuts.
I thank you for your consideration, AD. |

B Ward, I have an important question for you:
Are you going to do a HD digital version of the series to keep it "stored" in your archive for a future BD release? I think it's time to preserve this overlooked gem on HD, the best way possible. |

No one really thought to keep original source material. Once you had your masters for broadcast and syndication, you were set. Most series from the '80s, etc. are found on 1-inch if they haven't already been transferred to Digibeta. Occasionally, you'll luck out, but it's not common.

I cannot WAIT. Seriously. I found out over lunch at Gallifrey One last week-end, and possibly for the next hour there was MASSIVE GEEKING. I still have the picture book from the Channel 4 telefilm (I was a Nick Grace fan thanks to Robin of Sherwood) and have pretty much followed Morgan Shepperd's entire career thanks to Blank Reg from MAX and GARGOYLES (where he played Jon Frakes' dad Petros Xanatos, and Odin Allfather). I know how gorgeous a job you did with THE MIDDLEMAN, and am full of glee and anticipation!

I just wanted to thank Mr. Ward and Shout! Factory for the exciting news. It's great to hear that a real fan of the show is working on bringing Max to DVD.
Will it be possible to include the original Channel Four TV Movie, or is that a whole other can of worms?

Is there any chance the DVD release includes the French audio track?
Being a french native speaker, I would appreciate it very much.
The serie was released in France on VHS, and was also broadcasted on the french PAY TV channel Canal+
So, the material should be easy to find.
If ever you think it would be too hard the synchronize the french PAL audio track with the NTSC master, I could provide help or do the work for you.
All I need is the master material.
You know, this release is probably the only one we will see for the next decade(s), so I would like it to fit my language.
I hope you will answer positively to this. :-) |

Accidentally, the broadcast was archived by the french INA Institute.
Click <HERE> for the detail.
According to the post <HERE>, it looks like season 2 was released on Laserdisc in France.
So the french audio track is definitively not lost. ;-) |

Unfortunately, certain issues arise with including multiple dialogue tracks. I'm afraid I can't go any further with that, but I can say our set will not include French.
I can say that the bonus material is looking more and more up. In fact, I've been asked twice today to cut down on some of the back-of-box copy, due to the amount of bonus material we currently have lined up. While some of this may change between now and the date the set goes off to the plant, I can say it's all looking very positive and I'll keep you all informed.

Perhaps you could have a promotional tie-in with the Max DVD and Art of Noise - regarding the song 'Paranoimia' with Max Headroom (i hope that music video is a bonus on the DVD)..
Also - could you have screenings at movie theaters (like the Fathom Events) to tie in with the DVD release?

How much does it cost to translate subtitles ?
I understand that including multiple audio tracks could lead to copyright issue, but what about subtitles ?
If you order the translation, there is no copyright issue, right ?
Including subtitles is a unexpensive way to make your set interesting to lots of countries, thus increasing the sale.
Sorry to say, but it's a bit lame, nowadays, to make a set exclusively "American for American".
BTW, as you will include english caption, I hope the bonus will be captioned too. |

Member since: 1/12/2007 | | RE: MAX HEADROOM - the UK Movie and Complete US series request (and a couple of others, as well) | Sadly, as mentioned on a different thread recently, subtitles are definitely not inexpensive. They're actually more expensive than captions, which are already an arm and a leg.
I know it's inconvenient, but it's not really a matter of decision for us to make the DVDs "American for American," as you put it. Warner Bros. would lose a considerable amount of money, if foreign countries were able to buy the set distributed solely for the North American market willy nilly; hence the region coding and lack of foreign language tracks and subtitles. They want someone overseas to do the same thing we did and license the series. And perhaps they will now that it's been done elsewhere.
Doesn't mean you can't get the set from America. But it does mean you simply have to settle with the restrictions placed by the studio.

We've just added a brief video welcome message to the site, featuring none other than Mr. Morgan "Blank Reg" Sheppard and the lovely Ms. Concetta "Dominique" Tomei. We shot this yesterday morning and it HAS to be the most adorable welcome we've had thus far.
If you don't get it the first time you see the welcome message, hit refresh. It's officially in the cycle now.

You can't see the depth. You can't really see an accurate portrayal of the movement or switch. I promise it looks better than this, but it's one of those things you just have to hold to see. Still... Our good friends at TVShowsOnDVD.com have posted the first look at the lenticular cover... http://tvshowsondvd.com/news/Max-Headroom-The-Complete-Series/13697

Unfortunately, I can't really go into detail, as we're still creating them, so it's a little early to tell you exactly what to expect. I can, however, answer a question just posed to me via Twitter.
Sadly, there is zero chance of seeing any scripts as printable PDFs (ala TRANSFORMERS and GI JOE), especially the five unproduced scripts. These were, in fact, donated by someone we've spoken with from the series and they were submitted for approval, but alas, the request was denied for legal reasons. It's not the fault of anyone at Shout or Warner Bros. We just found out that it simply wasn't within WB's legal right to "publish" the material. I'm sure someone somewhere will find a legal use for these. Sadly, it just won't be us.

Speaking of which, the final interview for the set was officially shot in London around 2am my time today. I've received word that it's a good one. With only two weeks before the discs go to plant, this comes not a moment too soon.
Many thanks to everyone involved. I did a "family tree" denoting how I got so many people and it's clear that this cast and crew loved one another dearly. And it shows. You guys are gonna love the set.
But there's plenty still to do. Finalizing menus, which are turning out nicely. Encodes look fantastic. We're heading into the home stretch.

Are you going to include Max's appearance in 80s shows, such as the Terry Wogan Interview or the interview with David Letterman ?
What about the Coke commercials or the "Paranoimia" music video ?
There are so much Max Headroom snippets on Youtube I would like to enjoy in good quality. |

Member since: 1/12/2007 | | RE: MAX HEADROOM - the UK Movie and Complete US series request (and a couple of others, as well) | A lot of thought has gone into what will and won't be in the set.
Unfortunately, some archival materials were pitched and either rejected by the powers that be or weren't available for licensing by their owners. But, ultimately, this turned out to be a good thing. We really sat down, racked our brains and decided against things like the various interviews or the "Paranoimia" music video, because those were more closely related to Max's talk show than the series that aired on ABC. Had we decided to license his talk show, those things would make more sense. But this series had nothing to do with his being a golf-loving celebrity with "swagger," so we decided to--rather than simply include it for the sake of including all things Max Headroom--save material like that for future installments of Max, if the opportunity arises.
Instead, we focused on this series, which truly deserves a great deal of its own attention. Looks like we'll have roughly 2.5 hours of brand-new material alone compiled for your viewing pleasure. The details of which I won't go into here. Yet. Gotta wait for the official press release for that.
The set's packaging has been approved by Warner Bros. and is officially being printed, as I type this. The menus are brilliant. The bonus features are, thankfully, set in stone, though we're still making a handful of minor tweaks. Everything is looking wonderful and coming together nicely.
I absolutely cannot wait to see the final product.

The thing with the talk show and video show is that the are SO many clearance and rights issues. Every song...every celebrity...they all have to be cleared because none of them would've signed a contract allowing home video rights. If the fan base for Max is undeniable after the release of the first set, we could look into it.

Where you aware that he recently appeared in (I think) six BRAND NEW promos for Channel 4's new digital services in the UK? He was on a tv set being pushed around in a shopping cart by a guy from the UK version of The Office. Max had been made up to look very old and decrepit to symbolize how smart and shiny the new digital services are by comparison to his old analogue TV format. Since these are Max's only new speaking appearances for years, it would be great if you could squeeze them into the DVD extras... |

Member since: 1/12/2007 | | RE: MAX HEADROOM - the UK Movie and Complete US series request (and a couple of others, as well) | I was aware and find the "new" (originally produced in 2007, I believe) commercials to be absolutely fantastic. Unfortunately, they won't be included in our set, due to licensing issues. And, again, I think it's almost better that they're not included, as I think they're more directly linked to Max's talk show. But I do love 'em and would definitely love to include them in a future set, should we ever explore and get the rights to a "best of" Max's talk show collection.
As for that "best of" idea, I'm afraid it's the only way a show like that could be done. I don't see any way possible that someone could clear every single piece of music or the music videos themselves. In addition, I'm sure it would be nearly impossible to get everyone who was ever interviewed on the show to sign off on releasing their segments. Television in the '80s was simply a different animal, completely unaware of the future trends of home entertainment. Had they been then, as they are now, this conversation may have been different. But as it stands, shows like this are tough--if not impossible--to release complete series of, because too many x factors have to be properly aligned.
Still, while I can't speak for the powers that be or our acquisitions department, I'd personally love to continue down the path Shout! Factory's already lightly tread upon in Max Headroom-dom. If our first set sells well, who knows what could be around the corner a mere "20 minutes into the future?"

But good news that at least some ideas are on the table for some kind of a release of the talk show! I've only ever seen a handful of horrible quality clips of it, and would love to be able to see at least a few actual episodes.
Cannot wait to get my hands on this set, it's easily my number one favorite show of all time, bar none. (Well, next to all my other number one favorite shows of all time, of course, but it's easily in my Top 3) I'm sure I'm not alone in saying I'll be hyping this up to the m-m-m-MAX! :D

Member since: 1/12/2007 | | RE: MAX HEADROOM - the UK Movie and Complete US series request (and a couple of others, as well) | Yeah, it's KIND OF a shame, but again, it has nothing to do with this TV series. As an extreme example, it would be like listing Indy jumping onto the Nazis' truck as one of your favorite Star Wars moments just because both franchises starred Harrison Ford and were produced by Lucasfilm. You'll learn more about this in the bonus features, but Max was always intended to be a performer--not a character. Max was never really meant to be thought of as Matt Frewer in make-up sitting in front of a blue screen. Max Headroom was created to be a performer that could do it all; dystopian adventure series, talk shows, music, commercials, t-shirts, posters, coffee mugs, golf bags, etc. He was designed to be able to infiltrate all forms of media.
Now, I know you'll just say I'm justifying the decision to not put things like "Paranoimia" or the updated British commercials on the set. But, seriously, when you hear these people talk about him, you really do start to understand that Max was an elaborate "prank", for lack of a better word, created for the purpose of running the world through satire. And when you look at Max as a person and not as a character, you really start to see the differences in the performances. And you start to see how or why something is appropriate as bonus content for one series over another. The music videos and the television interviews and Max performing the ABCs on Sesame Street, etc. are much more appropriate for the talk show than for this scripted weekly adventure series.
Make sense? Or am I just rambling, at this point? By the way, this wasn't aimed specifically at you, Zaranyzerak. It was aimed at the fans, in general.

Pitch a spin-off series to them next time you see 'em. We'll broadcast it from the back of this huge pink bus I just bought.
Brian, I seriously can't thank you enough for making this phenomenal show available to us after so long. It inspired me to get into journalism and continues to remind me how transformative that imaginative and daring TV can be.
Any bonus features you can snag for us are greatly appreciated by this fanboy. I'm thrilled the project is in the hands of someone who gets and cares about the series rather than just getting cranked out by some production house and dumped in bargain bins. Shout! did phenomenal work with "Freaks and Geeks" and I know this Max set will be just as great.
Can't wait until August when I can finally chuck out all those old VHS tapes.

It's always great to hear from someone who was touched and even inspired by a television series. For example, the cast round table some have heard me speak of was moderated by a HUGE fan of this series-- Javier Grillo-Marxuach-- who went on to write and produce Lost for the first couple of seasons and then created his own series, The Middleman. When I told him we were releasing Max Headroom, he flipped with excitement (figuratively) and wanted to be a part of it and I was thrilled to have him on board.

I'm getting the distinct feeling from the "includes all 14 episodes in full" descriptions on the likes of Amazon that it *isn't* on there.
If you can confirm at this point, it'd be very welcome. For me it's a deal-breaker - I grew up in the UK, saw the original TV movie, and to me the US series never quite held up to the standards of the original, perhaps because the movie was a lot darker in tone by comparison.
I'll be plenty happy for all those US Max fans who primarily remember the US TV series that this is coming out, but to be honest, if the pilot isn't included, I'll pass for now, and maybe hope for a release of that in the UK (I live in the US these days). If it *is* included, I'll be in line to buy the full set, even if for me the movie is the real gem and everything else is the bonus.

Doesn't look like there's ANY archival material, only new stuff (which looks great, but there's a WEALTH of archival stuff out there, surely something could have been cleared?). I thought the Channel 4 movie was a lock for this set? What happened? Or is the list of bonus features on the press release incomplete, only highlighting the new stuff?

Member since: 1/12/2007 | | RE: MAX HEADROOM - the UK Movie and Complete US series request (and a couple of others, as well) | C'mon... You, of all people, know how DVD production works. If the movie's not on there, it's for a reason. It's not like we didn't think of it. In fact, no one owns the right to distribute the original film in North America. And it took a long while to even figure out who owns the rights to the movie...period! We finally tracked them down, but could not make a deal satisfactory enough for Warner Bros. to be comfortable with its inclusion prior to the set going to the plant. That being said, we're STILL in talks to acquire this movie, perhaps as a standalone DVD later. It'll ultimately depend on sales of the series. But we're still excited about it.
What other archive material do you perceive as being out there, specifically relating to this series? That removes the Coca-Cola commercials, the music video and the talk show from contention. Oh, and by the way, some of that was actually attempted and specifically denied by the rights holders, as explained earlier.

Good to hear it's still being pursued, though! Not even close to a deal breaker for me, I'm a nut for anything Max (especially the ABC show!), was just disappointed it wasn't there when all this time I was sure it would be. :(
Any idea if there's a film print of the movie out there somewhere for potential Blu-ray release? It seemed like the effects were done on film rather than the usual 80's practice of doing them on SD video.

As for Matt, I'm afraid he declined our many invitations to participate in the bonus materials. Won't begin to speculate as to why. Obviously, since we managed to track down George Stone, who's been virtually reclusive when it comes to Max Headroom over the last 20 years, and Matt's fellow cast, we were very interested in having as many people as possible aboard and were incredibly disappointed when we couldn't include him.

Member since: 5/28/2008 | | RE: MAX HEADROOM - the UK Movie and Complete US series request (and a couple of others, as well) | TWO film prints?? Niiiiice! Well then, sounds like the short-term disappointment at its exclusion could (in theory) be well worth it if we get a snazzy Blu-ray of it in the end! I wasn't planning to ditch my old VHS tape anyway.
And yeah, really sucks about Matt. Wonder why he declined? I mean, Max pretty much MADE his career, so you think he'd have a few things to say about it... Oh well, at least it looks like you got everybody ELSE in spades, I know I can't wait to see the new interviews and roundtable discussion! Love all those guys and gals. Suddenly all the mysterious, cryptic tweets about the extra you weren't able to include and the interviewee you weren't able to get make perfect, saddening sense...
But the main thing to consider, of course, is that MAX FREAKIN' HEADROOM IS COMING OUT ON DVD!!! I mean, this is a series many of us fans had pretty much given up hope of ever seeing on DVD. So the simple fact that it's coming out AT ALL, let alone as a deluxe 5-disc (bitrate must be through the ROOF considering it's only 14 episodes! I APPROVE!) set is cause to celebrate!
Roll on August 10th...now I just have to scrape together 40 bucks...sigh... Why does all the most awesome stuff seem to get released when I'm the most broke? :P

It's too bad about the UK movie & Matt not being included on the extras. I also thought for sure he wouldn't decline. He gave an interview on the Quicksilver Highway DVD I have and briefly mentioned Max Headroom, calling it "that Max Headroom thing"
I was lucky enough to recently receive an amazon.com reward certificate & put it towards this set.

These interviews are absolutely phenomenal. And the roundtable... No doubt one of the highlights of my career.

I've waited over 20 years for a video release of Max Headroom. And I am someone else who was greatly affected by the show. At this point I don't know if it was for good or bad. Max was solely responsible for making me incredibly liberal politically. To me, the show was pretty much borderline socialist. But being liberal in an incredibly conservative country (America) has been very frustrating. That's why I don't know if the effect it has had on me is good or bad. I'll still buy it, though. I still love the show.
It's really weird that Matt Frewer didn't take part in the interviews. Maybe he's the kind of actor who doesn't want to reminisce, I don't know. |

I don't think he's ever done an interview about Max Headroom since the 80's.
Shout Factory knows how to release televsion, now if only they could release Legends Of the HIdden Temple. One can always dream. |

And thanks for stopping by the booth. I love getting a chance to get out there and talk to the folks that are spending their hard-earned money on these titles. It's not until you're happy that I'm happy with the work.

Just got my set before the nightshift at work and am now watching with a sixer of Guinness. Dude, this is freaking brilliant. Thank you so much for giving me back my favorite TV show.
I simply can't believe I'm watching this in a nice clear (non-screen-spammed) version on my big TV.
You have nothing to be ashamed of with this production. The interviews are brilliant. You've done this show right.

I ask because I saw the set without the lenticular cover at Barnes & Nobles. I have it pre ordered from amazon and I believe when I ordered it it said lenticular cover. So does amazon only have the lenticular covers? How can I be sure I get the lenticular cover set?

Since this series was made long before unrated DVD sets and was made in the US, not the UK, I was really surprised to hear that line. I wouldn't think the producers would have submitted a final edit to ABC with a word they knew would be cut out in 1987.
Did the tapes you used to make this set come from a stage in the supply chain prior to network standards and practices?
If so, that's pretty exciting and appropriately subversive.

As for the expletive in "Body Banks," I was a little shocked to hear it, myself. However, we looked into it and it looks like it's a cut they got away with when it first aired. The bootlegs we acquired early on to confirm have it there, as well. One thing to keep in mind, I guess, is that the Brits writing the series weren't accustomed to such limitations and, as you can see in the bonus features, the censors rarely got a chance to review things properly. Subversive, indeed.
Equally subversive is the fact that so many people are reporting product seen in stores so early. Interesting.

I can most definitely second the confirmation that it made it on the air. Only for the very first showing, though. All subsequent showings, including repeats shown on specialty channels that usually permitted cussing, had it snipped out. Overjoyed to hear that it's in the DVD set!

That's actually ideal for me. The thing has always been a bit of a rights beast - the soundtrack, which was composed and performed by Midge Ure and Chris Cross of Ultravox, is virtually the only Ultravox material that's yet to see the light of day on CD, despite all of their albums (which were originally on Chrysalis, same as the Max movie) having been re-released in digitally remastered form. I know some of the people in the Ultravox fan community and know that was sought-after material, so its non-appearance to date suggests that rights are maybe an issue with that too.
Well, best of luck with sales of the DVD box set, and I'll be keeping my eyes open for any possible future release of the movie.
Cheers,
Al

Member since: 8/9/2010 | | RE: MAX HEADROOM - the UK Movie and Complete US series request (and a couple of others, as well) | A quick, incredibly nitpicky question -- so nitpicky that I'll understand if you ignore it...
I noticed upon watching the first episode (GREAT set, by the way) for the first time in forever a detail had been changed... I seem to recall that the original broadcast version reused the computer screen graphics from the original British movie, and when they talked about Level 13, the screens said something like Level 125. In this release, the number 13 (occasionally in an obviously different font) was laid over the building diagrams, and it seemed like some of the other screens were also changed...did you do that, or was it done for some of the re-broadcasts over the years?
I am still kicking myself for not having picked up a (used) copy of the original movie on DVD while I still lived in Japan.
Thanks again for a great slice of my youth on DVD! |

We were told that, while some were kept over, a lot of the graphics were actually redone and/or replaced, due to the nature of greenscreen vs. practical effects. In short, we changed nothing and these were the only masters WB had for the series, so I don't think they did, either.
Thanks for the compliment. Enjoy!

EDIT: Hmm....just watched the first couple of episodes and skimmed the set, one glaring omission I noticed right away: Where's the episode previews? I remember some of them had alternate takes/footage that isn't in the episodes, would have made a nice bonus. Guessing they weren't on the masters? You gotta talk to me more often, man! I totally could've pulled those off my old tapes for ya...
As for everything else, DAMN! I really have to scratch my head about any complaints in audio/video quality. This is the best Max has EVER looked or sounded. Seriously folks, the mixed media used to create this show means it's not going to ever look any better than this! And I think it looks fantastic! Truly a set Max fans can be proud of.
Before I get too dead set into "serious reviewer mode" for my forthcoming video review, allow me this one moment of fanboyishness. Ahem. *takes deep breath*
THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!!!! I HAD LOST ALL HOPE THIS WOULD EVER SEE THE LIGHT OF DAY ON DVD!!!! THANKYOUTHANKYOUTHANKYOUTHANKYOUTHANKYOU!!!! *pant pant pant*
Okay, I'm good now. Seriously, one of my all time favorite shows EVER. It's like visiting an old friend I haven't seen in 15 or more years, the kind you can just pick up and chat with like old times again, as if no time at all has passed. But I'll save the personal anecdotes for the review. Now to turn a critical (albeit overwhelmingly joyful and tear-filled) eye to the rest of the set....

But it wouldn't have mattered. WB doesn't know if they have the rights to break up the episodes into pieces, hence why you won't find licensed clips of the series anywhere. Which is also why you won't find clips from the episodes in the bonus materials. But it definitely would've prevented us from putting the previews on the set as added value.
Looking forward to seeing your review!

Thanks for the clarification, Brian, I'll be sure to mention that. Aaaand....sadly have no clips in my review (I know how sticky WB can be about stuff like that). But I've got a few ideas that I think will make up for that. ;)
REALLY enjoyed the extras, watched the whole batch of 'em in a couple of sittings. Actually learned a few things even I didn't know. I was surprised by how gracefully most of the cast has aged, some of 'em hardly looked a day older! Also loved Steve Roberts' pitch for a revival! Really enjoying the set (as if that isn't obvious). But rest assured, I'll find SOMETHING to be nitpicky about...

http://www.tvshowsondvd.com/articles/holdup.cfm
Obviously after Max Headroom was announced, we removed the entry for it on our FAQ which explained why it wasn't coming out. But here's an excerpt from it, which explained the rights-issues portion of the hold-up that kept the show off the DVD market for so many years:
The show's titular character, played by Matt Frewer, started out as a 1985 telefilm in the UK, Max Headroom: 20 Minutes Into the Future. Following that there was also a mix in the USA and the UK with various productions with names like Max Headroom, The Max Headroom Show, and The Original Max Talking Headroom Show. Some of the material shown in the USA used footage from IL productions. And there have been reports from a few years ago that the UK rights have changed hands from one company to another. So, as you can see, there are lots of rights issues that are split between multiple studios in the UK, and multiple studios in the US, and until those are straightened out, it seems like we'll continuously be hoping that those DVDs are just 20 minutes in the future away.
Maybe that will help you understand where the "licensing mess" came into play. And I think that's just the tip of the iceberg, actually. Brian and the folks at Shout! probably know many more details than I do; I cobbled that together a long while back, from a few industry contacts of mine that did not (and do not) work for any of the involved studios. So if any of it is off, then it's because the people I got the info from were not directly involved. Still, it gets the concept across! :)

I thoroughly enjoyed watching the show again and was very pleased with the extras. It's too bad Matt chose not to participate, but the extensive interviews with the rest of the cast, creators and writers makes up for it. For some reason I thought George Coe was involved in the interviews but I guess not. Thanks again Brian and Shout! and keep up the good work!
Please bring "Starman" the 1986-87 tv series, Silver Spoons seasons 2 & beyond and Jennifer Slept Here to DVD. |

Zaranyzerak, did you actually do a review of Max? Wasn't sure if I'd missed it or not.

He had heard me speak of Max and always wondered what I was talking about. He has thoroughly enjoyed the show and it has become a ritual to watch an episode while we eat supper about every third day. We have been trying to savor the episodes by doling them out over time. We are now down to the final episode. It has been so wonderful being able to share this show with him.
Thanks Shout! for the superb job of licensing and releasing this excellent gem of a tv show.

I'm glad to hear it. I love hearing about new generations being introduced to series like this. Even more so when they're being introduced WITH their parents, rather than simply by their parents.

Sorry for the lack of news.

Member since: 12/29/2011 | | RE: MAX HEADROOM - the UK Movie and Complete US series | | I'm not sure if anyone is still following this thread, but I have a question:
When the series first aired, there were a couple of segments that Max did that came before the commercial breaks. I remember one that talked about the upcoming commercials (in a generic sarcastic manner). I also remember Max's final speech when it was announced that the series was cancelled (mentioning Dallas and Miami Vice in the process). I may be wrong, but I seem to recall a completely random Max segment that was featured in between commercials as well.
What happened to those? Were they not included in the masters or was it a rights issue?
