Just for the heck of it guess whats on Volume 17
ok, its a boring Saturday & started to wonder what Brian has up his sleeve for Volume 17 - he already has 2 titles ready for it. The set will come out in Spring 2010. Dont guess if this causes you great physical pain :)
Here is my guess
108 - The Slime People
502- Hercules
817 - Horror of Party Beach
913 - Quest of the Delta Knights

I took a look at the Rhino Poll - picked 2 from the upper tier that I think Brian can license and a couple from the lower tier and based this on a couple of patterns - we get 2 Joel's & 2 Mike's - and 2 " SyFy" since we havent had any in a while. I think SF can get all of these titles - So far not one Wade Williams Image title has come out which is why I am reluctant to say the Crawling Eye or Season 2, and Im staying away from Season 3 or any major studio release until something amazingly pops up on a set. I expect to be wrong as usual but maybe I am getting closer to getting one right ( I hope )

RE: Just for the heck of it guess whats on Volume 17
Darn it, you beat me to the punch on this.

Oh well, here is my list:

0110 - Robot Holocaust
0323 - The Castle of Fu Manchu
0702 - The Brute Man
0817 - Horror of Party Beach

Similarly, based on the probability list, I took two easy ones and two on the next tier up. But I also took truly some of my favorites. I see we both took 0817. It's my all-time favorite Mike episode, so I want that one the most from my list. I think that since Warrior of the Lost World is MGM, SF may have got their foot in the door with them, so 0110 is possible...and keeps with the Season 1 theme too.

I think it would be a good set. Let's see if either of us hit on anything...

RE: Just for the heck of it guess whats on Volume 17

Holy cow!! The dust hasn't even settled yet on the announcement of XVI's titles, and here we are speculating on XVII already??

This is what I call a great chatroom!

Anyway, since I correctly predicted two of the titles for the next upcoming release (I guessed for both The Corpse Vanishes and NotBB, and also speculated that Santa Claus MIGHT make it due to the timing), I'm feeling alittle confident now; having both scanned Travis' list as well as taken SF's latest bold acquisition of Warrior of the Lost World into play (who among us saw that coming?), I would like to enter my two pennies on what I think will be on Volume 17:

205 Rocket Attack USA - after three straight box sets with a S1 ep, SF will appease the haters of that season with this early classic S2 episode.  This one should have come out a long time ago!

417 Crash of the Moons - I'm really suprised that this hasn't been released yet either; it's better than it's already-released sister episode, Manhunt in Space (413), and we know that the General Hospital shorts are attainable.  One of the better eps of the latter part of S4! (And that's saying something, considering gems like Monster A Go Go, Day the Earth Froze, and Manos were still to come!)

520 Radar Secret Service -  I will grant that this isn't a fave among MSTies, but it seems to be kicking around and just begging to be included in a set.  Plus, The Last Clear Chance is a great short!

913 Quest of the Delta Knights - SyFy era fans rejoice! I seriously think that this underappreciated show will break the CC-era streak that has suprisingly been the trend in these box sets lately.  I do like the CC-era better, granted, but it's time the SyFy era got some love again!

I did have certain titles that I kept going back to, like The Crawling Eye, King Dinosaur, Castle of Fu Manchu, and Attack of the the Eye Creatures (Joel); and Alien in L.A., Outlaw, Girls Town, and Last of the Wild Horses (Mike). But my hunch tells me that these titles, for different reasons, are still out-of-reach for SF.

RE: Just for the heck of it guess whats on Volume 17
I dont think Warrior was obtained from MGM. They got it from another source..
The thing with Season 1 - it does help keep the 2 Joel and 2 Mike episodes going, what with Season 3 still untouchable except for Fu Manchu. I think having Season 1 offers more Joel titles so while they arent well liked, they are Joel ...
I personally dont have any problem with the Season 1 eps. Another thing is that with the sets is that most of the upper tier are Mike episodes, and these sets have a mix of upper and lower tier shows, so why not have Season 1 thrown in with a popular episode. Also, the Joel upper tier episodes are hard to get apparently like Godzilla, Gamera, Season 3 & The Crawling Eye
Is it not better to have all the MST shows on DVD quality no matter what SF picks ?
I also like 205 Rocket Attack USA. There must be some hold up on it. I can see that and Fu Manchu sooner or later on a set blended in with upper tier movies...

RE: Just for the heck of it guess whats on Volume 17
This is a great list, too. And with your previous success, who knows, right?

Rocket Attack, I agree, is overdue for a DVD release. It would be an awesome Joel ep for sure. And Crash of the Moons makes sense since Manhunt in Space was put out already. So that's a definitely possibility. I do love Radar Secret Service. An overlooked ep I think from the Mike catalog despite being one of his first. And Delta Knights is maybe the most underrated ep for Mike. Pearl in the theater? That's just awesome!

I do like this list a lot. Actually of the three lists so far contrived (mine included), I'd be please with any of them truthfully. If you are able to strike lightning again on any of these, I'll be a happy MSTie.

Been a while since Ive been here :)
I enjoy guess work so here is my input for Volume 17
403 City Limits
412 Hercules and the Captive Women
602 Invasion USA
817 Horror of Party Beach
I am in agreement about Horror because a popular episode should be on the set, plus the others are moderately popular & I cant see a 4th set in a row with a Season 1 title  unless they really are targeting them.

RE: Just for the heck of it guess whats on Volume 17

I bassically copied this from the prediction thread for XV. You'll see one of my worst nightmares has been crossed out and replaced due to its release on a previous boxset. Atleast it didn't come out with the other 3.

My Prediction

107 Robot Monster

323 Castle of Fu Manchu

621 Beast of yucca flats

903 Pumaman

What it should be

312 Gamera vs Guiron

418 Attack of the the eye creatures

819 Invasion of the neptune men

911 The screaming skull

My worst nightmare boxset

412 Hurcules and the captive wemon

505 Magic voyage of sinbad. EWWWW

616 Racket Girls  Amazing Transperant Man

909 Gorgo. Although seeing leonard maltin might be nice.

Now there's an interesting topic: what would you consider the worst possible box set of episodes to come out.

I'll grant that any MST episode to make it to commercial DVD release is noteworthy, considering the hurdles SF has to endure to acquire the rights and such, but if you don't prefer certain eps over others, you aren't a MSTie (in my humble opinion).  The "I'm happy with whatever comes out" approach does wear thin after awhile.

Many of the eps I find most tedious have already been released (First Spaceship to Venus, Hamlet, Teenagers From Outer Space), but there are still others:

305 Stranded in Space

403 City Limits

605 Colossus and the Headhunters

802 The Leech Woman

At our current rate, we won't see this until May of next year, but what the hell.

Attack of the the Eye Creatures

The Violent Years

The Deadly Bees

Final Sacrifice

For the extras?  Let's see some of those blockbuster specials, with the short riffs on the bigger films.  I know the don't want to cough up the pilot, but one can always hope.

Probably not going to happen, but that WOULD be a REALLY AWESOME box set!  And I don't use all caps lightly.  3 of my all-time favs: AottEC, The Violent Years (love the Ed Wood!) and Final Sacrifice...  and The Deadly Bees is a really good episode as well.  That would be a damn fine box set!  Here's hoping you are right, rm31d...  even though there is no way this will happen.

We may never see Final Sacrifice as per what Josh said when he approached the owners of the film. No interest in releasing it via MST
Only the Violent Years has the best chance of the 4 that rm31d said...its a nice set, but unlikely at this point..
Maybe a 4th set in a row with a Season 1 title might be overkill. Slime People to me is the last of the easiest to get titles from Season 1 so SF could exhaust it. The other Season 1 released titles must have been easy to get since they are PD. At some point every season will run out of easy to get titles so we might as well just be glad to keep getting the sets as they come. Out of all the seasons with 20+ episodes, Season 5 has gotten the most love. Only 10 episodes left in that season not released...

RE: Just for the heck of it guess whats on Volume 17
Another Season 1 could be overkill, though it all depends on what other episodes are involved in the set. I have no problem with tossing a PD in if there is an ep or two that took a bit more coaxing to make happen.

B Ward has said that they already have two titles locked up for Vol. XVII, which is good news for all of us. We can only guess as to which ones (unless B Ward wants to throw a classic cryptic hint that only alludes to something in the general).

But you are right: of that list, only The Violent Years is on the list of eps that has a good shot of seeing release.

I'm not sure where you got 20 seasons exactly, but Season 5 has been the most released of the seasons. It doesn't bother me at all, but it would be nice to get some love for a few of the other seasons. There are a few good Season 8 titles left that should be possible. Season 4 and 6 have some as well. And Season 3 is the most sparingly released (though there are reasons why that's the case).

Like you said, though, there will come a point where we hit the wall with episodes, so I agree we should enjoy any new releases.

I love Puma Man, and would love to see that one on DVD, but...  B.Ward I think mentioned that they can't pin down (or find) the actual license holders of that episode.  In fact, he even asked for help to track them down.  Sad...  Luckily, I have a pristine recorded copy of that episode.

I would love to see more Season 1, but it looks like Shout Factory may have come to the end of the line with the release of Corpse Vanishes.  As stated, maybe Slime People is a possibility, but the really great Season 1 episodes (Untamed Youth, The Black Scorpion, Robot Monster) will probably never see the light of day.

I've never guessed before, because I'm not too familiar with the licensing stuff and what-not, but I'll give it a go:
108 - The Slime People
415 - The Beatniks
602 - Invasion USA
704 - The Incredible Melting Man

This would also be a pretty nice set in my eyes.  Not a great set, but a really good one.  415 and 705 are two favorites and 108 and 602 are very solid episodes.

415- Beatniks(the movie is PUBLIC DOMAIN, and can be freely viewed/downloaded on archive.org)

418- Attack of the the Eye creatures(also PUBLIC DOMAIN, or at least he B&W version is... maybe you could do a color to non-color switcheroo)

621- Beast of Yucca Flats(again, public domain! Plus it would complete the Coleman Francis trilogy!)

813- Jack Frost

According to Travis' list, 418 and 621 are not PD. They are actually listed as "not likely." However, I speak for everyone by saying that I'd love it if you were correct and they were PD.

The other two, however, are very likely to make a boxset down the line.

Contrary to what travis list says all for should be marked as likely. The mst3k community relies to heavily on travis's list. He's wrong about a lot of things. Beast of yucca flats has been released by nuemerous public domain companies and eye creatures has been released by retromedia. Guess what guy's that list is nice guide but don't assume because he says Unlikely its automatically not coming out.

Very true...Attack of the The Eye Creatures might be public domain since Retromedia put it out
Beast of Yucca Flats is PD but was also a Wade Williams Image DVD - not a single Wade Williams title has made it to MST3K sets..yet (unless 1st Spaceship on Venus was one)
Same for Robot Monster, Crawling Eye, Rocketship XM...PD yes, but a Wade Williams title...

It's a great list of titles. I'd be thrilled with that set for sure.

The Wade Williams ones have been elusive. Could be something going on there...

I wasn't suggesting that the Travis list was the end-all source on what episodes are possible - just throwing a counterpoint out there. I truly hope that Adam is right - may very well be. All the info seems accurate (nice job doing the research Adam, btw).

But Travis has been pretty accurate on a number of the titles, so I agree that it is a good guide and starting point. We will just have to see what happens.

I respect Travis' list but in all due respect it is not 100% accurate and most of the titles have possible next to it...However, almost anyone can create a list that says "possible" next to it in terms of being released. Heck all titles can be possible..but I am glad he puts a possible/not likely or likely next to it just to show the way he leans...
Id make all the Gamera ones not likely until one is released, same with Wade Williams..are they possible, sure they all are, but in reality, not likely..Id say everything from Season 3 except for Fu Manchu is not likely until something gets put out. Anything from Universal (Season 8, Kitten with a Whip, etc) to me are all not likely until something gets released....
Quite honestly I think Rhino or Shout would have released some of those titles by now if they could. They are popular and requested titles, so dont you think by now if SF could get them , they would ? The fact is they cant get them at this point, and sooner or later we will be down to Season 3 and Season 8 (eps 801-809) titles ( and a few not likely titles from other seasons)  - this is when Volume release times will slow down. This is another reason why I am glad Season 1 is available - that many more episodes from the Joel years & that many more shows to get on DVD ..

RE: Just for the heck of it guess whats on Volume 17

You're right. I personally enjoy most of the Season 1 shows. Granted, they aren't quite what the later seasons are. Even the crew said that the full concept wasn't in place totally until Season 2. But Season 1 is what started it all, and there's still a ton to enjoy with them.

As far as why those titles (Season 3 and 8 ones particularly) haven't been released, it's because they are highly unlikely to be put out at all. That's not to say they won't ever. It may take SF a while to convince Universal or some of the Season 3 owners to let us enjoy some of these episodes. It may be that the licensing is too expensive, or the licensing rights aren't up for grabs from the owners.

But I think all of us realize, somewhere along the way, things will come to a halt with the episodes that we can get. It makes each boxset that much more exciting when they come out.

As much as I love 415 The Beatniks, I don't think it's too popular; I recall that CC played the hell out of it, probably because it was PD and the network didn't have to pay any further fees to keep it in the rotation.  (The Giant Gila Monster was also another title that was played repeatedly, and soon got to be disliked by fans for this reason).

Still, there's a good chance that it will find its way to a box set in the near future.
