The Trimming Of The Secret Policeman's Balls?

I'm just finally getting around to watching The Secret Policeman's Balls DVD boxset, which I am enjoying immensely. However, I was a little surprised to read about current festival screenings of the "original UK theatrical releases" of the "Ball" and "Other Ball" that supposedly have about 30 combined minutes of footage deleted from the DVD versions.

So I have a two-part question: Why was the material cut and what does the material consist of?

Well, from watching the documentary included on the box set, it's clear that at least Billy Connelly's performances were deleted.
