Haven't watched this show in years. Why the legal problems?

I do have the 1966 movie though.

Supposedly, it's not as simple a case of Warners owning the character, Fox the series, but also the fact that estate of the late producer of Batman, William Dozier had some legal actions against Fox that had to be settled, and supposedly Batman presents problems based on the contracts related to other things that might even prevent it from being released in a truly uncut format even if the other legal matters are settled.     This is one title where I had to just settle for the best quality off-air version there's been (TV Land Canada) and live with it.

I wouldn't buy it now if it came out. I'm quite content with the 16mm prints I transferred over years ago. Complete and nice color.

I wait with baited bat-breath for the release of the series on DVD, mastered from the original negatives as the 1966 movie has been. Surely Fox can get the legal clearances if they try hard enough - - or just sell it all to DC/Warner. There is a vast new audience for this one...

Read this post (starting a few paragraphs down) and you will know what a rights hell the tv series truly is (and why it wasn't so for the movie.)

GREAT NEWS! No, not a DVD, but the next best thing. Batman is coming back to TV! Starting on October 10, the Discovery Kids channel becomes The Hub network. It was just announced yesterday that the channel has acquired Batman!. It will air at 11:30 starting Monday night, the 11. They say if you already have Discovery Kids, then you will get this channel. Not sure if you don't have DK.

What me, Nailwraps, has to say: But since Shout! has ties with WB and Fox, there's no doubt that Shout! can release the show.

Oh, there's plenty of doubt there!  Our relationships with WB and Fox in no way gives us the upper hand, when it comes to a series like Batman, sadly.  After all, it's Batman.

Batman is the great white whale of TV on DVD.

If the companies and parties involved couldn't find a way to get it out by now, odds keep going down that it will ever come out.

There have been plenty of good marketing tie-in opportunities since TV on DVD became mainstream. And, as was posted in a huge write-up over at TVShowsonDVD, It isn't just Fox and WB not wanting to play nice with each other... it's even more complicated than that.

I mean, they found a way to play nice when the Watchmen rights were in doubt ($$$). But from the looks of things, Batman is more complicated than throwing money at it.

And that sucks.

Nah, it'll get released.  And, personally, I think it'll be sooner than most of us think, but only because we're not expecting it.  What I wouldn't expect is for Shout! to be the Ahab that lands that white whale.  I think it'll take more than just a licensing deal.  I think someone's ultimately going to have to buy those rights.  Now, we'll just see which studio or label it is.

Just my thoughts.
