Zaranyzerak I know you don't like this point of view, but there's no denying that it is a legitimate turnoff to plunge into a series with NO idea if your support is enough to get subsequent seasons/volumes released.
Look at how Lionsgate is running on fumes, absolutely puttering to the finish line with a last gasp effort on trying to finish the original T.M.N.T. series. The only series that has been more mismanaged is the 2003 Turtle series by 4Kids/Funimation. Heck Lionsgate only needs to make a 7 episode DVD for Season 10 (the other half of the season 10 episodes that weren't on the season 1 disk, and the 3 lost episodes). Both companies however have, in my opinion, ruined any kind future trust in the Turtle community short of a full release box set (especially fans of the 2003 series who have been burned twice). Whatever teams were in charge at both Lionsgate and 4Kids/Funimation should have been fired. I certainly won't buy any future volume/season box sets without some sort of assurance that the company is in it for the long haul, even willing to take some lumps here and there in sales. I honestly can't see anything short of a full boxset gaining trust back though to be honest.
That kind of mentality can build up in a fan communities, and most 80s shows have a LOT of cross community support (rarely are fans of Thundercats, strictly Thundercats fans. They're also likely fans of Silverhawks, MOTU, Bravestarr, T.M.N.T. Jayce, M.A.S.K. etc). As much as people say not supporting initial volumes of a show contributes to DVD sets not being complete, the anonymity from the company releasing them plays a big part, if not 50%. Fans have NO knowledge of how sales are because companies won't release them. Fans have NO idea how many more units need to be purchased to get the company to consider the next season/volume. Fans have NO idea what the timeline is for sales to be considered successful or a failure (moving 20,000 units over 3 months is a success, but what about 3 years? Probably not and the thought of that company releasing the next volume has been long gone. What's the cutoff time?). Why do companies (not just Shout! but ANY DVD company) flat out refuse to release any sales numbers of DVDs? What legal reason or company inside information would be so damaging in getting this information to the fans so they know what kind of realistic chance there is of seeing their show completed? (3500 units that still need to be sold. Ok it probably is time to give up, move on, and not waste time trying to promote it until someone else tries to pick it up. 350 units? Hey we've got a real chance to make this happen). The point is, fans can't know if the cause is lost or not, and nobody wants to sink time and effort into a lost cause. DVD companies that refuse to release this information have to bear a significant amount of the blame because of this policy.
Point is, there's too many unknowns for fans that have been burned a few times to consider plunging in on future shows. I guess the above was a high level way of saying that fans of Inspector Gadget, C.O.P.S. and Jayce are going to be extremely hard to convince to buy into future volumed releases from Shout!
For me Shout! is still in good standing and I speak highly of their G.I. Joe Footlocker and Transformer MoL sets. I'm REALLY stoked they FINALLY took a full release approach of a 65 episode property in M.A.S.K. (10 episode racing series aside). I'm hoping M.A.S.K. full season sets fly out of the warehouse to support my theory that full box set releases, at least for shows with under 100 episodes, absolutely make financial sense.
That's my hope anyways...
Now back to your original post. How confident are you that there's still a cause left to help? This goes back to the timing issue earlier. Even if sales do increase because of this, how confident are you that it isn't too late to get volume 2 released? Not being sarcastic, I want your honest opinion as I highly respect your knowledge in this area.
Another important question I wanted to ask you is, what are ways we can help the following causes (i.e. get Shout's attention and show them that there's enough support to get them on DVD)??
* Inhumanoids
* Visionaries
* Dino-Riders
* 2003 TMNT - would be a tough sell short of a full commitment in a Shout newsletter to the full release, that or a full box set
* Others but the above are my personal short list.
The good news is, the number of 80s shows that have never been fully released in Region 1 are shrinking by the year. I can think back to 2005 right before Thundercats was released. I think only Transformers had seen a full release by then or was well on its way. Since then we've gotten MOTU, Bravestarr, Voltron, Thundercats, Ghostbusters (both Real and Filmation), G.I. Joe, Galaxy Rangers, the A-Team, Go-Bots and M.A.S.K. are coming, and Silverhawks, C.O.P.S., Jayce & Inhumanoids have been partially released. Shout deserves some credit up there for those and I applaud them.
Again, I'm actually interested in any ideas you have outside of posting here. Any suggestions we in the Shout community can follow to get recognition for those and other shows please post a response here or a thread dedicated to it. Thanks for your effort in your C.O.P.S. and Jayce causes.

P.S. - I know you and I both share a passion for Inhumanoids. If you're interested James Rolfe (better known as the Angry Video Game Nerd) did a nice introspective on it just recently (within the last week) on Cinemassacre, that actually showed up on Spike.com. Maybe a partnership between them? I dunno, but if you haven't seen it check it out here.

I'm sure most fans would have no problem with bare bones sets as long as they could get the whole series at once and at a decent price. |

This is one of the best animated tv series of the 80s and is not finished in English? Do I really have to learn French to buy the complete boxset in that language? :( |
