Member since: 6/18/2009 | | Betty Boop/Fleischers? | | In a similar fashion to Burt's post about Terrytoons, I was wondering if Shout! Factory would be interested in releasing restored Betty Boop and Fleischer cartoons from the 1930s. I know that many, many people would love to see these classics! |

(Anyone who has had to choose, in recent years, between one Public Domain Boop DVD set or another, would no doubt understand that most of the post-Code Boop shorts, excepting a handful generally believed to be lost, remain out there for the plentiful picking. Those were the ones with Pudgy the pup, Grampy, and so on.) |

The package includes Betty, the first couple of shorts featuring Casper the Friendly Ghost and Baby Huey, several Little Lulu shorts and puppet shorts made by George Pal and Ray Harryhousen.
Lionsgate's usage of the Republic catalog all this time has thus far been limited to stuff like It's a Wonderful Life and various John Wayne films. It's probable that they don't even know that they hold video rights to these cartoons.
I would love to see Shout Factory put together a DVD release of these cartoons, because of the fine work Shout has done on the cartoons it has licensed (both modern and classic), and because it'll be a frigid day in Hades before Lionsgate releases a cartoon on DVD that ISN'T Clifford the Big Red Dog, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles or Speed Racer. |

Member since: 6/19/2009 | | RE: Betty Boop/Fleischers? | For any Shout! staffers reading this—the Republic catalog includes not just the branded Betty Boop cartoons (1932-39), but the Talkartoons (1929-32) and Screen Songs (1929-38) series as well, which contain numerous Betty appearances from before she got her formal series. The badly transferred, DMVR-ridden 1996 "Betty Boop: Definitive Collection" VHS set tried to include every cartoon with Betty in a major role, but missed a few Talkartoons (Accordion Joe, 1930; Teacher's Pests, 1931) and quite a number of Screen Songs.
As to the four 1938 Betty titles long believed missing—Honest Love and True and Buzzy Boop at the Concert seem to remain missing, but the original Buzzy Boop and Pudgy and the Lost Kitten have both been found. Various private collectors could lead Shout! to the materials.
The Talkartoons without Betty (about twenty) also include numerous appearances by Bimbo and Koko the Clown. From my perspective it would be a shame to leave these out of a new Betty collection, not least because apart from being hilarious, some are extremely rare—apart from the Republic master elements (some of which are stored at UCLA), I know no other source for a few of them, and there are a good handful I've never seen.
The later Koko the Clown solo cartoons ("Inkwell Imps," 1927-29) are also in the Republic catalog. Republic themselves put out a VHS tape in the late 1980s, but it didn't have everything and didn't bother with any music scores for the silent films; they just ran silently. Shout! could easily do much better than that.
The Little Lulu cartoons in the Republic package are actually the entire 1940s series, some 26 shorts in all.
The Republic package also contains Technicolor elements on the Fleischer Color Classics—the Silly Symphony-like series that has only ever been collected in the PD "Somewhere in Dreamland" DVD set. As a public domain production, that set had no choice but to use faded and even black and white copies of some color cartoons—they were stuck with whatever was available without sourcing the Republic masters. Its creators would have liked to produce an authorized set, but Lionsgate wasn't interested... |

I think it would be cool to go with a Betty Boop and Friends type of package.
The Talkartoons (which Betty made her debut in) should be included.
Swing You Sinners is a masterpiece of surrealism. |

Hey Steve
Member since: 6/19/2009 | | RE: Betty Boop/Fleischers? | | Betty Boop merchandise is still selling today, so how about a DVD set of Betty Boop theatrical cartoons? It is about time I get an opportunity to replace my "Definitive Collection" VHS set with an authorized release on DVD without the DVNR |

Some documentairies and the remaining non-Betty talkartoons as bonus tracks. And of course this means we start with the pre-code cartoons since it is done chronologically. |

I'd recdomend Jerry Beck of http://www.cartoonresearch.com/ - he's been behind the programming
of many cartoons sets such as the Looney Tunes Golden Collection among others.
Ray_Pointer is also a font of knowledge when it comes to the Fleischer Studio. |

The Little Lulus would be great too. |

Member since: 6/18/2009 | | RE: Betty Boop/Fleischers? | I remember the first time I saw a Fleischer cartoon. I was eight-or-so, at an underground cartoon festival. The programmer played "Betty Boop Bamboo Isle". The awesome weirdness in that cartoon had me thinking for weeks.
Just take a look at this amazing short:
http://youtube.com/watch?v=4GYV5i-OaDE
The only problem is that no one has ever seen this short in good quality since 1932, the year it was made. The first time I saw this short was on a badly scratched, splicey film print. The next time I saw this short was on the 1996 Definitive Collection VHS set, badly riddled with DVNR. Now, when I want to see it today, I'm at the mercy of YouTube's extremely poor, choppy quality. (The version I posted here has the best quality I could find on YouTube, and that's still not saying much.)
I mentioned DVNR earlier in this post. Here are three articles that explain what DVNR is, and why it should be kept far, far away from classic animation. All articles are written by notable, reputable animation historians.

http://www.cartoonbrew.com/classic/droopy-on-dvd-uncut-and-dvnrd.html

So please, Shout! Factory, if we ever get a Betty Boop DVD, remember not to include DVNR as part of the restoration process. |

Yeah, DVNR is a reoccuring problem on cartoon releases.
Something to be aware of. |
