Member since: 6/18/2009 | | Shout Factory + Terrytoons = A whole new era for classic cartoon lovers! How about it? | Yep ... I'm talking about Mighty Mouse, Heckle & Jeckle, Farmer Alfalfa, Gandy Goose, Dimwit, Deputy Dawg, Beefy the steer, Clint Clobber, and all the rest of that sadly neglected cartoon universe.
("Beefy the steer?" did someone mutter? Yes, Beefy too was very briefly a Terrytoons headline player.)
And, possibly excepting Mighty Mouse, all trapped in multi-corporate limbo somewhere among CBS, Viacom, Lionsgate, and/or who-knows-how-many-other companies that have no idea what to do with the Terrytoons library!
Now, could Shout Factory conceivably wade into that field of thickets, whack 'em away, and give us real bells-and-whistles Terrytoons DVD collections along the lines of those created for Looney Tunes and Popeye in recent years?
Let's hear from more Terrytoons-loving folks who will gladly campaign to make that happen! And I'll see you at the front of the line. |

great idea. Count me in. Love to replace my burned dvd with Heckle & Jeckle with a luxury box with bonus documentaries. |

Cartoons I want to see on a proper DVD:
When Mousehood Was In Flower
Power Of Thought
Krakatoa
Gypsy Life
Farmer Alfalfa's Ape Girl
I'll list more later.
Is Shout! Factory up to the task?
I hope so! |

Of course, the most commercial route would be to feature Mighty Mouse and/or Heckle & Jeckle, but I do hope that any set would include a generous helping of the many, many other cartoons produced by this studio.
Terrytoons were in production for a long, long time and their contribution to the field of the Hollywood cartoon deserves to be preserved. |

Member since: 6/18/2009 | | RE: Shout Factory + Terrytoons = A whole new era for classic cartoon lovers! How about it? | Adding to FleischerFan's previous post just for completeness' sake: That long run of Terrytoons production resulted in (a) roughly 1,000 theatrical color cartoons released from 1938 through 1968, plus (b) a steady schedule of black-and-white shorts from 1930 through 1942, and (c) a few more years' worth of made-for-TV cartoons from the 1960s later cherry-picked and released to theatres, from 1968 into the early 1970s.
As well as (d) whatever copies survive of the numerous network and syndicated TV half-hours that incorporated all three varieties of Terrytoons; these were produced from the mid-1950s until the mid- to late 1960s.
Y' think there's enough of a foundation there for at least one satisfying DVD retrospective? It's seriously to be hoped. ;)

I'd recdomend Jerry Beck of http://www.cartoonresearch.com/ - he's been behind the programming
of many cartoons sets such as the Looney Tunes Golden Collection among others. |

From my perspective, then, Heckle and Jeckle are the best known of the other characters, so ought to be the flagship stars of a set that contains some of everything else as well. |

Member since: 7/31/2009 | | RE: Shout Factory + Terrytoons = A whole new era for classic cartoon lovers! How about it? | | I am a big Terrytoons fan (I have 12 two-hour VHS tapes full that I recorded from cable back in the 1980s and 1990s, mostly off of WGN in Chicago) and would gladly shell out the bucks for official DVD releases. Especially Heckle and Jeckle. I like Mighty Mouse alright too, but I really think many of their best cartoons are the lesser-known ones with no "stars" like Catnip Capers (one of my faves), The Two-Headed Giant, and some of the Gandy Goose shorts. Please, please, please put these out, I'll buy every volume that is released. |
