I'm awaiting feedback from other TV classic fans. This show is so unique and needs to be seen and appreciated. This is not a "soap" with dueling divas throwing each other in the pool. This show has solid actors and real acting. I would say the only modern seriallized show that has matched this kind of writing quality is Gilmore Girls.
Read the following rave reviews from DVD Talk. This reviewer really explains the phenomenon of the show.

Great cinematography, music, and acting, especially noteworthy for a show that never had reruns and was, depending on the season, 1 hour a week or 1 and 1/2 hour of week of air time.
I had never watched the show during the first season, but then the summer of '65, my older girl cousins wanted to stay out on the boardwalk at the beach where we were all vacationing. I was younger and had an earlier curfew and they insisted that I watch each episode and fill them in upon their return. Rodney Harrington [Ryan O'Neill] was on trial for murder. Well I was hooked from then on. :-)
If you feel hesitant about purchase, try it out by renting from Netflix. I guarantee you will fall in love with the characters of Peyton Place!
