I have had it with buying shows on DVD and then getting hacked up episodes. I would rather NOT have had Rhoda than to buy that terrible collection. I no longer sit back and take it. I returned Rhoda to Amazon and they gave me a full refund. I also returned my first season of Father Knows Best because the episodes were cut. Amazon is really good about taking back merchandise that is not what you expected it to be. At least with Rhoda there was something on the box about it being the cut episodes. However, I did not see it until it was too late. If these episodes are going to be edited episodes, I hope that Shout Factory would let us know in advance so we don't get our hopes up. |

I recently recorded the uncut episodes from digital cable TV on to VHS-SP, then transferred the taped episodes on to 26 DVD's. The shows look great, it is basically 10 out of 10 quality. I also have the rare pilot episode and the reunion movie Still Rockin In Brooklyn Heights. Will be interesting though to find out if the episodes issued via Shout Factory will also be the uncut versions.
Season three is my favorite, but each season contains good episodes.
I have seen two different versions of the 1st season episode House Guest. There is an older version, and the newer restored version that is currently aired on TV. Both versions contain scenes that the other version does not have. The new one is the better version, I imagine this is the version that will be placed on the DVD from Shout Factory.

Member since: 6/1/2008 | | RE: The Patty Duke Show - LET US KNOW IF THESE ARE UNCUT! | I'm not worried about the shows being edited since the shows have been shown recently uncut. At Nick At Nite, at the first couple runs of TPDS they were shown at 24 minutes (with a little over 1 minute cut). The shows I have taped are mostly from these runs. After those 2 runs, they NIN cut their shows down to 22 minutes.
When Nick at Nite and TV Land did a retrospective a few years ago, showing episodes of shows they used to show. The Patty Duke show episode shown was cut to 22 minutes but with different edits than they used to have on NIN.
Also, some know about the 8 episodes released on laserdisc that are uncut.
So, I know the uncut versions are out there.
I have my fingers cross that the sales will be good enough to roll out all three seasons in fairly short order.

You are incorrect, uncut episodes of Patty Duke are airing currently on cable TV. I recorded all the episodes, I have all three seasons uncut in superb quality. I like the third season best, there is less of Cathy and more of Ross. This is a good thing because Patty and Ross are always funny together, Cathy is my least favorite character. Two of the best season three Patty/Ross episodes are the spy episode Girl From NEPHEW and the episode Ross Runs Away, But Not Far where Patty and Ross are accidentally handcuffed together. Another great one from the third season is Partying Is Such Sweet Sorrow, which featues the classic song Funny Little Butterflies. Do You Trust Your Daughter is another great season three episode, an unusually serious episode which contains a tender scene with Patty and William Schallert. Season three does have a few weaker episodes, Our Daughter The Artist and The Invisible Boy are a couple examples. But overall, season three is the best, followed by season one, then season two.

As for the episodes being uncut, you're not going to get any better than the DVD release. From what I've seen on THIS TV they sometimes shave bits and pieces of the show around the commercial breaks.

This way, I have the series in both formats, VHS & DVD. Transferring from VHS-SP to DVD, there is no reduction in quality whatsoever, the episodes retain the same high quality from the actual telecast. |

Member since: 6/1/2008 | | RE: The Patty Duke Show - LET US KNOW IF THESE ARE UNCUT! | There is a quality loss in resolution from broadcast to VHS tape. VHS is only 250 lines of resolution compared the usual roundabout 400 of broadcast (it can vary) and 480 of DVD (the technical limit of NTSC lines of resolution is 525) . VHS also has color loss and distortion (which doesn't apply to PD, of course).

It's a 26 disc set, 105 episodes including the uncut pilot which I have from another source. I also have the reunion movie Still Rockin In Brooklyn Heights. The episodes look great, recording the shows on VHS-SP was the way to go as there is no loss of quality from the actual telecast. I won't need the DVD's from Shout, will be interesting though to see if they will issue all three seasons. Shout needs to release season two of The Bill Cosby Show, it's a travesty they haven't issued it yet. |

I am hoping that SHOUT will release the rest of Bill Cosby too.
Patty Duke has a better chance of being completed, just like That Girl was.
Still, it's a good thing most of my favorite episodes are in the first season (I have faves in the next 2 seasons too, but season one is my favorite). |

Patty Duke Show has good episodes in each season, my personal favorite is season three. I like the changes they made for that season, there are some really great episodes like Partying Is Such Sweet Sorrow, Girl From NEPHEW, Ross Runs Away, Do You Trust Your Daughter, etc. |

DVD (according to how they are made and how good the transfer is) can look great, but never as good as a true HD source.
I like those third season shows but in the first season you get gems like Double Date, The President, The Actress and more. Can't wait! |

Just because they aired complete on cable, that's a completely different deal than home video, which has to be negotiated. So, don't assume anything.
As for recording first to VHS, in this day and age, that makes no sense whatsoever. I haven't recorded to VHS in 7 years. Just go right to the hard drive on the DVD recorder and then burn it to disc. Much better quality.

I'm just glad I already have the complete series uncut as I recently recorded all the episodes from digital broadcast TV. Masters are on VHS-SP, then transferred to DVD. Quality is superb and I like having the episodes in both formats, tape and disc. Those who complain about VHS are the same people who will complain about DVD when something comes along to succeed that format. VHS is perfectly adequate as long as you record everything on SP, use high quality tapes and have good equipment for DVD transfer. |

I've transferred professional grade VHS tapes at SP to DVD and there is a slight loss of quality, but not noticeable unless shown on a large screen. VHS to DVD equals second generation as well as compression. I would transfer to digital tape before I would transfer to VHS.
As was said, it's better than nothing. |

Except for one. The one in question is "How to be Popular", which runs 24:30. Although it was the 12th episode aired, How To Be Popular was actually the first episode filmed after the pilot. So the shorter running time might have something to do with that. |

If you (and enough others like you) wait for the complete series to be released and don't buy the first volume, there's a fair chance the subsequent seasons won't be released, due to a general lack of perceived interest. Of course lecagr doesn't seem particularly interested in purchasing the sets, so I may only be preaching to the choir.

Member since: 4/23/2008 | | RE: The Patty Duke Show - LET US KNOW IF THESE ARE UNCUT! | I bought season one of The Bill Cosby Show, then season two never came along. So now before I buy a favorite show on DVD, I'll wait to see if the whole series gets released before I spend any money on it. I don't want to have one season of a show, then the rest of the series is left unissued. I don't know how many DVD sets of The Bill Cosby Show season one have sold, but regardless it's really a shame that apparently Shout cannot see it through and finish off a two season show. Regarding the Patty Duke Show, I'm fortunate that all the episodes were aired uncut in my area and I was able to record them. Otherwise I would buy the DVD's, but I'd still wait for all three seasons to be out before I made a purchase.

As surreal as it is to say, I have to agree with the fictional character's sentiment.

And with the purchase of those first two volumes, you only help yourself in insuring that the remaining volume be released.
The Bill Cosby Show was a different animal--which still hasn't been abandoned, by the way--, in that, it was a little-remembered series. We were hoping the name "Bill Cosby" would mean more to people who'd never seen it. Since it aired only during its original run and then once in local syndication in a few markets, it was a show that was unfamiliar to many people, unlike The Patty Duke Show, which has run in syndication consistently for the past couple decades. Patty and Cathy Lane easily have more cachet than Chet Kincaid.

I'm quite satisfied with my Patty Duke Show collection, put a lot of work into recording the uncut episodes and putting them on DVD's. Quality is superb. But I hope season one sells well for you guys so you can issue the other seasons. A retail DVD release of Patty Duke has been a long time coming.
That's good if The Bill Cosby Show is still on the table. Would be great if the folks at Shout can get season two out there and make the Chet Kincaid fans happy. Is it possible season two might come out in 2010?

EDIT: Sorry, but for some reason, it was removed from Hulu. |

Member since: 4/23/2008 | | RE: The Patty Duke Show - LET US KNOW IF THESE ARE UNCUT! | | I am aware of the Bill Cosby Show episodes being up on Hulu, then they were mysteriously removed. I do have all 52 episodes of the series, but unlike my Patty Duke's the quality of the Bill Cosby's isn't as good. So I've been patiently waiting for Shout to issue the 2nd season in order to have all the episodes in pristine quality. |
