The Chucklewood Critters

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chucklewood_Critters <- info on the show

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1H5qINifkD8 <- intro to the cartoon

The Chucklewood Critters is a highly underappreciated and overlooked cartoon of the '90s

but like The Raccoons, It started as a series of TV specials all the way back to 1983

There was a DVD set of the specials and the TV show but as of now it was discontinued by it's publisher (Platinum Disc) and probably out-of-print

so i suggest that Shout! Factory give The Chucklewood Critters the red carpet treatment

make a set for the specials that came before the 2 season tv show

- The Christmas Tree Train (1983)

- Which Witch is Which? (1984)

- The Turkey Caper (1985)

- A Chucklewood Easter (1986)

- The Adventure Machine (1991)

- What's Up Mom? (1992)

- Honeybunch (1992)

- 'Twas the Day Before Christmas (1993)

- School Daze (1994)

not to mention season sets of both seasons of The Chucklewood Critters tv series (seeing that both seasons are 13 episodes each, i'm guessing 2 discs a set would be accurate)

as for special features: an interview with the creators (Bill Hutten and Tony Love) would be nice

now for a question your gonna ask, how to market an 'obscure' cartoon to a new generation of kids who are attracted to emo vampires and ADD ninjas (refering to Twilight and Naruto)?

Step 1: Online advertising, show off full-length episodes of the cartoon on your YouTube channel and post a commercial to promote the DVDs

Step 2: for those who are young at heart like i, It wouldn't hurt to bundle the dvds with plushies of Buttons and Rusty as an added bonus to make the DVDs worth the price*

*Step 3: a fair price for the DVDs: at these economical times, low prices are a given. thus i propose $20 for the DVD sets of the specials and the season sets of the cartoon show and $23 for the DVD/Plush bundle

RE: The Chucklewood Critters
This was released on DVD over the course of 2004-2005, the complete series and all the specials.  It's currently out of print, but if you check amazon there are plenty of sellers offering all 4 volumes for pretty reasonable prices.

Um, dude

The out-of-print status of the Platinum Disc Chucklewood Critters DVDs is the reason why Shout! Factory must take that opportunity to bring the show AND the specials back on DVD, remastered from the masters and more!

RE: The Chucklewood Critters
A significant part of it is profitability, though.  Do you have any information as to WHY those release went out of print so quickly?  If it was due to low sales or lack of interest, then I highly doubt Shout would pursue it as a potential property.  My point in mentioning the old release was to point out that the show IS available, and not that long ago.  If you would want such a release to be successful, it would make better marketing sense to WAIT a while until the old volumes become scarce, thus helping to heighten the anticipation and demand for such a release.

As for remastering, bear in mind that better masters may not exist, so a re-release may not be of significantly better quality.  Such is the case with most cartoons from the 80's and 90's.  While the initial animation was shot on film, the episodes themselves were edited, mastered and post-processed on SD video.  Which is why many such shows don't get the deluxe remastering treatment - there's only so much you can do with a video source vs. what you can do with a film source in terms of bumping up the quality of the transfer.

RE: The Chucklewood Critters

two theories in mind of WHY the Chucklewood Critters DVD sets are Out of Print is probably due to the publisher (Platinum Disc) probably went out of business or probably due to piss poor marketing

Shout! Factory is a company that releases stuff that's risky to release on DVD like the complete series on both Batfink and The Milton the Monster Show so they are perfect for re-releasing The Chucklewood Critters into the DVD market. Seeing that the company is getting an awesome reputation, I think Shout! Factory should ramp up the advertising and publicity to bring people's interest into The Chucklewood Critters even the cartoon entusiests (ie people who read Cartoon Brew)

All it takes is to make the creators of the series (Bill Hutten and Tony Love) involved in making the DVD sets the best it can be from the restoration of the masters of both the specials and the series itself to the special features [hopefully, nothing cheap like trailers for other releases in the Shout! Factory catalog (ala FUNimation)]

and as i stated in the OP, with the sad state of the economy low prices are a given. hence a reasonable MSRP is in order maybe $20.00 would be nice and to seal the deal very nicely, adding plushies of Buttons and Rusty to bundle with the DVDs would do just dandy.

sure, not all DVDs of cartoons are perfect. look at the Popeye DVD sets from Warner Bros., We're getting them they way they were intended without any turmoil from Soccermoms and the P.C. police and yet purists in the animation fanbase still ain't pleased because of tiny nitpicks here and there

The cartoon series (made here in the United States) maybe obscure to most folk, that's probably because during it's lifespan from the specials from 1983 to 1994 to the 2 season (1997-1998) series that hardly anyone outside a minimal group of people gave it a change just like another cartoon that originated as a series of specials than became a series namely the cult canadian series "The Raccoons" on the grounds of people of then and pitifully now are basically closed minded into thinking cartoons like these are 'bad' and cartoons like South Park and Family Guy are great, where in reality... The Raccoons and Chucklewood Critters have entertainment value where as Family Guy and South Park gets tiring pretty fast like Will Farrel's comedy.
