Sonic the Hedgehog: The Complete Series Talkback
Well, it's out, all. Sonic the Hedgehog: The Complete Series is now available at fine retailers near you. Discuss your thoughts on the box set here.

I'll have to wait a while to see if my Wal-Mart has it (which I have my doubts they will; my Wal-Mart isn't exactly the best at carrying Sonic merchandise), and if not, I plan on picking it up at Best Buy tomorrow.

Exciting times!

I picked it up this morning at my local Best Buy and I went through the packaging and the bonus interviews.  I love it!  The menus are awesome and the interviews with Jaleel and Ben were even more than I could have hoped for.  Thanks again for everything, Brian!

Yeah, I'm very excited to hear all the comments--good and bad. I highly encourage everyone to drop by to give their feedback. Porpoise, you can do the same (since I know you're a site owner).

RE: Sonic the Hedgehog: The Complete Series Talkback
I'll probably do a bit more of an in-depth review for my site later, but I'll summarize my thoughts for now.

I've gone through all of the special features and (I think) all of the easter eggs.  My favorite part of the set (besides the episodes, of course) would have to be the interviews with Jaleel and Ben.  I really didn't expect Jaleel to sound as excited to talk about the show as he did-- It was great to hear from him after all this time of really not knowing how he felt about voicing Sonic.  He seems like a really level-headed, nice guy.  The questions he answered were great, and I absolutely love his easter egg on disc 2.  Thanks for keeping that question in there (love your little cameo, too)!  Seeing and hearing Ben Hurst on camera was great.  I've heard most of the stories before, but it was so cool to actually see him tell them on camera.  I love that he talks about the fans/chats and about his desire to see Sega and/or DiC bring the show back.  It's beyond awesome that those quotes are in there-- I'm so glad they made the cut.

I love the summary on the back of the box-- especially the fact that it uses the phrase "SatAM" in there.  That's just awesome.  The menus are REALLY nice, especially the animations to and from.  I don't know how you guys did it.  I have no gripes at all as far as picture and sound quality are concerned.  I like how you used the theme song in the menus, both with and without vocals.

Let's see... For nitpicks-- On one of the inside case edges the title is bold and on the other it isn't.  I was kind of hoping that the cover would be embossed so the characters popped out a bit.  I was a little surprised to see Knuckles in one of the pieces of fan art, seeing as he never showed up in the series.  There were a few pieces of fan artwork that I really wish had made it into the set but didn't.  That's about it for gripes (although I obviously haven't checked over the entire set).  I really love the fan art that was chosen for Disc 3 and 4, especially.  Of course, a list of fan sites would have rounded things off nicely... but I understand the issues there :)

...Oh, and I wish Sega would get with it and promote this thing!!!

By the way, great interview on Toon Zone :)

Knuckles did make it into the fan art, but there is a reason. We took art submitted from people of all ages and the images that include characters not used in SatAM were done by youngsters and then there was one done by a young man with a mental handicap. We asked specifically for SatAM-related art, but found exceptions with certain pieces. For instance, the cover image for the disc 1&2 thinpak has characters that are not to SatAM specs, but the art was too good not to use in some dynamic way.

As for a European release, I'm afraid we don't have the rights to distribute overseas. But if you really want one of these sets, there are certainly ways to get one.

Thanks, guys!

Brian

BTW, Porpoise-- Loved your video. I even have it up on my My Space!

RE: Sonic the Hedgehog: The Complete Series Talkback
Hello everyone! I know I don't come here as often as I do at other forums. But I pretty much wanted to give everyone my imput and ideas on the DVD Boxset. I will probably go over what I have gone over so far, since I was really busy these past couple days.

I really like to thank Brian Ward for helping get all this together. Tis really awesome to have this entire thing inside of one cool box. And man, I'm just glad to finally have this entire collection at my fingertips. Well... 2 copies really. The other is for a really good friend of mine that I know he will love.

OK. First off.

I normally do NOT do this and I don't like to, but I noticed that some of the Sonic images on the edges were those that were actually used in those Sonic Underground covers. LOL Seriously, when I saw that, I said to myself,"Hmm... looks familiar... but where have I seen it?" And then sure enough, I remembered where it came from. :)

I went crazy and ballistic on the special features. I just immediately ran towards them, and started watching all of them. And I finally found those crazy Easter Eggs! Yippie! I still haven't watched the episodes yet, because I was busy most of the time just diving into those interviews and listening to them. I was also fascinated by the storyboards as well. I can at least see now as to how the animation goes into place, as well as how the writing script is also constructed. The really hard work put into one single episode surely is interesting.

The interview with Ben Hurst really made my day. Finally getting to see him was pretty awesome, and man, he really sounds like he should narrate on movies just like Porpoise mentioned at his site. And Ben looked pretty enthusiastic about it too when it came to talking about the whole entire series in general. And when he mentioned us, the fanbase, I was like.. whoah.. that was really nice to hear that from him. Of course, I wasn't there when it came to being on that chat 7 years ago. I was still 11 at that time. Wasn't too smart then. XP  But he did have mentions some very interesting points when it comes to writing and sorts. Truly something interesting to think about.

I also liked that Easter Egg interview with him on disc 4. LOL Truly something that I liked listening to.
Those Jaleel White interviews were also quite something. I was kinda having a hard time trying to get what he said at the end of the Easter Egg one on Disc 2. Was also nice to hear from Brian on there.

Getting to hear Jaleel White after a really long period of time was pretty good. Especially since the last time I saw him was in the movie Big Fat Liar.

But getting his take on voice acting was pretty neat, getting to understand alot more about what goes on in the recording session and all.

I kinda wonder if he can still play as Sonic today after a really long time. But getting to hear him play as Sonic again would truly be awesome.

I didn't check out the written script yet, but I have checked out another one over at SMS, [I don't remember if its the same one]. But what I did look at on the features were the storyboards.

I mean, seeing the last episode in storyboards was really something to see. Infact... I don't think I have ever seen that anywhere else in any other DVD boxset that I have bought such as Family Guy and all those other ones.
I mean... seeing these really just... blew my mind away. I mean... its pretty much the blue prints of the animation and the artwork that will later on be used in the show. And that by far has pretty much given me a good insight and a pretty nice taste as to how the animation business works in such a way really.
============================================================
Well thats pretty much my current imput on the boxsets so far.
I won't be giving my reviews online until I have watched EVERY MINUTE of this boxset. Of course, I cannot say that I can just straight out give it a 5 out of 5 as much as I would really love to. I mostly want to be fair and state the pros and cons, and not to make the reviews make it seem to perfect.. Because then... it really wouldn't be too much of a professional review would it?

Oh well... since I have nothing else to do tonight, I am going to continue watching the rest of this boxset and then give my complete opinions and ideas later.

Once again, thanks Shout! and Brian for this really incredibly opportunity for us to help pitch in, and for bringing back a part of my childhood into the forms of well thought out DVDs.

You're very welcome, Rave. Thanks for the feedback. And I'm looking forward to reading your professional, impartial review later. If you have them, bring on the criticisms. I can take it. ;)

Thanks!

RE: Sonic the Hedgehog: The Complete Series Talkback

Whew! I was able to find the SatAM Complete Series DVD set at the local Wal-Mart. Man, it was only $20 too! I would've easily paid $30 retail (or more), but apparently the store knew how much of a SatAM fan I am and lowered the price just to please me further. =)

I have held the DVD set in my two hands - exciting indeed! - and have checked out the packaging completely. Some of the fanart is great (Disc 2-4 covers, bottom-right corner of the 1&2 pack, bottom left two pieces of the 3&4 pack [even if Fang the Sniper is in there! since Fang is that awesome], and the gorgeous Princess Sally Alicia Acorn piece underneath Disc 3); some of the fanart isn't so hot; overall, I'm satisfied with the packaging only because of how well ShoutFactory interacted with the fans -- FUSers and distant SatAM fans all -- to pull together this DVD set. I'm definitely looking forward to watching SatAM again, particularly such episodes as Blast to the Past and The Doomsday Project. The bonus features look fairly awesome too: a complete overview of The Doomsday Project, plus conversations with Jaleel White and -- holy cow -- Ben Hurst! Obviously I would've loved to hear from Len Jansen, Kath Soucie, Pat Allee, and others...but I will surely take what I can get (and I got a lot for my money here).

To ShoutFactory, THANKS for putting this out. I mean it. This is truly awesome. To Brian Ward in particular, I respect you for taking a lot of time working with FUSers and other SatAM fans (not to mention SEGA and DiC people, etc.) in order to create a DVD set for a show with which you were unfamiliar until recently. Good to see you were able to gain a passion for SatAM, Sonic, Tails, Sally, and everything and everyone else the show had to offer -- except possibly...Ro-becca. *shudders* Let's not go there...

I'm thrilled. Sorry if you wanted a rant -- I'm all smiles here! ^_^ Let me end this post with my SatAM Anonymous line.

"Hi, I'm a 22-year-old excitable econ student living in backwater WV, and I love SatAM!"

~I'm out. Ciao. This is sweet. Thanks.

SatAM - The Complete Series Released 03/27/07 Thank you, ShoutFactory! Congratulations, FUS! ^_^

RE: Sonic the Hedgehog: The Complete Series Talkback

Sorry to disappoint you B Ward...But I've got no criticism either!  I picked this set up purely based on being a Sonic fan (I hadn't seen any episode of Sonic SatAM except for a brief few minutes when I was sick in second grade, and could never figure when it was on to see anymore).  I have to say, I'm extremely pleased on both ends, the DVD and the cartoon.  The most I had heard of Shout! before this was in a press release from DiC saying they aquired the rights to make DVD's based on their show.  I never paid much attention until I heard this set was being released, although I should have, I loved the old Mario/Captain N series. Anyway!  The DVD was really well put together, loved that you checked with fans for what they wanted to see instead of taking the company approach of 'you'll take what you get, and love it!'  I seriously think Shout! is my new favorite company for that :p  Love the fan art too!  I was pretty impressed with some of it, those fans should look into a career or something.  Really digged the menus too, completely out of this world (GAH!  talking 70's!).  Awesome job, I hope AoSTH gets released, that I did see, and I have to say, I'm definately a fan of Shout!  I'll have to pick up all the other DiC series now!  Excellent job!

(Sorry if I was sucking up, just really impressed, this is probably the best DVD boxed set I've seen, and it's great to see you loved making it B Ward)

Hey Brian. I must say the set was awesome!!!

The only nitpick i have that hasn't been mentioned is the art to the 2 thin packs. On Season 1, you have Dulcy with the freedom fighters... Dulcy didn't appear untill Season 2. And on the Season 2 cover, I think the art looks more Season 1 oriented. and the extras and the menus are awesome!

That artwork with Knuckles would possibly be more suited for Sonic Underground, and even Tails didn't appear in that show.

Just came in the mail from Amazon. I love it! I love that they used fanart on the boxes, I love the quality of the episodes, and I love that it's the whole series in one set, rather than releasing the seasons seperatly

I did notice a little dust/debris here and there. I never knew about the "Easter Eggs" on all four discs.

I did enjoy the interviews with Jaleel White and Ben Hurst.

We don't have to worry about it selling well in order to have AoStH released on 07/17/2007! AoStH is on it's way!
