MST Extras Suggestion Box
Hey B Ward, I was just putting in my two cents for extras for upcoming box sets. Have you guys considered throwing in Joel's Saturday Night Live appearances? I think there were four in all. I know Shout released Mr. Mike's Mondo Video earlier in the year and featured some SNL skits as extras; so perhaps this won't be a problem.

I second that, Laserblast!  Either his appearances on SNL or David Letterman, which he was a semi-regular on for a time back in the early '80's.  Also maybe Joel's appearance on Space Ghost Coast to Coast.

How about when appeared on Freaks and Geeks...
Extras Id love is uncut versions of the movie on DVD or at least the scenes that were cut for the MST version included as a bonus...
More thoughts on the makers of the movies used for MST as well as the MST crew...

I'm pretty sure that Universal holds all home video rights to the movie, since they own the Grammercy library, and Universal seems unwilling to spend any money on *any* of the Grammercy films, based on Kevin Smith's intro to the alternate cut of Mallrats on the anniversary DVD/HD DVD.

* Scenes to movies not featured on the MST3K version as a special feature.

* "Best of Host Segments", or at least segments from episodes that legally can;t be released (REVENGE OF THE CREATURE for example)

I'd like to see the Turkey Day intros/outros and the segments of Mike as Jack Perkins from the Mystery Science Theater Hour. The "Poopie!" tapes, the award specials and both "Making Of" shows would be great too.

What about music videos? Like music from the movies, then make a video with clips?
Like "ANY WAY WHICH YOU COME" and "SUMMER IN PARADISE" by Karen Lawrence from SOULTAKER. "EDGE OF A DREAM" by Steven McClintock from SPACE MUTINY, and that song from the ending credits of SQUIRM, I'm not sure of the title or singer, "shadow" or something.
If they could get the music, either releases it as a MST3K CD, or on the next box set. I'd love to hear the music, but some of these are way too hard to find.

RE: MST Extras Suggestion Box
We have thought about including Joel's appearances on other shows, as well clips from any of his stand-up performances prior to MST3K.  We especially wanted to include this footage within the first part of the doc we shot for the 20th Anniversary set.  But we ran into a couple of issues.

One is the fact that Joel doesn't really seem to have any of those performances himself, so we'd have to track them down on masters of high enough quality that transferring them to DVD would be successful.  Secondly, we'd have to license them.  Depending on the series, that can get VERY expensive.  Often, it can be as high as $10,000 per minute.

I really enjoy the new Mike intros on two of the Rhino boxes, any chance of doing more of those? Also, I noticed Joel has a "Welcome to Shout Factory" clip now (it's new to me anyway), and his would be awesome too, I'm sure.

I agree with AdamCerious that the Jack Perkins wraps from the MST Hour were very fun extras.  Given that most of the 'Hour' episodes have already been released by Rhino without the wraps, perhaps a complete collection of the Jack Perkins segments could be considered as a bonus.

For me, anything where we can get the cast involved in something would be great. I was a fan of everyone who was a part of the show, so seeing Joel or Mike or anyone else involved in some capacity would be really cool. Hearing their thoughts now on things or having them do something original together.

My dream would be if any three of them did a "lost short." The premise would be it was a short film sent as another experiment that was documented by Cambot but never released. I realize Joel has CT and Mike has RT now, so the odds of that are slim. But that's why it's a dream. I think it would be cool to see either one of them back in the theater with the Tom and Crow.

Hey, I just read on Bill Corbett's twitter that he and Trace will be talking about Crow at Dragon*Con. Any chance you guys will be there and it'll be included on a future set? He hasn't confirmed the exact day/time, but says "I think it's Sunday, but will confirm soon." It would be pretty awesome to see, for those of us who can't be there...

I'd love to see more episodes with new introductions by either Mike or Joel (or heck, Trace or Kevin or Frank - especially since for a time Frank was responsible for actually suggesting or picking the lousy movies).

You know we are expecting something extra special for the Crawling Eye. I know you have the history of MST extra, but something specific to this landmark episode would be nice. Interviews with the folks who were there, why they picked the movie, what they were feeling as the got ready to launch a new era for the show. Any commercials for the ep, reactions from critics or fans... stuff like that.

That's a tough one.  The interviews we shot for the 20th Anniversary set were all done at once, with everyone involved.  And it was a fairly easy shoot because they were all shot back-to-back in one day at Comic-Con.  They were all in one location.  Shooting interviews with those guys now would be rough, because of the fact that they all live in separate towns all over the country.

We're definitely looking into bonus materials for all the movies, so hopefully, we'll have something good for you guys!

If I may make a suggestion for an extra feature for Volume XVII: I would love to see an interview with Peter Breck.  I've always thought he was a good actor, in spite of the movies he was in.  Whether playing a scientist in The Crawling Hand or Bob Mooney (one of MST's most memorable characters) in The Beatniks, Breck always struck me as an interesting guy, and I would love to know how he approached his role for Mooney in particular.  Hell, he may even have stories from the set of The Big Valley too!

I think for cast interviews for Crawling Eye Joel , Trace and Josh would work for me since they were the 3 main cast members at that time

Sadly, while we have the license to the movie for this release, I'm afraid we don't have those merchandising rights.  Darn...

Would this little clip from a CBS Morning Show be even a remote possibility?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_SQiojRWMnk

If so, that'd be groovy.  I doubt it though what with there being footage of a certain greenish/grayish lizard's films involved.  Although, seeing as the news program obviously had no problem, as it was a news piece...but yeah, this clip is great.

I'd very much like to see the TV spots for some of the episodes as extras.  I seem to recal that Comedy Central did some nice little commercials for some of the eps that included fun trivia.  If the day ever came that "Danger: Diabolik" were to come out I think the "Every TV show gets cancelled" commercial from the Sci-Fi channel would be an especially nice extra.

How about this for an extra's idea; instead of bot's figurine, we could get:

Johnny Longtorso!

Johnny Longtorso!

The man - who - comes - in - pieces!

...and each boxed set would only come with one piece of Johnny Longtorso, so you'd have to buy multiple boxed sets in order to assemble him.  I mean, you know... if you wanted to be diabolical.

Hey dsman - are you familiar with a website called "Resin from the Grave?"  They've got a pretty cool resin model available of "The Crawling Eye" as well a few other things featured in MSTied movies such as Rondo Hatton from "The Brute Man," "Gorgo" and "Robot Monster."

I don't think SF has it in them to be diabolical. I mean, I don't know that they don't, but I'm fairly confident.

But the Johnny Longtorso idea...? Pure. Genius. Well done!

A great bonus feature would be the Assignment: Venezuela shorts set.  Volume 7 has gone out of print and I didn't get a chance to buy it. Throwing the Century 21 Calling, Assignment: Venezuela, and A Case of Spring Fever shorts on would be a fantastic addition!

Hey Brain – It has been suggested on the MST board that a look at the career and life of Coleman Francis would make a cool extra on the next set. Considering that this is the last of the CF episodes that would be a welcome addition (I believe Anthony Cordoza’s still around and could be interviewed)

Also any chance of getting MST Hour segments for “I Accuse My Parents” and “Manos”? Rhino released these episodes without including that extra. It would be nice to see them.

Thanks

I would LOVE to see Tony/Anthony Cardoza being interviewed, almost as great as getting Zap Rowsdower for the previous box set!  If anyone could give us some insight into the world of Coleman Francis, it'd be him! (And don't forget his small role in The Hellcats, too, as the guy painting the portrait of a topless model!) That may depend on how he feels about MST3K, though.

Yeah, I mentioned that in the MST3k Forum about Anthony Cardoza.  I also mentioned it in the Volume XVIII - The Extras thread on this forum and I included a link to an interview he did on the Astounding B-Monster Website, so go check that out.  Since he did that interview, I can't imagine why he wouldn't be willing to do one for this, unless he hates MST3k as much as Ray Dennis Steckler.  Anthony is old (80 to be exact) though, so who knows...  It would be a really cool extra, though.
