Sorry, it's taken me a while to post this definitive thread. Just like with the Transformers thread, I will only be reading and responding to this one, so...
There isn't much I can say that's different here, although I will say that the original masters looked considerably better than those of Transformers. And, unlike Rhino, we will be completing the series. In one fell swoop, in fact. No, I can't go into even the vaguest of details about when, but I can say "soon." We're already working up a press release, so it's THAT soon.
We will have featurettes, like the ones on Transformers. We will have the designers, the producers, the writers, the voice cast, PSAs, toy commercials and more. As soon as I'm allowed, I'll go into more detail.
Oh, and to answer the questions about running times and how many episodes, etc... We are not moving into the DiC Entertainment years, only Sunbow. We have a pretty good relationship with the company once known as DiC, but have no real relationship with Cookie Jar, so it's not really as simple as giving 'em a call. Doesn't mean it'll never happen. But it does mean that the DiC incarnation of the series will not be included in our complete series set, nor will we be working on those season sets anytime soon.
In addition, G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero - Season 1.1 will include both original miniseries.
I'm really excited to be putting this set together. As I said in the Transformers thread, these two series WERE my childhood. So to be able to produce these sets is pretty special. And I'm gonna need a LONG vacation afterward...
Drop along any comments, concerns or questions here. Thanks, gang!
Hi Brian,
Are you working on G.I. Joe: The Complete Series on DVD? Is G.I. Joe: The Complete Series going to get released on DVD in Summer 2009? Is G.I. Joe The Movie going to include in the complete series of G.I. Joe? When is G.I. Joe: The Complete Series going to get released on DVD? I am very excited that I will get G.I. Joe: The Complete Series on DVD this year in Summer 2009! thank you.
It may not sound much of a big deal, but will the DVD have the correct season one opening credits retained? On the Rhino DVD sets, it was replaced with the season two opening.
I believe this is what the season one opening should have been:
Thanks for all the incredible work you guys are doing. I am so excited about the re-releases of the Sunbow shows. Now at 35, like you I grew up with these shows and still love them. I look forward to finally having the complete set of JOE. I can sit the Shout! sets next to my Rhinos.
Will the Shout! JOE and TF keep the commercial bumpers within the show, as Rhino sets did? I am really hoping Shout! has kept the bumpers. The bonus features included in these sets sound incredble. Can't wait for the day these hit the store.
The bumpers are included. As I mentioned in the Transformers thread and should've mentioned here, there are several episodes in which the episode audio bleeds into the commercial bumper. Rather than attempt a bad sounding audio cut where the bumper would appear, I decided to leave them in.
Not only included in the complete series set, the two miniseries will be the first two discs of the first season set, as well.
As for the movie, I can't really talk about that, yet. Soon.
The toy commercials as a bonus is the icing on the cake. I literally couldn't ask for anything more! And once again can I commend you on the amazing artwork for Vol 1.1! July can't come soon enough.
Did you guys get the Gijoe: Sgt savage and his screaming eagles pilot? It's pretty much a captain america rip-off but also has cobra commander, flint, scarlett, and doc in it. It's more or less the last episode of gijoe. It would make a good extra of the complete series boxset.
The few questions I had ,have been answered already except a couple and i realize Brian you may not be able to answer them right now, but i'll try anyway. Since there are going to be 95 episodes plus at least a bonus disc mostly likely, how many discs do you think the Joe set will comprise of? 15-17 discs? And also do you know if the complete boxset will be availible in retail stores and other online stores or will the complete boxset only be availible through Shout directly....I ask because the RGB friehouse set was only availble through Time Life's website, althought the single vols are going to be sold in stores, i didnt know if the complete boxsets were going to be Shout exclusives through their website or something to that degree. I know Shout and Time Life arent related at all, but i didnt know if Shout was going to do a similar thing. Thanks
You are doing a good job Brian on producing G.I. Joe: The Complete Series on DVD? Will the mini series and the movie be in G.I. Joe: The Complete Series on DVD? Thank you.
I know you can't talk about the Joe Movie just yet but I wanted to bring to your attention if it hasn't been brought up to you already. The Japanese cut of the movie contained the real cut where they say Duke is dead instead of the US Edit where it says he is in a coma. As much as it sucked that they killed Duke I would love to see the original uncut edit of the film. "What can I say I'm hooked"
Yeah, unfortunately, I can't discuss the number of discs or what will or won't be on them, just yet. Soon, I can talk about the complete series sets, what will be on them, when they'll be released, how they'll be packaged, etc.
Interesting about the Japanese cut of the movie, I remember reading about the death of Duke being changed via the dialogue but didn't know there was an uncut version out there. Any additional footage in that version? Or just altered dialogue? If it's just dialogue, it should be pretty easy to include that version simply via an alternate audio track.
As for the intros, here it is plain as day:
First mini-series intro (only used for this mini-series):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sNrvETpIObw
Revenge of Cobra intro (second mini-series, only used for this mini-series):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qUYrh9fmMYY
Season 1 intro (first used with Pyramids of Darkness mini-series premiere):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5YjfGex5JHY
Season 2 intro (first used with Arise, Serpentor, Arise! mini-series premiere):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BeP_OhS9_Kc
Movie intro (only used for the movie, and da-amn what a kick-ass intro and version of the theme song!):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H6bqD4XKLkw
I remember even the old fhe VHS releases had the titles messed up on most of their releases, using the first mini-series intro for the majority of them... It'll be nice to FINALLY have these right!
AWESOME to hear that the original two mini-series' are going to be in the first set! Those were both great, epic tales...
As far as I know there was no new animation or a substraction of animation in the Joe movie either. It was just a dialogue change once the Optimus death backlash started. I watched the Joe movie a week and a half ago and I can tell you if you were watching the "death" scene with the audio turned off you would think Duke died. Even the very last scene of the film makes it appear that Duke has died. I could be wrong of course. It would be a nice bonus to have the original audio cut though....as a bonus.

For everybody reading this discussion, who wrote to TVShowsOnDVD to make sure we knew about this thread (and there were a LOT of you!), thanks for taking the time. I've just posted a summary of the information up until this point. The URL is here:
I understand that DiC was acquired by Cookie Jar Group, and that Shout! has no existing agreement with the new company. Does Shout! intend to pursue an agreement with Cookie Jar Group?
Suggestion:
In additon to the season sets, it would be great if you guys also offered a 6 DVD set with just all of the mini-series and the feature film. The set would include: The M.A.S.S. Device, The Weather Dominator, The Pyramid of Darkness, Arise Serpentor, Arise, G.I. J: The Movie, Dragonfire. You could also add any susequent miniseries that I may be unaware of.
Would it be feasible to have a setting on the DVD whereby the bumpers are optional?

The bumpers are included. As I mentioned in the Transformers thread and should've mentioned here, there are several episodes in which the episode audio bleeds into the commercial bumper. Rather than attempt a bad sounding audio cut where the bumper would appear, I decided to leave them in.
So I'm a little confused. There will be individual season volume releases first, and then a "Complete Series" box set later on?
As much as I hate bumpers being left in tact (I find them annoying and disruptive to the flow of the episodes), I can understand your reasonings and am sure the rest of the sets' contents will make up for them. Especially any VA interviews you can get. I saw Michael ("Duke") Bell at ComicCon a couple years ago, and that guy was a trip. Tons of great stories to share and a lively personality.
Although I had no problems with the Rhino sets on a technical standpoint (I thought they looked and sounded great, except for the wrong opening being used in Season 1), I only got the first two volumes. I will definitely considering these new releases depending on price and bonus features, but so far things sound great. Especially that the original mini-series will be included after all. "The M.A.S.S. Device" remains one of my most favorite Joe adventures. I remember watching it all week long when it originally premiered. (I feel so old now. Haha!!)
Now all we need this year is for Robert Walsh to finally release that soundtrack of G.I. Joe music he's been saying is "coming this summer" for the last 6-7 years.
Thank you so much for getting GI Joe out this year! I have two nephews I am very excited to share these cartoons with (they've already enjoyed watching the 1980s He-Man Cartoons). Will the sets have captions/subtitles? There's nothing more annoying than buying a favorite show on DVD and then having no subtitles to see certain words or dialogue. And the PSAs! Finally, I can see these! Its very hard to find the REAL ones (I never got to buy the Rhino dvd releases) and there are only parody ones on youtube.
I will definitely be picking up the sets as you release them.
You might want to read back in the thread a bit - Shout's deal is STRICTLY the original Sunbow series. Meaning, it doesn't include the DiC series, Extreme, Sigma 6, or any of the other incarnations of the show. Even the Sunbow produced Movie is up in the air at the moment.

Could the complete season sets include the Venom Vs. Valor, Ninja Battles and Spy Troops DVD's that were sold with toys a few years back as extras?
I noticed that! I checked it out again after reading an interview with Flint Dille about the changes done in the wake of Prime's death. I was pretty sure it was just a dialogue change, so if they CAN get their hands on the alternate audio track it would make a nice bonus!

I have to say one thing that bugs me about the G.I. Joe release – doesn’t seem to be embracing the 45th Anniversary of the original G.I. Joe. It seems like these DVDs should be a 45 year commemorative edition of Yo Joe!
Over the years, continuing to today, Hasbro has differentiated A Real American Hero from the original G.I. Joe, Adventure Team or Super Joe. So while the brand of G.I. Joe is celebrating its 45th anniversary in 2009, G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero only celebrated its 25th anniversary in 2007.
Yes, I was fully aware of that when I asked the question. I nevertheless posed the question to moreless throw the idea out there anyway, perhaps they may be able to pursue the matter in addition to their deal with Sunbow. In any case, I'd prefer to read a response from someone actually from Shout!, as opposed to a response from another fan, no offense. But thanks!

If you are interviewing Buzz Dixon, get him to talk about what would have happened in a Season 3 of Sunbow's show. I read an interview once a long time ago with him where he talked about The Coil lead by Tamox and Xamot and how Cobra Commander would return, but I can't find it anywhere. It was interesting stuff and would make for some good info on the DVD.
B Ward, I want to personally thank you not only for your work on correcting the mistakes that the Rhino sets had, but also for LEAVING the bumpers in the episodes........there are some of us out here that like our toons in the format that they were aired in originally when we saw them on TV as children.
No need to get snippy. My information is accurate, based on ALL the responses in ALL the threads on the subject so far, and the associated press releases and news stories that have been put out so far. Shout is aware of the other shows, but they aren't part of the current deal, so no, they won't be released any time soon. You might want to be aware of who you're talking to before responding like that to people who are just trying to help and take a bit of the load off the "official" responders by answering questions posed by other fans with perfectly valid information. I'm not "just another fan," thank you very much.

I suppose I ought to state my own credentials, since I sometime try to speak in these threads with some "authority" of knowing what I'm talking about. I'm the News Director of www.TVShowsOnDVD.com, a 7-year old Region 1 DVD News website that was purchased by TVGuide two years ago. If you see Brian Ward saying something like "I don't know where {fill-in-the-blank} got that information", then my personal name is the one which you most often seem to see in the blank.

Mr. Lambert, I check your site out like 20x a day! I absolutely love tvshowsondvd and have so for years. I even listen to Alan Handleman's show and catch you (or whoever else from your website - might be the other guy) on his radio program.
I've always wanted to call into Alan's show and ask "what about Ducktales volume 4??" But Alan usually likes to stick with pre-80s era material.

Thanks for the nice things about the site. I don't do radio shows; I'm guessing you mean site founder and webmaster (and the guy I usually refer to as "boss"), Gord Lacey. He makes the site happen, period...I just fill it with content (I guess that makes him the Producer, and me the Director, eh? Never thought of it in those terms before!).
As for Ducktales V4, sadly I've heard nothing. If we ever hear of something, tho, we'll certainly post it to the site as news!

I am speaking for Deaf and Hard of Hearing fans out there across the country. We are VERY concerned about one thing regarding G.I.Joe and Transformers season DVDs... We were extremely upset with the Rhino's release and we all did not buy the DVD because it did not have subtitles.
Will those DVDs have subtitles??? We, deaf and hard of hearing fans will never know what they say on the television screen if we watch those on DVDs..
Please answer this simple quesiton: Will those DVDs have subtitles for Deaf and Hard of Hearing???
I have to argue with one point if you want to understand how we feel if there is no subtitles on the DVDs. Watch any GI Joe cartoon and mute it and make sure there is no subtitles and let me know if you understood it...

Hello! My name is Brendan,
I am speaking for Deaf and Hard of Hearing fans out there across the country. We are VERY concerned about one thing regarding G.I.Joe and Transformers season DVDs... We were extremely upset with the Rhino's release and we all did not buy the DVD because it did not have subtitles.
Believe me, I don't need to turn the audio off to understand your point. You won't find a bigger CC/subtitle advocate at Shout! Factory than myself. We're all hoping to put CC and subtitling on all of our titles in the future, especially for things like Transformers and G.I. Joe, but our budget is finite and when the cost of captioning all of the episodes of both titles equals roughly 3/5 of our budget, we have to look at it realistically. As I mentioned in the other thread, we're hoping to find sponsorship for captioning in the future, but haven't secured anything, yet.
You have my deepest and most sincere of apologies.
I forgot to take a moment to thank you for your advocation..
There are many ways to get sponsorship through NAD-- I realize that it is costly tool to do this; however, many companies needs to donate money somewhere to show support and we can take advantage of this for them to help all the fans enjoy their saturday morning cartoons for the rest of their lives..
Remember WE ALL do get old, and some of the eldery population WILL lose their hearing... and that will reduce their full enjoyment of recalling their moments of watching the old shows...
Not sure if this has been brought up already or not, but I've read about a supposed alteration in the two-part Season 1 finale "There's No Place Like Springfield," in either part one or part two. Apparently, one of those episodes ended with a small bit involving Shipwreck that was later removed following its original broadcast. (Which was so long ago now that I don't recall it myself.) I'm sure someone else here is more knowledgeable about this particular story and can provide details, but I was just wondering if this was something Shout! was aware of and has looked into, since lots of fans that I've encountered over the years have apparently always wanted to see this deleted bit restored.

I for one 100% think that this 30 sec clip should be restored but if it was removed before airing back in the 80s good luck getting it put in now!

I was hoping that you guys were going to put them onto dvd as well but from the sounds of things it dosnt look like thats going to happen.. also I for one would love if you put all the old joe toy commercials on the dvd's i think that would rock..

Hey, Hawk-- Not sure who actually owns the rights to the DiC series. I know DiC did not when we've dealt with them over the past few years.
As for Blu-ray, take a look at the thread as to why, but the short answer is: for now, no.
The toy commercials will be there. They're a trip. Always looking for more, so anyone who has good copies should hit us up at our main info email address.

But yeah, host/founder of the Multimedia Chronicles video series/podcast, and all-around home video enthusiast since 1984. In other words, I know my stuff and don't spout info that isn't accurate. Well, unless it changes in the interim of course... Oh, and tvshowsondvd.com might as well be my home page for how often I visit your site!
Videographer, Musician, Cartoon freak, and all around nice guy! Unless you get on my bad side, of course.
As to whether or not I'm famous...maybe in my own mind! Although a lot of people come to me for info about video/cartoon/TV show related stuff on a regular basis, so at the very least I'd say I'm considered something of an authority on the subjects.

I bought the sets from Rhino which left me hanging on Season 2 part 2. I believe individual sets are being released by Shout and also a complete series set. Just wondering how the seasons will be broken down individually and is there any chance that fans who already have the rhino sets will be able to just purchase a season 2 part 2 from Shout and not have to buy everything all over again. Just wondering if the episodes will be broken down with that in mind. thanks.
No offence to the poster asking about Blue-Ray, but to me it's overrated. And how much more definition do you want for an 80s cartoon? If anything the grainier the better lol. :)
And thanks Dave from TSOD - I check your site 30 x a day - though my heart sinks a little when it's just news of current shows.
Thanks to you and everyone else for the kudos about TSoD. Gord and I put a lot of hard work into it, so it's great to hear feedback like that. Trust me, we try to cover shows from every era. There are some weeks when the younger crowd will send us e-mails bemoaning the fact that the news for several days in a row seems to be all about the classics. "Don't you have news about anything current?" they'll ask. We hear it from both sides. I'm old-school, but I also like several recent shows.
Like Lost, for example. My advice about Blu-ray: don't sell it short until you see "Lost" on Blu. When you can see every grain of sand on the beach, and every drop of water splashing with the tide, your jaw will drop. When you see the vivid colors of the jungle, the sweet blue of the sky, the brilliant hues of an explosion, the fur of an animal (Vincent the dog, wild boar, polar bear, whatever), the freckles on Kate's face...you get the idea. And the uncompressed audio is just sauce for the goose.
I originally thought like you did about high-def: "is it really necessary?" Now I'm a high-def snob: I want as much at the better level as possible. Oh, I agree that not everything can benefit from hi-def. Could be that cartoons from the '80s are among that category, but then again we haven't really seen anyone make the effort yet. At some point someone will, and we'll see.
In the meantime, don't forget that "hi-def" on primetime TV, for a show like Lost, is almost always at the low end of the hi-def range: 720p definition. And if you're watching it via cable or satellite, they've compressed the signal on top of that (I watch hi-def broadcasts over-air, which is uncompressed). But on Blu-ray Disc, the definition is at the "true HD" rate of 1080p, or perhaps rarely at the slightly-lesser 1080i level. But when you see it at 1080, you'll be amazed. Or, at least, I was.
Well, we're drifting off-subject. Let's talk about G.I. Joe here instead!

Haha - yes I realised we derailed off-topic. Okay just my last thoughts on Blu-Ray... my main niggle is actually the packaging. I'm all for uniformity and to me the Blu-Ray movies look cheap on the shelf and the artwork is further reduced in size from that of a normal dvd. If your a collector of dvds, packaging matters just as much as what you see on screen.
A good 1080p lcd hdtv (samsung, sony) and a good upscaler make cartoons on dvd look amazing.
But does anyone know how many Joe PSAs there are? The Kid Rhino release of the film back in 2000 had 25 but I've read that there were 27. Anyone know? Having ALL of these on the complete set would be nice.

For those often beautiful painted backgrounds. While the character animation may only get a slightly noticeable upgrade in sharpness, the backgrounds would looks considerably better in HD.

Here's why older cartoons would look awesome on Blu-ray, assuming film prints are available to do it properly: For those often beautiful painted backgrounds. While the character animation may only get a slightly noticeable upgrade in sharpness, the backgrounds would looks considerably better in HD. So overall, yes I'd definitely say it would be worth it.

Ok So today I contacted cookie jar and I spoke with someone from there legal dept and I asked them if they still owned the rights to the old gijoe dic episodes and they said no.. The guy told me hasbro owns them and that who ever they give the licence to release the cartoon it would be then up to them to release it.. I also contacted hasbro and they said shout factory has the deal for both sunbow and DIC... so i dont understand why then you guys wont release it.. is there somthing we dont know.. maybe is the footage missing? damaged? www.hisstank.com
As I'm holding the agreement in my hands this very minute, I can say the DiC series is not part of it. Nor was it part of our DiC deal, since DiC wasn't the owner of the license. I'm guessing whoever you spoke with at Hasbro was not entirely in on the loop.
Who was the person from Hasbro? What phone number did you use?

Which is actually a higher (and faster) adoption rate than when DVD first appeared. Not to mention the prices of both hardware and software have been dropping considerably faster than DVD did in a comparable timespan. Make no mistake, Blu-ray isn't going anywhere any time soon. I really don't get all the "Blu-ray hate" out there. What's so BAD about finally being able to have movies and some TV shows in near theatrical quality in our home?
Those of us that DO have Blu-ray would appreciate such a release. It could be done in lower quantities, but for a release like this that is going to be MASSIVE int terms of sales, I would thinking snagging a few extra sales from the current HD crowd wouldn't be a bad thing. Not to mention, that 12% represents MILLIONS of users. Take a look at The Dark Knight's sales on Blu. Hardly small numbers to be scoffed at... OF COURSE the numbers are lower than the same title's sales on DVD, but that's to be expected - DVD has been on the market since 1997, Blu-ray since late 2006. To expect them to have identical market shares at this early stage is ridiculous.
In short, no Blu-ray's market share isn't as big as DVD, BUT it's big enough to consider a release due to the high profile nature OF these releases. It would sell big numbers on pretty much ANY format.

I do not own a blu-ray player, so I would NOT buy blu-ray.
Thank you for all of the great information in the New Joe set!
The first thing I thought of when I saw your name was...B.J. Ward, who did the voice of Scarlett. I am sure you already thought of that. =)
I have all of the Rhino rleeases and if the video quality is better here, I will be buying the new sets.
Thank you also for having Scarlett actually on a cover for the dvd release. Rhino seemed fixated on Lady Jaye, and used Scarlett, who I know and love as the first and best Joe Woman (who can beat a fiery red head ninja from Atlanta???), only on a tiny shot of the first 2 mini series release aretwork covers. Even that had something covering part of her face. Lady Jaye somehow made the movie cover/poster, and her face was all over the Rhino sets. Lady Jaye is great too, but Scarlett deserves more respect.
Keep giving Scarlett the respect she deserves. =)
Thank again, and have fun working on the sets. That is a dream job!
Yo, new info!

Yeah, I made one "Transformers" news post with the GI Joe info in it, too. Sorry, you'll be seeing me do a LOT of that, since the info I'm reporting is often about both shows at once. I'm trying to trade off, though: TF this time, Joe next time, and so on.
Ready for a foot-locker-shaped Complete Series set? No movie, however. Too bad. Brian, you've explained why there wasn't an inclusion of the TF film in that set. Why no Joe, though?
Excellent news! I will pay $200+ per set...this is how much I want these. I just HOPE that the sets released at ComicCon are NOT some extra special sets compared to what we get later!!!! I would hate that.
But yea, great news, excellent news actually, but it's kinda a shame no Joe movie since that was Sunbow too(??). Oh well.
EDIT: just wanted to say after I re-read this, this is just amazing news and still amazing that we're getting complete sets. So, not having the Joe film is fine....I don't want to sound ungrateful. Having the Joe film would be icing. Maybe we'll get a 2-disc release from Shout! later Don't know why it would have to be 2-disc....just makes it sound important.

How much time will there be between the exclusive online sales of the complete series sets and when they become available at major retailers? I'm always leary of buying big sets online. I got some damaged items in the Real Ghostbusters set from Time-Life and I'm still waiting 5 months later for the replacements.
Mwanders, as a redhead myself, I couldn't keep Scarlett off the cover, despite the fact that Lady Jaye does seem to take over as the prime female Joe of the animated series. And Ms. Ward (B.J.) will be well represented in the complete series set's bonus features! She's an absolute angel!
If anyone (besides myself) owns the complete series set of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, those seasons are packaged in digistacks. Imagine a cardboard "book" with "pages" made of hard plastic.

B Ward could you expand a little more on the "digistack" packaging? i have an idea but not entirely sure, but it sounds nice.
You are 100 percent correct I was wrong.. The guy I spoke with from hasbro gave me the wrong information.. I got an email from there media dept. They said that shout only has the sunbow license like you stated.. hasbro did say that they own the DIC ver of gijoe and that there are no plans to release it as of right now. I guess its almost like the gijoe extreme line, were they figure there wasnt a big enough fan base to rerelease it.. Oh though seems like it might be somthing you guys might want to look into in the future.. maybe if everything goes well with the sunbow dvds. I would forsure buy the DIC dvds if you guys were to get them.. Im sure hasbro would work somthing out if things go good with the current deals you guys have with them.. Even if its a year or 2 down the line.. Anyways I didnt want to sound like a butt head.. I am very excited about both gijoe and transformers coming to dvd and I feel like shout is a great company and who better to release it than you guys.. I am extremly thankfull that you guys are puting the entire sunbows series onto one set as well as parted sets.. :) I look forward to buying these for myself and gifts for family.. this time i will buy like 3 of each just to have extras. I do have 2 more questions though.. I see many people saying somthing about the gijoe movie.. are you talking about the 86 cartoon movie? if so wouldnt that be apart of the sunbow license? Also is there any chance of you guys adding the new gijoe resolute cartoon movie to the set or is that an entire different ball game.. Also I understand if you cant comment on the last question.. Anyways thanks again and YO JOE... www.hisstank.com
I'd buy the DiC series too. I'd pay $100 for those 44 episodes!!!!!!
B. Ward: that's awesome that there will be a place for the Joe movie in the complete set. Awesome
EDIT: Ward, you guys are releasing the '86 movie at the same time the live-action comes out later this year, right?
That would maxamize your profits, huh? It would make perfect sense. I checked out picks of the Buffy complete series and I see what a digistack looks like so I have a good picture of what the footlocker might appear like. Being able to "put" the Joe movie cartoon in the complete set in some form would make a very nice touch for us completionist.

That's cool that the "Complete Series" will come in a footlocker-style box, especially if it resembles the one that the original G.I. Joe figures came in back in the '60s. (My dad still has his and it looks really cool.) Will the price be revealed before all the season sets are released, though? These "Complete Series" sets are typically too expensive for me to buy so I usually have to stay up on getting the season sets as they're released, but if I know ahead of time that the complete set is affordable, then I may just wait for that instead of buying the season sets.
Oh, trust me... The footlocker is AWESOME. With some interesting features. So whatever you're thinking, throw it out the window. Because I promise you that the set isn't just one you open and voila: digistacks. No, no.
As for the movie and Resolute, Hasbro has a separate licensee for Resolute. And while it would make sense to capitalize on the release of the upcoming live-action film, we don't want to confuse folks in anyway, so we're holding back the release of the animated movie until people have had an opportunity to purchase the new movie. Makes sense for all three Hasbro, Shout!, and Paramount.
Like I said, though, if you own the original Rhino release of the film, there will be an empty slot just waiting for you to include it. If you don't have Rhino's original release and you're waiting to see what we might do with the film, that slot will be perfectly filled a little later on.
Ah, okay! Now THAT makes perfect sense - release the show to capitalize on the movie in THEATERS, then release the animated movie later to tie in with the home video release of the new movie. What I like to call the "double whammy" As long as there's a slot for it in the footlocker so we can have the entire Sunbow saga together in one nifty package, I'll be one happy clam indeed. My YouTube page, home of The Multimedia Chronicles:

No, no... No double whammy. The point is to not confuse consumers when they go to buy the live-action DVD out later this year. We will not be releasing the animated feature until later. Possibly even 2010.
Hi Brian,
I am looking forward to buying G.I. Joe - The Complete Series on DVD! Is G.I. Joe: The Animated Movie going to get released on DVD this year or 2010? I will also buy G.I. Joe: The Animated Movie on DVD when it gets released by Shout! Factory. thank you.
Gotcha. I realized that after I posted...oops. Oh well, good to hear it'll be out at some point in the not too distant future.

B Ward - Is there a widescreen print of G.I. Joe: The Movie, perhaps 1.85:1? (Most animated movies seem to be in that ratio at the most.) I assume there was since it was originally destined for the big screen before being released direct-to-video instead, but have never read about it. If the question strays into territory regarding the movie that you can't talk about yet, that's okay. Was just curious. :)
That's highly doubtful, you might want to see some of the info about the Transformers Movie aspect ratio in the other thread. Most likely it was produced in 1.33:1, then if it HAD had a theatrical release it would have been cropped to 1.85:1, just like Transformers was.

When Rhino released GIJOE Season2, part1, in one of the episodes the soundtrack has an error. During the last episode of "Arise Serpentor Arise" it contains the UK version, hence the different names used in the episode.
I hope this is caught and fixed before the Shout release of Season2, part1.
Thank you for your time and for releasing this wonderful set! -Frank.
Will the press release for the Complete Series box set be out before Season 1.1 is released? I'd like to know how long I might have to wait for the whole series before I decided to buy the first part of the first season.
When are they going to do the press release for G.I. Joe A Real American Hero Complete Series Box Set on DVD? Is G.I. Joe The Animated Movie going to get released on DVD this year?
I think you mean Season 2, Part 1? Rhino never released Part 2 because they lost the license after S2/P1.

I sort of remember the problem with episode #5 of Arise, Serpentor, Arise since I don’t own those Rhino DVDs anymore; It seem like the European version of the final episode made the cut instead of the North American version.
In episode #5 GI Joe is referred to as Action Force and Sgt. Slaughter is referred to as Sgt. Slammer and the battle cry of 'Yo Joe' is replaced with 'Full Action'. It was very annoying because the actors who originally voiced the characters are NOT the ones who do the voices over’s for the European version, so it is very odd hearing two people voice over every character in the final episode.
All of the other episodes seem to be of their original North American quality on Arise Serpentor, Arise on the Rhino release.
Hopefully more info forthcoming.

Thanks for the heads-up on the alternate audio track. I will look into it.
Do you have specifics, as to what I should be listening for?
For info on the edits made over the years to G.I. Joe, check out Dave Thornton's site, http://www.joeguide.com Besides the edit to "There's No Place Like Springfield" Part 2, Rhino revealed an edited part of a scene to "Into Your Tent I Will Silently Creep" wherein Cross Country accuses his teammates of being thieves.
Also, will all the episodes have the proper title cards and end credits? The title cards for the episodes on both G.I. Joe and Transformers have been frequently missing, probably because the video used on previous VHS and DVD releases were from the international masters, coupled with their absence in the Sgt. Slaughter/Tommy Kennedy-hosted versions. Additionally, the audio on the DVD Battles version of The Revenge of Cobra featured the end theme from MASS Device on it. And just to be completely nit-picky and obscure, the final episode of the MASS Device miniseries had a very slightly extended end credits sequence that has never been on home video releases (and I have a second-gen VHS copy that I will happily donate).
As for special features, can I suggest a profile of the late, great Steve Gerber? Besides writing the best episode of the series (and indulging in a heavy bit of Superman fanboyism in the process), he had a great deal of power in shaping the tone of the series. Other good interview subjects would be Buzz Dixon (second season story editor, writer of the movie and a number of excellent episodes), Jay Bacal (Sunbow creative director-plus, Lady Jaye got her code name from him), Michael Charles Hill (writer of "Cold Slither", and, until Hasbro intervened, the story editor for the third season), and Russ Heath (lead Joe character designer).
Finally, when G.I. Joe: The Movie joined the syndication package, a number of episodes (including both parts of "Worlds Without End") were given wraparounds hosted by Sgt. Slaughter. (This also had the rather annoying side effect of severely limiting the number of episodes in the syndie package until the DiC era.) Is it possible that we'll see those wraparounds on the DVDs?
EDIT: OK, I just read the Transformers thread. A few notes about the Rhino DVD masters of G.I. Joe:
1) At the start of "Duel in the Devil's Cauldron", there's a re-take that Rhino missed-the shot with two Timbers.
2) The shot of Joe Headquarters in "Amusement Park of Terror" at the end ("Yo snow!"), the corrected version of Joe Headquarters was superimposed over the background from the prior view screen image (of the pyramids). However, in the aired version of the episode, the background in the "Yo snow!" shot is different (making the re-take painfully obvious)
3) In "Rendezvous in the City of the Dead", Rhino digitally "corrected" an error in the original version, where some generic soldiers and sailors blink intermittently in Act 1.
4) In "Chaos in the Sea of Lost Souls", Rhino digitally altered the shot where Destro's Robotopus expands into its full form.
5) In "Cobra's Creatures", there's a missed re-take at 7:34 into the episode concerning the animation of the castle's drawbridge.
6) Act 2 of "Worlds Without End" Part 1 has mis-ordered shots when Flint tries to radio Joe Headquarters (while the Joes are being chased by the CLAWs).
7) At the end of "There's No Place Like Springfield" Part 2, Rhino upheld an edit made by Sunbow after the first airing: When Shipwreck returns to his "home", he is confronted by "Mara" and "Althea", who threaten to kill him (Althea even calls him a drip). The real Polly shows up and attacks Althea before turning the pair into Synthoid goo.
8) It's already been mentioned, but the 5.1 audio for "Arise, Serpentor, Arise" Part 5 features the UK English audio. If you have this for the entire series, it might be interesting as an alternate audio track, though.
There may be other inconsistencies in Rhino's DVDs, as well, but I have yet to catch them.
I'm curious now and will have to check that out myself, as I still have my original recording of the MASS Device miniseries from when it first aired. (I kept it after buying the DVDs just for the nostalgia kick I get out of watching those old slightly-grainy episodes on a VHS tape. :) )
And just to be completely nit-picky and obscure, the final episode of the MASS Device miniseries had a very slightly extended end credits sequence that has never been on home video releases (and I have a second-gen VHS copy that I will happily donate).
Inside art (pics of the booklet, discs, etc) for the GI Joe S1.1 just went up on Amazon.com. Just search for it and you'll find it. I like that the 4 discs have a different character on each! Hope the complete set will do the same!
Another thing I just thought of: will there be chapter stops in the episodes, including one after the opening intro? I know some people think what's the point of putting chapter stops in a 20-something minute show, but I like having them at least at every commercial break and after the opening.
Hi Brian,
Will they sell G.I. Joe - The Complete Series on DVD exclusively at shoutfactory.com and other online retailers like amazon.com? what does a period of time mean and will it be forever for a long time? When will they start taking preorders on G.I. Joe - The Complete Series on DVD of selling it to shoutfactory.com, amazon.com, bestbuy.com, fye.com, target.com
Check the link in the post directly above your's. :)
Not quite some of the bonus features I was expecting, unless more have yet to be announced or the previously-mentioned voice actor interviews will be on another set.
I just remembered another error in the Rhino DVDs: the note from Cobra Commander in "The Further Adventures of G.I. Joe". Fairly blatant, but worth putting out there regardless.
So I was able to upload the scene were the audio track changes on the last episode of Arise, Serpentor, Arise. I uploaded it on Youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y3u3K4ivLts
At around 0:56 on the Youtube video the audio changes to the UK version. This was the way the last episode of Arise Serpentor ended on the Rhino release, it was very annoying.
I hope this is caught before your Shout! release of GI Joe season 2.
Thank you again, Frank.

>>> "I am The one born to rule and destined to conquer. Let those who fear me,follow me. Let those who oppose me, die." <<<
Wow, what a horrible hack-job of a dub they did for the U.K. version! It's MOSTLY the original actors, but whenever a character's name is different there's a really obvious, noticeable switch to other actors re-doing those lines and impersonating the originals... But yeah, completely obvious where the switch is. I'd be VERY surprised if this isn't fixed in Shout's version. My YouTube page, home of The Multimedia Chronicles:

I feel that having the Joe PSAs is an important part of the Sunbow Joe series. Some may agree or disagree and for all I know everyone of them will be included. But I did some quick research and found that there were 34 “Knowing is Half the Battle” PSAs. I’m about 99% sure this is accurate. The final source that appears to have the most listed is from http://www.joeheadquarters.com. And here is the rundown:
1. Alpine- What to do when you're lost
2. Barbeque- What to do if your house is on fire
3. Deep Six- Don't swim when it's storming
4. Mutt- Don't pet strange dogs
5. Quick Kick- Don't be in a hurry to build your tree house
6. Spirit- What to do if you catch on fire
7. Torpedo- How to tread water 8. Cutter- Have a ump ref your baseball games
9. Flint- Don't get mad at your goalie for letting in a bad goal
10. Dusty- Put reflectors on your bike or be runover
11. Scarlett- You can learn to water ski if you keep trying
12. Roadblock - Don't tell a stranger where you live
13. Flint- Don't blame your brother
14. Barbeque- Don't pull the fire alarm unless there's a fire
15. Footloose- How to stop a nose bleed
16. Snow Job- Don't skate on thin ice
17. Doc- Don't take drugs without your parents there.
18. Lady Jaye- It's okay to be a chicken if your smart
19. Ripcord- Maybe you stink at baseball because you need glasses
20. Shipwreck- Don't run away from home
21. Recondo- Don't hid in the frig
22. Airtight- What to do if someone passes out
23. Roadblock- Don't jump your bike over downed power lines
24. Blowtorch- Don't call the fire department from a burning building
25. Gung-Ho- Girls can skateboard better too
26. Shipwreck- Stealing is wrong
27. Will Bill- Don't go with strangers
28. Deep Six- Wear a life jacket
29. Leatherneck- Don't stay out all day in the sun or you'll turn into a lobster.
30. Lifeline- Don't eat junk food
31. Spirit- Blind kids can find lost kittens too
32. Cross Country & Beach Head- Protect your head
33. Dial Tone- Don't paint your bike in the garage
34. General Hawk - Don't try to beat the train
Sure it would be, and will be, great to have corrected episodes, audio corrected, etc., but I think including these 34 is a very important part of the collection too. These would make the complete set, a complete set.
http://www.joeguide.com identifies (with a couple of exceptions) which PSAs aired with each episode in the Notes section for the episodes, as apparently this changed from season to season.
I couldn't agree more! I do hope all the PSAs are included, and attached to the appropriate episodes. If you are to include them all in a separate menu, that's fine by me. But, if the bumpers are in the episodes, it would seem appropriate to keep the PSAs attached to the episodes with which they originally aired.

I agree too. If PSAs were aired they sould be attached with their episode just like the bumpers. So that means even if the one for Hawk aired 5 times we will see it at the end of all 5 episodes it aired on back in its original broadcast.
What leads me to believe that we won't have them at the end of episodes comes from the specs for S 1.1....if PSAs are a bonus feature then that means we won't see them at the close of the episode....right?

I agree about the PSA's, I own the Rhino GI Joe movie dvd and its got the as before mentioned 25 PSA's on it, knowing that I dont have the few others out there, I cant sleep at night because of it, hahaha just kidding, but we do need all the PSA's.

You know what else keeps me up at night? Not having the Ducktales and Talespin series complete. You won't believe how much sleep I've lost over that Trustkill01!!!!! But I digress,

I would prefer the PSAs be in their own separate menu and not attached to the episodes. I don't need nor do I want to see the same ones multiple times. That said, I think that list above might be incomplete because I recall at least one PSA with Duke, but he's not listed there.
GarrettCRW, this site joeguide.com is amazing! Folks, check this thing out! In the "notes" section there are tons of edits and tons of deleted material! It's crazy.

http://www.joeguide.com identifies (with a couple of exceptions) which PSAs aired with each episode in the Notes section for the episodes, as apparently this changed from season to season.
Speaking of the PSAa, it would be great if these could somehow be included as well:

I would think it unlikely given the language in some of them, but ye gods I couldn't stop laughing when I first saw those many moons ago... My YouTube page, home of The Multimedia Chronicles:

If we're going to have some of the parody PSAs, we probably need to start with the ones Rod Hannah did for Cold Slither Month a decade ago, if only because they were the first.
Yes, the PSAs should all be there, and the UK audio mistake on the Rhino Serpentor series should be corrected as well. Does anybody know if the corrected that audio mistake on the Serpentor DVD/figure set?
And any deleted and/or edited footage? Please find it and add it! We need that stuff! Wow, that JoeGuide.com reveals some that I didn't know about!
I never saw this site before. Good finds about the deleted stuff in particular! I hope Shout! can get to this stuff and restore it.
Fascinating if there is any more than what we know, but I'd at least like the ones which we know of (as described earlier). Hmm... Strange that we have heard and seen deleted Joe footage but no deleted Transformer footage [except for the TF:TM, which we don't know 100% if it exists or not].

I’ve got to say this ww.joeguide.com site is fascinating. I can’t say I fully understand it though with regards to all the “deleted” scenes. If you click on “notes” for an episode and check out the “USA Network Edits” there are TONS of them! “Where the Reptiles Roam” is a good one! Heck, most of them have edits! Was Joe originally aired on USA Network? I can’t determine if the episodes were originally aired elsewhere and then later when the USA Network had them they edited them for PC reasons...or time. The thing is, if the USA Network was the original airing station and what they aired was original then there are tons of deleted scenes that the writers and animators intended but were not included because of the airing network's rules! And if this is true, it kinda opens up a lot of questions: 1.) do we want what USA Network edited and what we call “the original broadcasts” or 2.) do we want what the creators intended???
And the site even provides screen shots of the whole deleted scene so you can gather a visual! It's crazy.
I would love to know if these edits and deleted material is original or were edits from later.
The UK audio was only on the 5.1 DD track on the Rhino release, not on the "original audio" option. I would assume that since Shout! went back to the original audio masters, there would be little fear of the wrong audio being included. But it's always nice to confirm these things! :)
Oh Brian, do not say it! Lady Jaye may have appeared in a few more eps that Scarlett, but she certainly did not replace her or become the elad Joe woman. How could she replace her? The red hair, the cowboy boots, the slight southern twang, and the attitude.
I am very excited to hear that Ms. ward will be used for extras and that she is an angle. She has been in the biz for years now and is quite a talent.
I hope Rachel Nichols can represent Scarlett in the live action film....I always pictured patricia Arquette in the role, with red hair of course. Maybe not now either...
I will be buying these DVDs for sure!

Yes, Arise on the DVD Battles set has the original audio, to go along with the broadcast master.
A word about the USA edits: the whopping majority were made when Joe began to air on USA following the conclusion of the DIC series. While some of the edits ("There's No Place Like Springfield" Part 2 and "Into Your Tent...") were made during the Sunbow years, most were made to sell more ads on USA. Otherwise, the run on USA (which ended in 1996) was a perfect reflection of the DIC syndicated episode rotation.
Excellent information! I was getting worried....kinda....after seeing all those USA Network edits.

Yes, I don't remember the USA edits because I don't think that I ever watched them in that run, and I severaly doubt that Shout would use them since they're on top of everything else. I taped them in 1986-88 when they ran on syndication (back then on the local Fox affiliates; usually right with Transformers), but I never taped the original '83-'85 runs (didn't have a VCR yet), so if stuff was in that that was never in the latter runs, then I never got them. When they ran them on Cartoon, I noticed they were edited, so I didn't tape too many of them. The Rhino sets have held me since then, though I've kept my old tapes.
Will things like the Baroness' deleted speech be in there? I never checked on if it was in the Rhino set because I just became aware of it thanks to JoeGuide. And how about things like Cross-Country's deleted scene be in there? I'd love any deleted/edited footage in there - if not re-inserted, at least with bonus materials. Same with Transformers. -Chris ChrusherComix

Brian,
Is G.I. Joe - A Real American Hero: The Complete Series scheduled for DVD release in Summer 2009 and how much will it cost and is G.I. Joe - The Animated Movie coming out on DVD this year? How much will it cost and how many episodes will be in G.I. Joe - A Real American Hero: The Complete Series and what kind of special features will be in the complete series? Thank you.
All your answers (or most, anyway) are in the posts above in this thread. The "Complete Series" is coming out this summer (first at San Diego ComicCon, then to online and retail stores), but the price hasn't been announced yet, from what I can tell. It will contain all two seasons of the Sunbow-produced series and have an empty placeholder to put G.I. Joe: The Movie in, if you already have the one that Rhino released. I believe Shout! is not releasing The Movie until next year.

Do you plan to Interivew Bill Callaway voice of Beach Head?
How about a special feature that talks about the hasbro universe. Transformers, gijoe, jem, inhumanoids, cops, and mask all had crossovers and took place in the same world. There was a reporter that showed up on all the shows also. Maybe you can talk about it or put the transformers episodes "only human" or "killing jar" as extra's. Both have gijoe guest stars plus mellissa ferborn( i think i misspelled that) from transformers is hawk's duughter!
How about a pop up video like feature on one episode giving facts about the show or a scan of one of the old kids golden books from the 80s?

How about a special feature that talks about the hasbro universe. Transformers, gijoe, jem, inhumanoids, cops, and mask all had crossovers and took place in the same world.
The only problem with the crossover is "Cops" and "Mask" are DiC Entertainment, not Sunbow Entertainment. And Mask was also a Kenner toy at that time.
MASK and COPS crossed over with Joe? That's news to me. The shows I'm aware of that crossed over with G.I. Joe were:
The Transformers ("The Killing Jar" and "Prime Target")
Jem (Hector Ramirez)
The Inhumanoids (Hector Ramirez)
Also, there are references to Spider-Man, which would make the following fair game:
Spider-Man and His Amazing Friends
Spider-Man ('80s syndicated-predecessor series to Spidey AHAF)
The Incredible Hulk ('82 series)
Spider Woman ('70s DePatie-Freleng, referenced in S-MAHAF)
Also of note is the tweaked Ace model that appears in "The Time Lost" from Dungeons & Dragons. If you want to get really tangental, Liz Aubrey played a model (and a blonde one, at that) in an episode of Thundarr the Barbarian, a show which had multiple future G.I. Joe writers on staff.
Would Shout be interested in restoring the deleted footage in "There's No Place Like Springfield" Part 2 and "Into Your Tent..."? I hope so. At the very least have the footage as bonus material, but I'd love to see it in the actual episodes if possible (that may offend some "original broadcast"-purists, but I'm a "completist"-purist). Also, I read on JoeGuide.com about Baroness' accent edited in at least one episode. I'd like to have everything there if at all possible.
Also, count my vote to have the PSAs in a separate or bonus menu. Or, if placed at the end of the episodes, not repetitive (once one has been shown, don't show it again later on).

Those little edited bits aired, so they should be on the DVDs. In fact, an artifact of the edited scene in "There's No Place..." is viewable if you do a frame-by-frame advance on the Rhino DVDs. Obviously, the dopes took it out based on an edited broadcast master. And, worst of all, that set gives credit to Dave Thornton!
That edited bit of The Baroness in Revenge was on the Rhino DVDs. It was only ever removed by FHE, as one of their bizarre edits for content.
Crossovers. Note: i didn't write this. It's from another site.
"The connections look something like this:
Foremost is really Hector Ramirez, as noted on the linked site. He appeared in G.I. Joe, Jem, Inhumanoids, had a cameo in the Joe movie cut, and might have been the news reporter from the TF episode, "A Prime Problem," though his hair was a different colour and he had the wrong voice actor.
Also in "A Prime Problem," the G.I. Joe character, Daina, of the Oktober Guard, appears (she's the Russian pilot attacked by Chumley who has her plane stolen). Her "Oktober Guard" callsign is indeed spoken aloud in the episode (it's no coincidence that this episode was the only pre-movie TF ep written by prolific G.I. Joe writer, Buzz Dixon).
In the G.I. Joe episode, "My Brother's Keeper," Prowl (or perhaps Bluestreak) appears on a television screen on the news. Furthermore, the story of the episode centres on COBRA's attempts to get control of the Voltronic Galaxer - the communications-disrupting mcguffin from the TF episode, "Blaster Blues."
The night club in "auto-bop" plays "cold slither" a rock song cobra made on gijoe!
Wreck-Gar shouts "Yo Joe!" in the TF episode, "The Dweller in the Depths."
In the TF episodes, "Five Faces of Darkness," we are introduced to Marissa Faireborn. Her father subsequently makes an appearance in "The Killing Jar" (actually, a Quintessons hologram of him, but still) - he is G.I. Joe's Flint, voiced by his original actor, Bill Ratner, further substantiated by the fact that Flint's real name is Dasheille Faireborn.
Most famously, Cobra Commander - under the alias of "Old Snake" - appears in the TF episode, "Only Human," still wearing his famous silver mask and still voiced by Chris Latta. He transfers the minds of four Autobots into synthetic bodies called "Synthoids," which previously appeared in the G.I. Joe story, "The Synthoid Conspiracy."
The Inhumanoid, D'Compose, appears on a TV screen in a news clip in the Jem episode, "Broadway Magic."
Inhumanoids features a minor character, a fighter pilot code-named Sabre Jet, whose real name is Brad J. Armbruster. This is the real name of G.I. Joe fighter pilot Ace, although whether they're intended to be the same guy or not is open to interpretation - SabreJet got paralysed and given Earth Corps armour.
The C.O.P.S. character Checkpoint is the son of " a member of a top- secret military team in the 80's and 90's" - given that his real name is "Wayne R. Sneeden III", his father can easily be identified as G.I. Joe's Beach-head, who shares the name.
A slightly more tenuous connection exists between the G.I. Joe story, "The Primordial Plot," and the TF story, "Dinobot Island." In the former, Cobra populates an island with cloned dinosaurs, which are left to live on it at the story's end. In "Dinobot Island," the Transformers find an island full of dinosaurs. Comparing images from the two episodes, they islands DO look identical from the air, and both episodes were written by Don Glut, but the dinosaurs being modern clones, and hence not a result of any kind of chronal anomaly, does not fit with "Dinobot Island," where the island is implied to have always been that way, and that altering it disrupt the flow of time.
Bumblebee was going to make a cameo in my little pony the movie but was cut!"
There you go!
The mask connection was not in the show but the toyline. Mask leader matt tracker was also released as a gijoe toy!
Plus you can add street fighter 2 to the mix thanks to them getting getting gijoe toys. Rocky was going to get a gijoe toy to but was canned.
Battle beasts showed up in an episode of headmasters so you can add them to!
I hope not, because I've got a question! This marks my first post here. Alrighty, can we expect to see the old animated comic commercials as a special feature for the dvd release? And PLEASE tell me if there is any plan to re-release the animated movie!
Coincidentally, another producer at Shout! was just on vacation in Hawaii. Not so much for me. No, I've been NECK DEEP with Hasbro stuff.
Let's see... I've made moves to make sure the missing shots in the Joe episodes are back in. Can't make any promises. I have to wait until those old masters make their way over to me.
We're nearly done with the interviews. There are still a couple people I'm hoping to ge, but have just about run out of hope. For instance, if anyone has a direct link to Buzz Dixon, it would be awesome. Can't seem to get in touch with him to save our lives.
As for the original comic commercials, you may see them as bonus features. Not sure. As of right now, they will make an appearance in the featurettes, but we're trying to maneuver through or around some legalities to put them on as standalone bonus material. We'll see.
Will the Sgt. Slaughter commercial break things be added to the dvd releases as well? Here is a link so you know what I'm talking about if you don't already. They were awesome to any kid back then!
Is this a source that you are using B. Ward? Is anyone else on here aware of this book? Sounds like everything we ever need to know is right here in this one book...or not.
That's a great book. My mom got it for me for Christmas a couple years ago. I wouldn't say it has "everything about everything" related to G.I. Joe, but it covers a lot from the cartoon and comic line (both Marvel and Image, if I remember correctly.) Worth picking up for fans. :)
I think I may have tracked down Buzz for ya, Brian. Check your mail...

What are the special features going to be for G.I. Joe - A real American hero: the complete series on dvd and how many episodes will be in it? When is G.I. Joe - A real American hero: the complete series going to be ready to preorder at Shout! Factory website and Amazon.com? When is G.I. Joe - A Real American Hero: The Complete Series going to get released on dvd?
Hi Brian,
Are they going to sell G.I. Joe - A real American hero: the complete series on dvd forever? When are they going to release G.I. Joe: The Movie on DVD? Thank you.
Jonny
Is there still time for commercials to be submitted? I have the second version of the Snow Cat commercial and the Bridge Layer commercial. I also have a few Transformers commercials but going by the TF thread, it looks like the deadline for that set has passed.
For the dvd release of G.I. Joe: The Movie next year, it would be fantastic if the original audio tracks with Duke's death, before it was re-recorded for the video release, would be included. The original dialogue for that scene, along with a few others, supposedly do exist, and were released on a Japanese laserdisc version of the film. Here's some of the info listed on wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pythona#Notes
Having the option of watching the film with both audio versions (i.e. "Duke Dies" or "Duke Lives") would be very cool. I'm sure I'm not the only one who would love it...
Looking for fan art for the DVD set! We're putting together a disc focused primarily on the fans and are looking for G.I. Joe fan art. The art must be family-friendly, scanned at a minimum of 72 dpi and received by Wednesday, May 27th. You can submit your artwork to sfgijoefanart6@gmail.com. In your email, please include your name, phone number and alternate email address, if not the one you submitted from. Those selected for the disc will be notified via email and will be asked to sign a release acknowledging your ownership of the art as well as permission for its inclusion on the disc.
I just wanted to take this moment to say thank you from the bottom of my heart. After the Rhino mess I thought these would never be released. I got a bootleg DVD Set from Ebay about 8yrs ago and watch those instead of the Rhino's because those are what were broadcast. I was 5 when G.I. JOE and Transformers came out so I have some pretty fond memories of coming home from school back in the 80s and watching these cartoons. I actually got my daughter into Transformers and the Star Wars Trilogy. Prequels are not permitted or acknowledged in my house. lol But in all seriousness, thank you. THANK YOU!
re: "So will these box sets only be for purchase on shoutfactory.com?"
It IS only for purchase online for now. But you've got the wrong URL there; it's not through ShoutFactory.com or even http://www.shoutfactorystore.com/ (at least not at this time).
The main site to buy GI Joe (http://www.gijoecollectorsset.com/) won't go live for another week or two; it's still "under construction". However, right this second you can get the Joe set pre-ordered via http://www.transformerscollectorsset.com/ if you wish. Follow these exact steps:
find a big red button with white letters that says PREORDER
click that button
scroll down to the bottom of the new page that comes up
look on the bottom for two items that have to do with GI Joe. the one on the left, under a picture of a green footlocker package, is "G.I. Joe A Real American Hero Complete Collector's Set"
click the "add to cart" button underneath that
you are now ready to pre-order both the Transformers and GI Joe sets. IF you only want the Joe set, then you can check the box that says "Remove" next to Transformers, then click the blue button nearby that says "Update Cart".
You may now click the button that says "Proceed to Checkout"
Follow the on-screen prompts from there.
Shout! will make the same sets, both Joe and TF, available in regular retail stores (and therefore other online retail site, such as Amazon) late this year, most likely in time for Christmas. But no general retail street date has been finalized yet.

I wasn't being very specific about the ins and outs of the online purchase. It's on shoutfactory.com technically, then you get redirected to their store site. If this set can be purchased on say amazon.com or a big box store, I would like to know in advance.

I don't suppose Shout! offers a payment plan like TimeLife did when I ordered their "Real Ghostbusters" set? I really want this, but $145 is gonna be quite a bit for me. :(
Brian, thank you for creating and participating in this thread... it's rare to be able to get questions answered prior to release like this.
Questions:
(1) Can you verify that the half season sets are packaged in standard thinpaks inside a cardboard sleeve? I really prefer this type of packaging to custom flipboxes and whatnot, so this would be a major point in favor of individual releases for me. It allows for nice cover art and very easy access to individual discs without flipping through others, and fits nicely on a shelf with other DVDs.
(2) I have heard that the complete set will contain bonus materials not available in the half season releases. Is this true?
Obviously, you can see my problem... I would prefer the packaging and staggered release of the half season sets, but don't want to miss out on any extras. Help! Thanks!
Haven't heard anything about a payment plan, but I'd be happy to look into it.
Poddie, the packaging for the individual sets will be slipcases with double thinpaks. And the complete series sets will, in fact, have bonus material not included in the individual sets.
Will the GIJOE complete set be available for sale at this year Comic Con, if yes what will be the price tag? Also what is the estimated time for the set to go on sale at retail, like Amazon?
Thank you for your time.
-F
"I am The one born to rule and destined to conquer. Let those who fear me,follow me. Let those who oppose me, die."
It won't be included and they have no plans to release it. There is a spot in the complete set for it if you had picked up the dvd of it when it first came out.

Will G.I. Joe: The Movie be in G.I. Joe: The Complete Series on DVD or will they release G.I. Joe: The Movie alone?
I thought that it simply wasn't being released right now so as to not cause confusion with the live-action film coming out, and would instead probably be released next year sometime? (This thread has gotten too long to search through, but I thought that's what was said.)
The last of the G.I. Joe discs are being shipped to the plant today. It has been an exhausting process, but short of having materials that simply don't exist, I couldn't be any happier about this release. You guys are going to love this set!

There is a grand total of 27 PSAs. Unfortunately, not all have survived outside the afterlife that is YouTube. We did an exhaustive search, but were only able to include the 27 that are on the set.
As for the booklet, it is primarily an episode and bonus feature guide, though there is an amazing introduction by Robot Chicken co-creator and G.I. Joe aficionado Seth Green. A note about the booklet: the cover is NOT what you see in the animated clip on the order page. The animator did not have the final cover image. It actually resembles more of a special forces field guide/training manual. It's pretty cool.
Thanks Brian. Maybe someone will see your response and can provide to you the missing PSAs for a bonus feature on the Joe movie Someone's gotta have them on VHS or something from back in the day.
ADD: Brian, is the box made of wood?

I totally agree on the toy packaging artwork on the discs. When I saw that, the memories came rushing back, especially the wall full of G.I.Joe action figures at the small local toy store which is sadly long gone 25 years later.

Has it been stated how long it will take before the individuals season packs are all released? I prefer the standard packaging versus the huge sets for both Joe and TF, but I'd really rather not have to wait a year or more to get all the seasons individually. Thanks!
It is no mistake. The street date for G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero Season 1.1 is now officially one week earlier.
Note to those who are fans of the DVD art: ONLY the complete series set uses the 25th Anniversary toy art on the disc labels. The disc labels included in the individual releases uses the same flared background, but incorporates art similar to that found on the cover on each disc.
As for how often the sets will be released, it's not really a question I can answer. That's more of a sales & marketing question. I can look into it. I can tell you that we've already begun working on the cover art for Season 1.2, so it won't be released too much later than the first set.
Which one is the July release? We have Season 1.1 and the complete series both coming out in July.
While I'm not entirely sure I remember the exact number on 1.1, I can say that I BELIEVE--if I remember correctly--there are as many as 25 on the complete series set.
I can't believe I hadn't heard of this before today - I'm pretty good about watching for Joe news, but this one crept up on me. Just glad to see a complete set finally happening after the Rhino fiasco, and that a guy as passionate about producing a quality product like B. Ward is in on it.
Big props to you, B. Ward, for listening to the fans and acting on it!
Pre-ordered, and already drooling by the front door.
And I'm a little surprised that he went into such detail about opening the set and looking over each piece of advertisement, yet merely mentioned each of the bonus materials, rather than actually giving his opinion of the interview with Ron Friedman or the presentation from '63, etc.
Brian,The exclamation points meant to show im excited to finally see a review. But, what happened to the good old days ,when dvd review sites had screencaps galore , from whatever dvd they were reviewing???
will the Matrix of GI joe complete series set have the famous 'lost' Simpsons episode 'GI Moe' that caused Fox to get sued for copywrite enfringement? I have only seen bootlegs but it is very funny, very realistic and i though it was funny that they had Otto as snake eyes. Please confirm.
Will feature releases of GI Joe separate season volumes include the voice cast reunion? I don't want to drop $145 on the footlocker set (even if it IS the whole series). I hope to share these cartoons with my 8 and 5 year old nephews. I plan to get the first season set that's out next week on the first day.
It says specifically on the ordering website under the complete details that the voice cast reunion is exclusive to the complete series set....as is the conversation with Larry Hama....
Sorry, but you're going to have to buy the footlocker if you want it....

I wouldn't count on getting a shipping confirmation email, or even using the status on "myexpresscheckout" as any kind of indicator....I also ordered the Transformers set, and it showed up on my doorstep last week, only three days after I ordered it, without any sort of shipping email notice, and it still says "in process" on the order at myexpresscheckout....
I figure the GI Joe set will just happen the same way....

The Banner on the site that scrolls is stating G.I. Joe Footlockers shipping Monday 13th
Did the G.I.Joe Footlockers ship on 07/13/09, because I have yet to recieve any email stating my order has shipped.
I'm guessing no one else has recived their confirmation email, or people would be posting like crazy.
I have confirmed that the sets started shipping yesterday, as planned. People who have not gotten their notices should expect them shortly. Apparently, the warehouse sending them doesn't do the emailing. They get scanned and then the company receiving that scanned information sends out the notices. So they run roughly 24 hours behind.
But, in short, if you ordered the sets, you should start receiving them as early as tomorrow, I would think.

Does the Friedman interview appear in the Complete Series Box Set?
Are the Complete Series Box Set DVD's identical in content (as I know the disc art is different) to each of the 4 discs in Season 1.1, 1.2, 2.1, and 2.2 (for a total of 16 discs) and then includes one exclusive DVD with exclusive content?
Just trying to clarify what is or isn't included in each release. Thank you very much.
Also, is it true that the Complete Series Box will be available in retail outlets more towards the holiday time? I don't know if I can wait, but would appreciate some clarification.
The 3-part Friedman interview appears on the complete series. Again... You won't find ANYTHING on the season sets that you won't find on the complete series sets.
There are several discs of bonus content in the sets. Contrary to popular belief, the breakdown will not be S1.1, S1.2, S2.1, S2.2. The first season had 55 episodes, while the second season only had 30. We've included the 10 mini-series episodes with the first season, so that's 65 episodes total, adding up to 95 episodes with S2. Therefore, the breakdown is S1.1, S1.2, S1.3, S2. S1.1 has bonus content on each disc, rather than a bonus disc. This was designed for breaking the discs out into single-disc collections like our upcoming "M.A.S.S. Device" disc. The remaining volumes each have a bonus disc of content. So, in the complete series collection, you will find bonus features on discs 1-4, 8, 12, and 17 (obviously, S2 will end up being a five-disc collection). Some of those bonus discs will include content not available on the individual season sets.
As for the time frame of its release at retail, nothing has changed since the last post. We have no time frame set for its release at this time. If you want the set, it is highly recommended that you pick it up from the site. While it's possible, I certainly cannot promise it will be any more affordable when it hits retail. When you look at the history of direct-to-consumer sales, the SRP typically runs a little higher when it hits retail in order to hit an acceptable profit margin for the label, distributor, and retail store. Since I'm not in the sales department and have absolutely no knowledge of those plans, I cannot say that's going to happen here, so don't go quoting me at other boards. But I am a major DVD consumer and have noticed this trend for years.

B. Ward, I'm very excited about getting my hands on this complete Joe set. It will be the pennacle of my cartoon collecting!
I do have one question, since it will be some time before I can sit down with the set and view it all, will some of the "deleted" scenes be included? One that comes to mind is the scene from There's No Place Like Springfield: Part II where Shipwreck confronts his synthoid wife and daughter and the daughter has a bazooka (this may be half-way accurate). Will scenes such as these cut before originally airing be included?
I investigated those "deleted" scenes. To be honest, I'm not sure to what they were referring. We do have the scene with Shipwreck confronting his gun and bazooka-toting family, as well as Cross Country's accusal of the other Joes in the theft of his tape deck. But I've yet to find examples of these scenes missing in other formats.
So, in short, yes. Those scenes are there. But I've never seen them missing elsewhere.
If I could be for sure if I did a order for the G.I. Joe set now for NDA shipping to get it del on FRIDAY 17th I would place an order now... otherwise I think I will wait till next week. I bet they are busy enough still with the pre-orders for G.I. Joe to ship the new ones placed.
still on the first disc of Transformers.
Hopefully someone who gets their set can post some pics of it on here soon. :-)
Thanks. Yea, I guess "deleted" was not the correct word to use. I've read so many different things but most of the edits came from the USA Network. I thought the whole Shipwreck/synthoid scene was deleted before originally airing. It was not; my mistake. www.joeguide.com is a treasure trove btw:)
Also,
B. Ward....thank you for this set! You don't know how much it means to own these episodes. Hopefully the Sunbow collection will sell amazingly so Hasbro gets their hands on some DiC series too and wants you guys to produce them!

If this helps I ordered the Gi Joe complete set on July 1st and I just got an email saying that mine will ship soon and is expected to arrive the 22nd of July. This is with the supposed free rush 2 day delivery.
I would bet you would get yours by the weekend. They shipped my Transformers set on the 13th - ordered it on the 10th.
I woudl figure they would have less orders for GI JOE than transformers since we are broke from that set temp. but then again some have been waiting to get the remaining missing episodes of GI JOE that Rhino never released.
Still holding hope for JEM and the Holograms. someone should release the sets.. otherwise it is just a company sitting on the rights and not even doing a release.

Yeah, I got the same email and I ordered on 5/29! :)
The 22nd is just the catch-all get-it-there-by-then date. I have no doubt it will be here by the weekend. Hell, I got my Transformers 'shipping' notice at 10:45 pm the night before it showed up on my door!

The bit where Althea (who, it must be noted, was based on a real person) says, "Daddy, you're a real drip," was edited when the show reran on Cartoon Network, and on the Rhino Season 1 Part 2 set.
I haven't received shipping confirmation either. Since I was more of a fan of Transformers than G.I. Joe, I don't mind the wait as much. I'm still not even halfway through the TF set.
I agree. But you have to keep in mind they couldn't possibly ship out every single order on the 13th...
Edit:
If you still have your conformation email from when you pre-ordered, it includes a link that you can use to track the status of your order. The only catch is that you needed to set up your account at the time you pre-ordered.
It's saying that my set has shipped, but I've checked my card statement online and I haven't been charged yet, so I have no idea if it's really shipped or not.
finally received my shipping confirmation. It says the package shipped yesterday?
I ordered the first day the item went live so I don't think the orders we shipped in date ordered order? or maybe all of the orders were shipped yesterday.
Got my shipping email confirmation last night, July 16th, at 11:42PM.
Said it shipped July 16th. Hope it arrives today cause if it doesn't and arrives Saturday it'll sit on my steps till Sunday evening!!!! AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I'm new around here, but I loved both the Transformers and G.I. Joe (Sunbow) cartoon series. As for delivery of the sets, I ordered BOTH the Transformers and G.I. Joe COMPLETE sets on 7-14-2009. My question is, how long from ordering to arriving at ones door can one expect to wait before getting either or both sets?
OK, I've finished watching the Season 1.1 set (still waiting for the complete set to rear its head), and I'd like to point out that of the re-takes/Rhino digital alterations I pointed out in April:
----- Original Post ----- by GarrettCRW at 4/20/2009 9:37:13 PM
----- Original Post ----- by GarrettCRW at 4/22/2009 1:34:01 PM
I just remembered another error in the Rhino DVDs: the note from Cobra Commander in "The Further Adventures of G.I. Joe". Fairly blatant, but worth putting out there regardless.
None have been addressed, and are the same as they were on the Rhino discs.
Garrett, we were assured by Habro that Rhino had not done anything to the episodes of G.I. Joe, as they'd done with The Transformers. Unfortunately, regardless of any "errors", it has be absolutely confirmed that these are the ONLY masters possessed by Hasbro. If there are masters elsewhere, Habro doesn't have access to them.
Hi Brian,
My order of G.I. Joe: The Complete Series Collector's Set shipped on 7/16/2009 and I am looking forward of receiving it very soon. I am looking forward of G.I. Joe: The Animated Movie on DVD soon to be released. Thank you.
B. Ward, you said there are 27 PSAs on the complete set - are 25 of those PSAs the same ones on the Rhino release of the Joe movie? I can only assume yes, however, just wanted to ask.
Since I know the title and character of all 34 I was going to compile a list of the seven that are missing and try and track some down.
I don't have a copy of Rhino's movie, but I'm assuming so. These are the 25 Hasbro has in their possession. In addition, we found two hidden on the episode masters not included in their collection, so we pulled those and added them to the list.
Thanks. Once I get the set I'll do a comparison and match'em up w/ the 25 on the Rhino movie (to make sure) and then figure out the remaining 7.
I want to see if I can find them online.

What about the original broadcast versions of MASS and Revenge of Cobra that were used on the DVD Battles discs?
Here are screen grabs I've whipped up. The broadcast ones from MASS and Revenge are from the recent DVD Battles five-packs, the others are from the bootleg circuit:

I pre-ordered my copy of the G.I.Joe boxset back in June and only recieved my shipping confirmation email around 12 am yesterday (16th). Has not arrived yet, and since they are being shipped via USPS "priority" it better come on the 18th because there is no mail delivery on Sunday and I'll be out of town until late Monday afternoon.
On a side note, why did Brian ask if there were any Rhino errors that needed fixing if they NEVER intended to fix the errors. I don't get what the problem with the masters is, Shout! should have both the 1" broadcast masters and the digibeta Rhino re-masters. That's all they had for Transformers and they fixed a crap load of Rhino errors. They even went back and fixed errors after the season 1 boxset was released.
Got my set today about 5 minutes ago it shipped on the 16th. Must say this is a amazing looking set just from the outside. Promised a friend I would take pictures of it as I was opening but the camera battery is dead so not gotten around to removing the plastic yet.
I live in Delaware incase anyone is wondering.
Edit: Just opened it and to my surprise the place that holds the DVD's has come off . The adhesive looks to have not been strong enough .
Wow - that looks awful. I'm almost scared to open mine.
Edit - I opened mine and, for a change, everything looks pretty much perfect. However, after seeing your pic and getting some hands on with the design, I can definitely see how that happened. I think I'm going to keep the DVDs out of the footlocker, just to be on the safe side. It will be interesting to hear if any other sets arrived in that condition and if this is something to really be concerned about.
Outside of that possible "functional" issue, I will say that, IMO, this G.I. Joe footlocker is much more impressive looking than the Transformers Matrix of Leadership set. Not that I'm trying to say anything negative about the MOL set, but everything about this G.I. Joe set just looks and feels better. The footlocker case seems to be of higher quality than the MOL box, the "console" look/graphics when you open the footlocker is ultra-impressive, I much prefer the cases in the G.I. Joe set to the overlapping disc cases in the MOL set (I still curse whoever the first person was that came up with overlappig disc cases), and then there's the disc art... The disc art is a complete home run.

I just got mine and opened it up...same thing....the carboard holding the discs is ripped down the entire right corner.....forget super glue, this thing is going back. The invoice had the damaged or defective return address.
That sucks. It's really too bad if this ends up being a widespread problem.
And you'll find the worst thing about ordering online via Shout is that you are footing the bill to try to get a good set if they don't get it right the first time. It's the luck of the draw and you're gambling that it's gonna arrive in perfect condition (and, IMO, given the work that went into the presentation of these sets, nothing less should be expected). And these large sets aren't exactly cheap to send back. Many online retailers will either pay for return shipping or reimburse you when it's a product/packaging error. No such mention of that when I dealt with sending back my Matrix of Leadership box when it arrived damaged. I paid about $11 (and I am betting this G.I. Joe set weighs more), although I sent it back Priority, hoping they would turn it around quickly.

Just received the footlocker set, and I am greatly impressed. No problems that I can see, and the presentation and care that's gone into it are fantastic. As with the Matrix set, I greatly look forward to going through this.
I think the problem could have been solved by riveting (though that may have caused other issues) or something along those lines the holder to the flip up part before putting the plastic thing on the otherside instead of using glue. It appears what happened is the holder was warped a little and it caused the glue to not stick right. Gently bent it back and put some super glue on it just going to let it set overnight before putting the disc back in. Mine is not in that bad of shape only real damage is to a spot no one will ever see which to me is not worth the time and cost of shipping back to them. Other then the issue I am finding it to be a very nice set. Nice hard chipboard box with metal around it , book and dogtag USB are good looking. I also like the spot for the Movie in the second disc book.
Probably start watching tomorrow after I cut the grass.
I recieved my set around 8:30 this morning. The mail has NEVER come that early before.
Set arrive intact, no damage inside or out. I'm reluctant to put the digi-stacks back into the footlocker, out of fear that the weight will cause the glue to fail.
I've watched the episode "No Place Like Springfield; Part 2", The edit to Springfield has been upheld. It shows Shipwrecks daughter with the bazooka then cuts to both her and Marla turning into piles of synthoid goo. The "drip" reference is missing as well.
My only real complaint, is that the digi-stacks are a real pain in the butt to remove the DVD's from and it wouldn't surprise me if people start reporting that they've snapped/cracked discs while trying to remove them.
BrandonJF, out of curisoity when did you send your Matrix set off to be replaced, and have you gotten it back yet? I'm hoping when i send my Joe set off it wont be a freaking month or more before i get a new one. If the holder had just come unglued thats one thing i could re-glue but the entire corner of the dvd holder is ripped all the way down and, the entire holder is glued fine its just ripped entirely down on the right side. Shout should re-imberse for return shipping if the product is damaged.....i paid shipping to get it mailed to me...not for me to recieve a damaged product and then have to pay to ship it back to them to replace it on my dime for something that is their responsiblity.

I have literally just received confirmation that the masters we used are identical to the original broadcast masters. Rhino did not touch these. In terms of edits, I can't speak to them one way or the other. I know that a confrontation between a bazooka toting child and gun wielding wife prior to being melted is there. I was shown a video on YouTube of the "edit" which removed the daughter holding the bazooka entirely, which is not the case here. As far as the line of dialogue being kept or edited, I have no idea. I'm not nearly as familiar with these episodes as I was with Transformers.
EDIT: Correction. I was sent just another email saying simply that this is the version of some of these episodes that the powers that be want out there. If there are "offensive" edits, this may be why. I cannot argue with the powers, gang.
As far as the defective boxes, this is really bad news. Our came in completely intact, so I was unaware a problem like this existed. In fact, I just examined my own copy and it is still in good shape. I will look into it as soon as possible. This is unacceptable.
Yeah, I agree. I honestly didn't put up much of a fight or question it - I just wanted to get it settled as quickly as possible, although I will not be happy if the replacement set comes with anything wrong with it. I've always liked the Amazon method where they instantly send you a replacement and then you have 30 days to send the defective item back at their expense.
I sent the Matrix set back last Friday and they got it back on 7/13. I haven't heard anything or received a replacement yet (I was hoping they'd send it Priority like the first one). I sent something off to that customer service e-mail today to confirm they received it and to see what the expected turnaround time would be.
It was odd that they required no RMA or anything (like every other Shout product, but these sets are all going through a 3rd party), just the order number in the shipping label. I just hope it goes smoothly.

Wow - stepped outside to find the box on my doorstep! I'm in awe - everything is perfect, and my 2-year old daughter lit up and said "Ohhhhh e-i-joe daddy! E-i-joe!"
This is a very nice set, indeed! I've just opened mine, and aside from the inner flap wanting to open with the lid, everything is as it should, i.e. no disc holders falling off. I do appreciate being able to watch multi-part episodes seamlessly, with no "next time..." or "previously..." segments. However, and I'm sure this is a limitation of the masters given, title cards still appear between the episodes of "Pyramid of Darkness" and "Arise, Serpentor, Arise!" A minor annoyance certainly, but it would be nice to not have those titles or "To Be Continued..." between these episodes.
I've only had a chance to watch the Friedman 3-part interview, but that was very nice. That man knows his stuff!
The biggest plus is to have all the "lost" episodes that Rhino never got around to releasing in great quality in this set. Now the Joe collection is nearly complete.
Get rid of the title cards in those few episodes, axe the bumpers, and attach the PSAs back to their respective episodes and to me this would be perfect!
As stated earlier I am one of the unforunate ones who got a defective Joe set today. It obviously has the return address, etc that came with it if it was damaged, defective, etc. You said in your post earlier today that you were going to look into it as soon as possible. My question is do I go on and send it back to the return address provided, or do wait for you to look into and get back to us? I guess my second question is what specifically are you going to look into it about? I mean anything that would change where we sent it back to be replaced? I just hope this doesnt turn into a fiasco trying to get a replacement for this. thanks man.

Can anyone else confirm this to be the case? Have you checked your disc for defects? I ask because I sent my season 1.1 set back to Amazon for replacement. What alerted me to check my disc was a missing bit of dialog when Cobra Commander was talking with Destro in one of the Pyramid of Darkness episodes. The disc had a deep scratch in just the right spot that the "edit" seemed logical, but I knew something was missing.
If it turns out that dialog from certain episodes is removed for political correctness reasons than I am not rewarding this behavior by buying these products.
I'll put up with two timbers in MASS because for the life of me I can't remember if it was broadcast that way or not, I'll put up with altering the robotopus and even the different coloring of the water in that fight scene (I know, the more pronunced green is probably the way it is on the film, but the broadcast had more blue than green). However, removing dialog and scenes is disgraceful and is far from the goal of restoration.
Thinking of controversial dialog, is dusty's use of the phrase Camel Jockey still in The Invaders?

I've watched the episode "No Place Like Springfield; Part 2", The edit to Springfield has been upheld. It shows Shipwrecks daughter with the bazooka then cuts to both her and Marla turning into piles of synthoid goo. The "drip" reference is missing as well.
The edit to "There's No Place Like Springfield; Part 2 was done back in the 80's, after the inital airing of the episode. All airings of the episode and home video releases have since been edited. This was an edit done by Sunbow itself, not Rhino.
As for any dialouge edits due to political correctness, I hope no such edits have been made.

Hi Brian,
I received my package of G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero Complete Series Collector's Set in the mail on Sat. July 17. It came in brand new condition and had no damages. When is G.I. Joe 1987 Movie going to be released by Shout! factory? Thank you.
Just curious about other peoples sets. Did anybody else have problems with the digipacks? While I appreciate that the disks came secured, I cracked a one of the disk holders trying to get the disk out carefully. I also had the second set of discs come off the cardboard backing. I know that cracking the package was my fault but I was surprised to have the second set of disks fall into my lap. Hopefully everybody else's set comes with out such problems.
The right side of the cardboard holder that holds both digistacks on my was completely torn, so its getting sent back, but i checked and the discs are notoriously difficult to get out of the disc holders, so was my brothers, and others have complained on here as well i think abou the discs being difficult to remove.....i'm thinking about using razor blades to shave them down when i get a replacement set....hopefully....

I'm very happy with the GI Joe: Complete Set; everything inside is intact and in great shape. But is the exterior supposed to look a bit beat up? There are a few scratches here and there, on the sides and bottom. It sort of goes along with the weathered look of the footlocker and they're fairly minor, so I don't mind (much). Just curious to know if anyone else's looks the same.
Also, I'm assuming the missing space for GI Joe: The Movie means Shout! plans to eventually release it?
Finally, I love Shout! as a company and think you, Mr. Ward, must have one of the best jobs. Is there any information about working for Shout! and other companies that produce DVDs? It always struck me as one side of the movie business not many people give much thought to, but always intrigued me. Someone works with the filmmakers overseeing what special features will be on a disc, and there are people who actually do the nuts & bolts of menu creation and whatnot. I want to be one of those people! So any information would be helpful. Thanks very much!

Okay, we know it's you, jmodlin210 a.k.a. Jonny..a.k.a. "AngryJonny"
Because of the hubs being so tight and hard to remove the disc I ended up just taking the disc out of the digistacks and putting them in some extra thinpak cases I had laying around. Being very careful it took me about 4 minutes to get each disc off the hubs. Probably going to order some multi-disc cases and make my own covers eventually.
I took some pictures of the set if anyone is interested they are located here http://yfrog.com/0b1000052bjx .

Since I’m an enormous Joe fan I wanted to put in my two cents on the set. Got to open it last night and for the most part I’m pleased. This set feels like it’s worth around the $145 price point. I really like the booklet and I really like the disc art. As I am 29 yrs of age, when I think back to the Joe of the 80’s I think of the cartoon, the action figures and those cool cardbacks, and the marvel comics…all so retro, and seeing the cardbacks on the disc art is such a nice touch. I think the booklet is pretty nice too with that retro touch. Even the plastic top is kinda cool for what it is…I’m sure the kids of us older folks that grew up with the 80s Joe will just love to look and poke at it for hours.
But I do have some cons. I think the box construction is somewhat solid, however, the sleeve that holds those dvds just feels plain weak (and my condolences to you trustkill01 on your ripped set as I know you are a huge fan and have been waiting forever for this release) and I’m actually going to try and remedy the issue on my set by applying some superglue since the sleeve does pull away enough for me to apply some. It’s fairly evident if I continue to open and close the case that the sleeve will fall off. The other thing that is just bizarre is how the discs are in the cases. The Transformers set had such nice disc holders, albeit somewhat fragile, and the disc just came right out, but this Joe set….I’m not usually a cussing man, but I wanted to cuss a blue streak trying to get these dvds out! I had to get tweezers to assist me in my efforts. On a lighter note, I’m sure no one will have a problem with loose discsJ
But the thing that bothers me the most are/is the supposed PC edit(s). I’ve watched the part from There's No Place Like Springfield: Part II twice in the past 12 hours when Shipwreck enters the home and confronts an armed synthoid wife and daughter. On the dvd you see a long shot (from Shipwreck’s p.o.v.) of the wife (holding laser rifle) and child (holding bazooka) when he enters the den, then you see a shot of the wife raising a laser rifle, then you see a shot of the bird, then it shows the wife dissolved. In the original broadcast a side shot of the daughter is shown holding the bazooka and uttering the "drip" phrase. From what I can tell this was what was originally broadcasted. Someone needs to correct me if I am wrong. And I got to say, it really doesn’t matter cause it’s just a second or two of missing footage, but what gets me is the supposed PC editing. I know this isn’t one bit Brian’s fault but it bothers me that this is the world we live in where fear of being sued trumps every thing. I understand that Sunbow edited the episode after it originally aired (so I’ve read) and so every thing after that has not had the full original broadcast version. All in all, there’s no point in really discussing it, this sort of thing just drives me more to hate the idea of PC’ness and rally against it and this is where I am going to end this because I’m in the minority.
B. Ward, I commend you a job very well done...and the bad taste in my mouth, I blame on our society.

I hadn't even tried to get a disc out when I had originally posted... the set looked so nice, I didn't even get around to the actual disc content piece. But, after reading these comments about issues getting the discs out of the cases, I had to go give it a shot.
Honestly, this is pretty extreme and, IMO, a pretty serious issue. I usually love these types of cases/trays. What is different here that makes it near impossible to get the discs out? The disc lies deeper than normal? Did anyone during the production process actually try to remove a disc or was it just like what I did originally and say "cool looking set! Pass!" It's kinda hard to press down on a hub without smashing everything below it and cracking the slimline cases (which will crack pretty easily). I couldn't believe it when a previous poster said it took them 4 minutes to get out each disc. Now I'm thinking that poster is highly skilled to only take 4 minutes!
Given the fact that I don't feel safe leaving the discs in the box out of fear that the sleeve will rip off and I have to fight to get each disc out (I still haven't succeeded - I'm afraid of breaking something), my initial "wow" factor is wearing off.... I'm starting to wish I would've just picked up the individual releases. This set is pretty to look at, but I'm not sure it's gonna be great to actually use.
BrandonJF, I feel your pain. Tweezers helped me (pushing in the little prongs and working it) and the more I would take a disc on and off the easier it became. Even a fingernail helped. But yea, don't press down on a case with the other dvd cases below, put your hand behind the tray and work it that way, as you're probably doing.
It is baffling me since the TF set had really easy to use cases. I wish they were more like the XBOX360 cases or something because those are so easy to mess with and they always keep the disc on.

I will address other questions and comments in a few minutes, but thought I'd address this "major" issue first. I won't lie. I think this is a gross exaggeration. I've been a DVD consumer since 1998 and have had trouble getting DVDs out of some packaging. I'm also usually very picky about my packaging. When we were choosing the packaging, I basically tried to break those stacks with reasonable wear. And I have NEVER had a problem removing the discs from the plastic. In fact, I did it several times this weekend because of the complaints on this forum. And I just did it again!
Put pressure on the center. Not too much. But don't feel bad about doing it. The discs pop right out.
"Put pressure on the center. Not too much. But don't feel bad about doing it."
OH BRAIN! This is almost too much for me to handle. First off, i always put pressure on the center. That is a must, and to do it any other way would be a total waste of time and certainly would not produce the desired result! And i NEVER feel bad about doing it. In fact i feel good. Reeeeeeeeal good, if you catch what i am saying. If not, let me put it this way: The brain-babies are yours for the taking.
I've got about 2500 individual titles on DVD and Blu-Ray(not to mention hundreds I've traded in), many of which are tv series with multiple DVDs. These are the hardest DVDs to remove from the case that I have encountered. I'm not prone to exaggeration and initially figured that was what was going on when I perused this thread. It's not. If you are able to simply remove the disc from the tray with your set, than there is something different between yours and mine. Granted, I have only tried disc 1 so far - I just tried it again and watch the disc flex to uncomfortable levels before giving up. I am convinced that there is zero exaggeration going on in this thread based on my experience.
I have put pressure on the center. The discs do not "pop right out". The center hubs do not even depress - there is no "give" to them. If yours do, then you have a different tray design than what I've got. What I have is a "hard" center hub that does not depress at all. The closest I have come to getting disc one out is to lift up on the top corners - I got some crackling sound as I thought it was going to go over the top of the hub, but I didn't quite make it. I might be willing to be more forceful were it not for the thin slim tray which will easily break.
The only hope I have of using these DVDs is that they get easier to remove after the first time out of the hubs - if I can ever remove one. I've had a couple other discs that were "tight" to get out that were easier to remove after the first time. I'm not going to risk breaking it, though, which will easily happen. I still have yet to get disc 1 out. The person that only took 4 minutes per tray (although, that was with using tweezer for assistance) is doing better than I am.

The discs are held very securely, but not overly hard to get out. On these types of packaging (Paramount has the same for their remastered Star Trek the Original Series Collection), just lift up one edge with your fingers, press in the center to stabilize the packaging, and then wiggle the disc around from side to side a bit. It pops off nicely. I've done this on every disc in the set, some multiple times, and never thought I was going to break a disc or not get the disc out entirely.

Yea, this is how I worked it too. To combat the noise of the cracking I used tweezers to push in one of the prongs as I worked the disc around. Releasing some of the pressure helped to ease it out.
I guess we Joe fans that LOVE us some Joe just don't want to hurt our sets:) So we're being careful.

Just so everyone is aware, the sound you're hearing is NOT cracking of plastic (unless, of course, you're lifting from the outside edge and pulling back, like a wishbone). The sound you're hearing is plastic against plastic.
Brian,
I want to say thank you for producing and releasing G.I. Joe: A real American Hero The Complete Series Collector's Set on DVD! When are they going to release G.I. Joe: The Animated Movie 1987 by Shout! Factory? It has an extra spot in the complete series of G.I. Joe for G.I. Joe The Movie. I am looking forward of a Shout! Factory release of G.I. Joe: The Movie.
True.
And as Modlin says....thanks Brian. It is truly amazing to have all 95 episodes in one pop like this.

I did finally have success with disc one by doing a variation of that. I had to lift up more than one edge - it was kinda inching it up until it finally got close to the top. Even then, that hub did not want to let go, but it finally popped off. Still, I managed to get it off relatively quickly that time (less than, but close to, a minute).

i got my GI JOE Footlocker of Leadership today. It looks GrEat! Sadly, i too had a problem with the packaging. When i removed the gelatinous outer film the entire set burst into flames. Is this normal? What the hell was the gelatinous film anyway? I have washed my hands for 3 hours now and i cannot get it off. The discs are a little burnt from the fire, but i can still follow the episodes with a little guesswork. Snake Eyes is the one with 17 arms, right? The fire put a hole in my carpet, and my dog is now hairless, but other than that everything looks great!
For God's sake, man, stop asking the same damn question about GI Joe: The Movie! For your reference, here's Brian Ward's comments on the matter three months ago (edited for just the pertinent info). As for the movie...while it would make sense to capitalize on the release of the upcoming live-action film, we don't want to confuse folks in anyway, so we're holding back the release of the animated movie until people have had an opportunity to purchase the new movie. Makes sense for all three Hasbro, Shout!, and Paramount.
For those having issues with removing the discs, visit http://www.shoutfactory.com/video/wip/14/gi_joe_dvd_tray.aspx.
As for G.I. Joe: The Movie... We haven't officially begun on the actual production of the disc, yet. I'm doing some preliminary research into the available elements. For those that have asked, I have already inquired about film elements for the movie so that it may be remastered. This is not a promise. I'm just letting you know that I've begun the process of looking into it.
The movie was not included in this set for a couple of reasons. The most obvious is that the "movie" is not an official part of the "series." Second most obvious is that neither Hasbro nor Shout! Factory want to confuse those buying the live-action movie later this year. We don't want people buying one thinking they're getting the other. I know those of you on the forum know the difference, but this was a decision made for those that are a little less informed. Therefore, we'll be releasing the film later.
That being said, for those that have the original Rhino release of the film and wish to include it here, they are more than welcome.
Secondly, I was pointed to a review that suggests this isn't a "complete series" set because of the missing DiC series and the film. Something that should be made clear is that in Hasbro's eyes, it certainly is a complete series set. The DiC series is not considered to be part of G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero's run by Sunbow. Think of it more as the contemporary Battlestar Galactica to the '70s original. Sunbow produced the series until 1986. DiC picked up G.I. Joe in 1989. They are separate series that share the same name and a handful of elements. As for the inclusion of the movie being required to make it a "complete series", I should point out that Firefly: The Complete Series does not include Serenity, Sex and the City: The Complete Series does not include the movie, the Star Trek: The Next Generation - The Complete Series doesn't include the feature films. This is the complete television series.
Awesome video! Maybe you could do one showing us how to use the episode guide book? The pages go which way? ;)
Look forward to getting my set. Was there ever an update on the Comic commercials question? My apologies if I missed the answer. If not included as a stand alone bonus in this set, hopefully they'll be added to the movie release later.
Thanks again for putting it all together. Look forward to watching with my kids.
The comic commercials were a legal thing. Because the comic book was Marvel and not Hasbro, we were told we could use footage from the commercials within the featurettes, but could not include the actual commercials as standalone bonus features.
We're not the same Jonny; I just joined the board yesterday!
But thanks for the information regarding the movie.

Yeah, I think I see the difference between how you're getting them out and what I'm doing. It seems like you're actually lifting the disc from the bottom up with your finger. You would be correct in your assumption that some of us are trying to be too gentle. As I tried to remove disc 2, it seems like that is the way these trays are designed since the bottom of the disc is actually even with the dips in the tray. Disc 1 allowed me to just get my finger on the edge of the disc and lift it up. So far, I can't do that with disc 2. I would have to dig it out and lift it up with my finger lifting up from the underside of the disc.
Is that what the intention is and what you had to do in that video? I've just never had to touch the bottom of a DVD and get fingerprints on it in order to remove it from a case/tray before. Honestly, if I have to touch the bottom of the disc to get it out, it's staying in. I'm not 100% sure that's what you had to do from that angle, but it sure looks like it... and it would make sense given that's the only way I think disc 2 is coming out of my package.
EDIT - I got disc 2 out! I was able to get the edge to come up without getting under the disc. But, it in no way pops out like yours does. When you push down on the center hub, does it give at all? Mine doesn't seem too. And I've tried being less than gentle with it.
I know it sounds like we have mental problems trying to wrestle discs out of trays. I swear, I do have opposable thumbs. :)
I will say that you and Shout are probably the only companies out there that would actually thow up a video like that. haha... I definitely appreciate the effort.

Yeah, I had no idea what that review was even talking about. I'm not sure I'm even aware of the 1989 series. I'll have to go look up some info on it. The dig at not including the movie was silly, although I wonder if that comes up by your even giving space to stick the movie. It might make one think it belongs and you didn't include it since there is an empty space for it. Personally, I agree that it does not belong in a complete series set. Heck, the Transformers movie doesn't belong in the TF set, either, and it actually ties directly into the series' continuity.

The center hub doesn't actually give. It creates leverage. So you're literally holding down the plastic tray as you're lifting the disc up over it. Should work better, in general, if you approach it from that angle.
AHAHAAHAHHAHA! I have not laughed so hard in a long time. These last 10 post had me rolling!!!!
You guys are hilarious! From the guy asking (sarcastically) if we can get a video on how to use the booklet to the guy asking Modlin to stop asking about the movie AND THEN HE DOES AGAIN......it' just awesome!
Anyways, I sat down with my Joe discs tonight and got every one of them out...with relative ease. I figured it out, however, just check the video Brian posted. I used both index fingers and a thumb in the center and popped it pretty fast - you have to put some pressure on the pull but the key are the two index fingers. I own about 350 dvds and for sure these have been the most challenging for me but now I know how it's done.

Brian,
Are you working on G.I. Joe: The Movie yet? Is it going to get released end of 2009 or early 2010? Thank you.
By the way, the discs are seriously easy to remove from the trays, just like the video demonstrates. Literally takes a second. It's fairly intuitive, which makes me worry about some who are having so much trouble. Stay away from really complex things, like combination locks, okay?
Still wondering if anyone else's footlocker has some weathering, like minor scratches, and if this is part of the look.
What are the odds that two guys visit the same site, ask pretty much the same question(s), and spell their names THE SAME WAY?...I guess it's possible, but highly unlikely. Jonny and "Angry Jonny" are the same guy...c'mon.

I know I posted this twice. I just got my confirmation email from Shout! saying my package was shipped on the 17th. I made my purchase on the 9th. I hope this puts some people at ease =)
Yeah, I'll try real hard to do just that! Maybe... just maybe, some of these discs are in there tighter than others. Can you possibly imagine??? Again, I have 2500 individual DVD titles. I have had experience taking discs out of every conceivable packaging imaginable. The set I have is the most difficult set of discs I've ever had to remove by a long shot. You aren't getting the first two discs I've tried in my set out as quickly as Brian did in that video.
All of these sets are not created equal. Some have inner disc holders that fall apart. Some have plastic trays where the discs are difficult to remove. And some have special variant versions with scratches on the footlocker. I do not have the scratched-up-footlocker version.

I definitely have plenty of sets where the discs just pop out as you're demonstrating. For some reason, the first couple I have tried have just been a bit of work. But, I have successfully removed a couple, so I'm not too worried about it. I at least have more confidence that I can get these out without damaging the disc/cases.
I swear those of us whining about removing the discs aren't crazy - there are only so many ways to remove a disc from a tray and I've gone through them all, including doing it exactly the way you did it (although, I do have my cases lying flat instead of at an angle in my hand). It still may be a case of, as you say, people being too gentle. I'm just too nervous to risk breakage - especially as I await a replacement Transformers set. I got really lucky with this G.I. Joe set being in perfect condition. And I'd rather have discs that are tough to get out than discs floating around.
So, that's enough from me about disc removal - I actually popped in a disc and watched an episode along with one of the supplements. The ep looked and sounded great. I'm looking forward to checking more out...

Anyone having problems with the DVDs freezing-up at 49 seconds in, at the end of the Hasbro intro? It seems to stop on Disc 1 and 4, that's all I have tried so far. If I hit stop, then play it will start playing the 1st episode, so then I can navigate to the menus. So I can make it work, but it's a little annoying.
If it's happening with multiple discs, I'd say it's a compatibility issue with your DVD player. I would try another player and see if it happens there.
Well, I got the email saying my sets of Transformers and G.I. JOE were shipped out on July 17th. I'm hoping tomorrow the sets will arrive. I wasn't sure which one I would watch first, but as of late I've been totally in a G.I. JOE mood. Watching DVD-rips of my G.I. JOE ebay set I got about 7yrs ago. I was never a fan of the Rhino set because it added sound effects and such. To me there is no reason to ruin a good thing. Either way, as much as the new G.I. JOE movie looks horrible to me, I knew that the movie coming out itself would pave the way for a complete Sunbow set. And to those asking for the D.i.C. set, I think your memory is doing you a injustice. I have those on fan-made DVDs, and the quality of the show is horrible. It started going downhill with the first mini-series "Operation: Dragonfire", then continued to plummet with Season 1, then went to total hell with Season 2. Let it die. No reason to tarnish the current set. And to the G.I. JOE animated movie, I say the Rhino Edition was good, will definitly pick yours up when you release it. But what about that latest show? G.I. JOE Resolute? Any plans for you guys to release that on DVD? That show was sweet. Wish a new series would've came from it. But oh well. Keep up the good work and when my set finally gets here, I will be writing a review on it. Yo Joe!
After reading about the DiC Joe series here, I watched the opening sequence on YouTube and was a bit stunned at the difference between that and the Sunbow series. In fact, I clearly did not watch the DiC series when it originally aired because it didn't look at all familiar. (Anyone remember whenever the DiC logo would appear at the very end of one of their shows, a little girl's voice would say, "Deeek"? My friends and I used to make fun of that.)
As for Resolute, it was written by one of my favorite comic book writers, Warren Ellis. Love his stuff!

To each their own, but I just want to say that there are a lot of folks that would like to see the DiC Joe series on DVD, even if it's crap. I for one hope the Sunbow series sells extremely well and Hasbro gets the DiC series rights and gets Shout! to produce it. This is my hope. First day buy for me, crap and all.

I noticed in the review on the Digital Bits that he says you have to hold the lid of the set up to remove the discs. You actually don't. The set was designed so that if you pull the lid up and pull toward you slightly, you can continue to lift it all the way and it will rest on itself. I would demonstrate with another video, but I'm in San Diego preparing for Comic-Con.

Hey everyone, just got the joe box set a little while ago. I was very surprised it was on the doorstep today as I never received a delivery e-mail. I guess I cant complain though since it was the street date. I am very pleased with the set and the overall attention given to the project. I must say however that this set despite the hard casing exterior is a little on the delicate side internally. I was lucky enough to not have the undercasing tear problem like some. These discs definately take more effort in extracting from their casing. To avoid any future war between myself and these holders I have placed them all in zipper books along with the discs from the matrix set as well. I know many people will not want to store them this way but I just don't want to risk any future damage to any part of this great set. All in all I still love the set. Thank you Brian and Shout Factory for bringing us another childhood favorite. Good luck to all with their new sets.
Granted the DIC series wasn't as strong as the Sunbow series, it has it's moments. Operation Dragon Fire, imho, was as good a miniseries as any of the Sunbow ones. Granted you have to overlook the fact that Lady Jaye and some of the other Joes seem to look younger and some voices are different.
There were some things the series should have explained; such as Destro's mask now being Gold and the new coloring of Serpentor. Comic book readers had an advantage there-I wasn't one of them-and yes it was a retcon moment when Cobra Commander passed off his new style uniform as one of his old ones.
The thing that bothered me the most about the series is the changes they made to Scarlet. They turned her into the stereotypical shopaholic woman. Why Hasbro?
The best thing about the Dic series, they did away with Serpentor.
COBRAAAAH
And to keep things relevant, I got my replacement Season 1.1 from Amazon. Snake Eyes breakdancing on stage neve looked better.
I like Cobra Commander as much as anyone, but I did think Serpentor was a "better" leader. Yes, he was prone to fits of rage (if only cobra had gotten Sun Tzu's DNA) but he was more charismatic and less of a blunderer.Oh how I wish Sunbow would've been allowed to make one more season, if for nothing else, to give G.I. Joe a proper series finish. DIC version is an abomination, and NOT G.I. Joe in anyway.

Well, I got both the Transformers Set and G.I. JOE Sets today. I must say, job well done. Regarding the effort it takes to take the discs out, you people need to relax. I had no trouble. Yes, the more you take the discs out the easier it will be, but all you have to do is grab one side, push and twist. Like any other DVD Set I have. So no worries there. Thank you Shout! Factory. I just received BOTH Transformers Matrix of Leadership and G.I. JOE DVD sets, and I've got to say, they're great. Both sets are are far better in audio and particularly video quality than the Rhino editions. I haven't checked out the bonus features yet, but so far, these sets are SIMPLY AWESOME!
Thanks to B. Ward and everyone else involved in the production of this set. You really out did yourselves. Hopefully these sets will serve as examples of how a sets are supposed to be done!
While I can understand the logic behind not releasing the G.I. JOE Animated Movie on DVD for fear of some consumers mistaking it for the Live-Action one, I must protest. It is the consumers job to research what they buy. While the Rhino Edition is a good barebones DVD per say, I cannot wait to see what Shout! can do with it and how they plan on presenting it. Just my two cents. And I must say again, Job Well Done on the G.I. JOE & Transformers Box Sets. Can't thank you enough! Sic Semper Tyrannis
Just wanted to say that I think my earlier post might have come off a little negative in regards to the cases and ease of removing them. I myself had no real problem with these, but I did have to use more force than what is typical for most dvd's. I do feel bad for those that have had problems and or damages with theirs. As a huge fan of this series as well as transformers, I am more than pleased with the quality put into both sets. I would very strongly recomend this to any fan. They are the real deal you've been waiting for. Thanks again Brian Ward and Shout Factory for all the time and energy put forth. Prowl3710
I got both the Transformers and GI Joe complete sets today. Like I said in the TF thread: great stuff. I am thrilled with both.

Ditto. It was terrible (well, I remember "Cookin' in the kitchen with Cobraaa..." sung by Cobra Commander, the only memorable part of that series), but I'd still get it if Shout! Released it. Do look into it Brian Ward! Great work!
Got my Vol 1.1 set today! I have NEVER seen such amazing box art before. They're a sight to behold. I could stare at them all day. Great job! From Punky Brewster to Simon & Simon... Shout are doing retro tv proud!
They messed up on one thing though, they say, and I quote, "By the time you run through all of the disc's special features, you have every single Public Service Announcement..." this is inaccurate. There are only 27 PSAs on the complete set and 7 are missing.
By Saturday or Monday, once I get my hands on the Rhino Joe release of the movie, I'll post the 7 that are missing with their respective names. The Rhino movie had 25 of the 34 PSAs on the disc and I need to check if the same 25 are on the complete set...even though I'm 99.9% sure they are.
I hope to find online those missing 7 so Brian can maybe put them on the Shout! release of the Joe movie as a bonus
Brian has already stated that 25 PSAs that appear on the Rhino version of the movie also appear on the Shout! release.
I'm 95% certain that the PSAs were shown at the end of every Sunbow episode during the USA Network run, so perhaps the missing PSAs could be taken off the USA Network masters, if they still exist. I have no idea what tv/cable stations do with their tapes once they no longer have the rights to broadcast a series.

Not to be too nit-picky, Brian said, quote, "I don't have a copy of Rhino's movie, but I'm assuming so. These are the 25 Hasbro has in their possession. In addition, we found two hidden on the episode masters not included in their collection, so we pulled those and added them to the list."
So, I'm going to find out for sure. I really have no doubts that the same 25 that are on the Rhino movie are 25 of the same ones on the complete set. However, "assuming" is the key word here. Hopefully I or someone can find links online or someone will come forward and say they have the remaining few on vhs once I (or someone else) can nail down the exact ones that have never graced a dvd.

I just viewed the PSAs on the Rhino release of the Joe movie....and guess what....there were two PSAs on the Rhino movie that are NOT on the complete set. Now, I know me and maybe someone else cares. Fine. I didn't assume, and I checked, and yes the 25 are not all the same ones on the Shout set. The two missing that are on the Rhino release and not on the Shout release are Barbecue: Don't pull the fire alarm unless there's a fire and Gung-Ho: Girls can skateboard better too.
So, on dvd there are 29 Joe PSAs and the FIVE that are missing that have never graced a dvd (to my knowledge) are the following: Cross Country & Beach Head: Protect your head
Flint: Don't blame your brother
Lifeline: Don't eat junk food
Ripcord: Maybe you stink at basketball because you need glasses
Shipwreck: Don't run away from home
That's some fine detective work there. A follow up question for you: Which are the ones that are on the Shout set and not on the Rhino set (and which disc if you happen to know that, too)?

Cutter - Have a ump ref your baseball games 7. Deep Six - Don't swim when it's storming 8. Deep Six - Wear a life jacket 9. Doc - Don't take drugs without your parents there 10. Dusty - Put reflectors on your bike or be runover 11. Flint - Don't get mad at your goalie for letting in a bad goal 12. Footloose - How to stop a nose bleed 13. Gung-Ho - Girls can skateboard (better) too 14. Lady Jaye - It's okay to be a chicken if your smart 15. Mutt - Don't pet strange dogs 16. Quick Kick - Don't be in a hurry to build your tree house 17. The ones in RED are the two that are not on the Shout! Set: Barbeque - Don't pull the fire alarm unless there's a fire
Gung-Ho - Girls can skateboard (better) too
The ones that are on the Shout! Set that are not on the Kid Rhino set are: Roadblock - Don't tell a stranger where you live Leatherneck - Don't stay out all day in the sun or you'll turn into a lobster Dial Tone - Don't paint your bike in the garage General Hawk - Don't try to beat the train
So, the five that remain that have never been released to dvd (to my knowledge) are the following: Cross Country & Beach Head - Protect your head Flint - Don't blame your brother Lifeline - Don't eat junk food Ripcord - Maybe you stink at basketball because you need glasses Shipwreck - Don't run away from home
If Shout! were to release G.I. Joe: The Movie and wanted to have all PSAs on Shout! Factory Joe releases they would have to include these seven: Barbeque - Don't pull the fire alarm unless there's a fire
Gung-Ho - Girls can skateboard (better) too Cross Country & Beach Head - Protect your head Flint - Don't blame your brother Lifeline - Don't eat junk food Ripcord - Maybe you stink at basketball because you need glasses Shipwreck - Don't run away from home
In conclusion, Barbeque - Don't pull the fire alarm unless there's a fire and Gung-Ho - Girls can skateboard (better) too are on dvd and can be added to the Shout! release of the movie, but the other five would have to be found. I’m going to try my best to locate them but it may be a futile attempt. I did not record these to VHS back in the 80s so I do not have such resources to pull from; maybe others that read this will come forward and say that they have these last five and would be willing to pass them on to Brian Ward.

That's some fine detective work there. A follow up question for you: Which are the ones that are on the Shout set and not on the Rhino set (and which disc if you happen to know that, too)?
"zipper books" are just a nickname I sometimes use for a case which holds dvd, cd, or really any type of media in disc form. They usually have a zipper along the edge as a means of opening and closing them. There are many brands but I find I like the ones made by case logic the most. Most wal-mart, target, or best buys have them. Just check any stores near you similar to these.

What are "zipper books" ? and where can I purchase them? I am interested in these.
http://generalsjoes.com/2009/07/24/g-i-joe-the-movie-confirmed-for-release-by-shout-in-2010/ that has the information of Shout! Factory releasing G.I. Joe: The Movie as a standalone DVD in 2010.
We’ve spoken about the blank slot in the 17-disc Complete Series set during my review, but wasn’t really sure if it was just an Easter Egg, a mistake, or something there was plans for in the future. Well, a friend of GeneralsJoes stopped by the Shout! Factory booth in San Diego yesterday, and we’re happy to report that Shout! confirmed they are working to release G.I. Joe: The Movie as a standalone DVD in 2010!
It was nice to see those again! I think it's time for the powers-that-be at Shout to get a hold of the original uploader to see if they have higher quality versions. There should be little reason not to include the remaining PSAs on the eventual Movie release, provided the final three can be located....

So I've done research and so far I've found 3 of the missing 5.
