RE: Complete Series sets of Transformers and G.I. Joe this summer?
I prefer my tv shows in easily digestible volume / season sets, so I’ll be sticking with the individual releases. It’s still good news though. Any retro dvd release is a worthy release in my books.
RE: Complete Series sets of Transformers and G.I. Joe this summer?
This is both good and bad. Good because this way we know we'll get the whole series & won't be left hanging. Bad if they only release season 1 and then the complete series without additional individual seasons. Seems like they won't be doing this though.
There are only a handful of complete series I would buy right off the bat. Transformers & GI Joe aren't two of them. I feel more comfortable buying the first seasons and seeing if they hold up to my memories & expectations. Complete series are usually too expensive for me to invest in without knowing if I would fully enjoy the set. Thankfully it looks like Shout! is going the way of Time Life and offering both complete series & individual seasons.
Please bring "Starman" the 1986-87 tv series to DVD.
RE: Complete Series sets of Transformers and G.I. Joe this summer?
I do hope they eventually release the back 15 of season 2 of G.I. Joe seperately for those that don't want to buy the box set and are just looking to complete their Joe collection. So will the Joe boxset contain the two miniseries? I would assume so. I wouldn't consider it complete without them. Even though I have all the Rhino releases, I might buy the box set depending on the price, extras, and if it will be available in stores like Target and Best Buy. I hope Shout! puts the correct openings with the episodes, because some of Rhino's episodes were messed up.
RE: Complete Series sets of Transformers and G.I. Joe this summer?
B Ward you wiley ole' devil you, thats why you've been keeping quiet on the subject matter, GI Joe is by far my favorite toon of all time and I will be getting the complete boxset day one....and according to news its rumored its going to be exclusive packaging, and bonus features.....I got the real ghostbusters firehouse boxset day one and it is amazing....not to mention it came with the exclusive bonus disc and that insane firehouse boxset that you couldnt get by buying the single vol sets, so its the same principle, i have to get Joe the same way.
RE: Complete Series sets of Transformers and G.I. Joe this summer?
I am very excited about this Brian. I know that you guys will fix the G.I. Joe sets like you are fixing The Transformers sets. The Rino Joe sets had lots of problems as well. As I am sure you are aware of the added sound effects and the season 2 intro being on the season 1 sets after the first couple of episodes. I know you guys will do an amazing job and I cant wait to own them all. Shout has become my new favorite DVD release company. Keep up the amazing work. One question you might not be able to answer doesn't Hasbro now own the rights to M.A.S.K.? If so would those sets be just around the corner as well? One more question I am guessing that you plan to release the two 5 part Joe mini series as a single set? "What can I say I'm hooked"
RE: Complete Series sets of Transformers and G.I. Joe this summer?
Fantastic news! And I totally agree, trustkill, I just recently grabbed the Firehouse set of RGB as well. AMAZING! I'm really looking forward to see what Shout does with Transformers and G.I. Joe (my top 2 fave shows of the 80's) :)
P.S. Brian - I sent you an e-mail about a couple of things. Please get back to me when you can, thanks!
RE: Complete Series sets of Transformers and G.I. Joe this summer?
I give them a LOT of credit for releasing the COMPLETE series on DVD IN ADDITION to the individual sets. I bought the first three Rhino releases of GI JOE and was saddened they didn't get a chance to release the last set. At least now I know the complete DVD set of GI JOE is out there. If it has enough extras, I'll be happy to "double dip."
I hope if SHOUT! releases Jem and the Holograms, they consider a complete series release for the same reason. Especially since Jem probably doesn't have as big a following as GI JOE and TRANSFORMERS, both of which have been revived recently.
RE: Complete Series sets of Transformers and G.I. Joe this summer?
re: "...since Jem probably doesn't have as big a following as GI JOE and TRANSFORMERS..."
Actually, at TVShowsOnDVD, Jem has the biggest following among the Sunbow titles (per votes of registered members, saying they want to own a particular show on DVD). Joe is second, TF is third. My Little Pony is fourth, if you're wondering.
I imagine that Hasbro started with only TF and Joe because of the live feature films for both properties coming out this summer. I'm sure the biggest Jem fans hope that any delay for a new DVD license to be granted to Shout! (or anyone else) would be in the hopes that Hasbro would try to revive that franchise, too. Not sure if that's the situation; just talking in the wind here, really.
It will come down to this, though: if they're trying to revive the Jem franchise, Hasbro would try to wait and tie in with that. If not, or if it falls through, then once the TF and Joe releasing possibilities are exhausted, then it makes sense that they'll turn to the next most-obvious franchises. Jem and Pony would be them, in that case. Unless there's an additional legal hold-up somewhere, of course. Which there could be, I suppose...hasn't Christy Marx hinted that the rights to the show were pretty complicated? I figured she meant the same issues that affected Joe and TF, but maybe there's something in addition, esp. with regards to the music. I guess only time will tell.
RE: Complete Series sets of Transformers and G.I. Joe this summer?
Nice to see you on the board, David! I didn't realize Jem was so high in the polls, but it makes sense. It's one of the few "girly" cartoons that I know just as many guys who love it as girls (myself included). Maybe because it has that Sunbow "grittiness" to it that just gave the show far more depth than what it MIGHT have been in other hands. As for the music, would that really be an issue? Given that all the music was composed specifically for the show, rather than being licensed...
RE: Complete Series sets of Transformers and G.I. Joe this summer?
Oh, make no mistake... Songs, even when written and performed specifically for that show, often need licensing. A song is a song. And a songwriter likes to get paid. Most times, the studio will own the license to the song outright, but there have been times that we've had to license music written and recorded specifically for the series we're releasing.
So now that the President of Shout! has talked to the press about the releases, can we get a few more details about the masters and such used for G.I. Joe and Transformers?
also,
Does the complete series set of G.I. Joe include the two miniseries as well as the two regular seasons? I would think that at least this could be commented on.
Will all the special features from the Transformers and G.I. Joe first volumes also be included in the complete series sets?

TV_Fan, I can understand not wanting to invest full seasons of a show you're not quite committed to, but just so you know, most of the best episodes of TF and GI Joe occur in the later seasons, such as the latter half of TF's 2nd season and pretty much most of GI Joe's 2nd season. So you might owe it to yourself to perhaps jump in the good point and then go back one day to initial seasons, to get the full picture.

Puma's right GI Joes 2nd season is widely accepted as the pinnacle of greatness when compared to the entire collection of Joe toons.

"hasn't Christy Marx hinted that the rights to (Jem) were pretty complicated? I figured she meant the same issues that affected Joe and TF, but maybe there's something in addition, esp. with regards to the music. I guess only time will tell."
The rights are only complicated in terms of a revival. That's due to a number of factors. The dvd rights, as I understand, are not complicated at all. After all, Rhino released them and had the rights for some time.
Keeping this on topic, I wonder how the prices will run on the GI JOE complete series? That's a TON of eps!
Also, how do people feel about special packaging? I personally like something that sits nicely on a shelf. So I wouldn't want some crazy "foot locker complete series pack" or somesuch. What do you guys think?
RE: Complete Series sets of Transformers and G.I. Joe this summer?
I will certainly pick up a Transformers complete collection. I'd like the packaging to not be too big, personally. A nice slim case is preferable to me. Thank you, Shout! Factory for Oban and my (future) TF complete set!
