Bring together all the characters for like a reunion episode, release it to DVD and promote is as a sequel to the movie or something. Joel and Mike can go into the theatre with the robots, or could take turns. Like the two humans and robots suddenly wake up aboard the SOL, then reveals Doctor Forrester was cloned or something. And fit in the other cast somehow.
There's plenty of public domain titles they could choose from, if they find the right one. |

He suggested last year to Jim Mallon that they do a 20th anniversary show, an all new episode, and Mr. Mallon refused the offer. When Hodgson left the show, he left control of the MST3K property in the hands of Mallon, so no new MST3K and very little chance of any based on his answer to the idea of producing new material last year.
In response, Joel Hodgson started the all new and hilarious Cinematic Titanic. I've seen CT live and own all the DVDs they've released so far. No, it's not MST3K, but it is GREAT. Definitely check it out!

Well that's a slightly slanted view. As always, both sides remain candid about what was discussed and the fan base usually picks on Jim Mallon (which okay, maybe he does deserve some flack but still....) it's the wonderful internet fan base to presume there is some sort of conflict at hand and toss mud. Impartially speaking, BOTH sides expressed interest in doing so.
Now, if you take Joel's take on the story, if I recall what was floating around on the internet at the time, the response from Mallon's camp was tepid at best.
Mallon's side of the story is that while they were informally discussing the potential project, there were a lot of logistical issues that needed to be sorted out: Was it going to have Mike or Joel? Or both? Who was going to voice Tom Servo? Crow? Would Pearl be the mad scientist or would Clayton? TV's Frank or Dr. Erinhart? Shortly thereafter Cinematic Titanic picked up and nothing came about it, because Joel was busy getting that into gear.
That said, taking a look at the division between the MST3K camps, I think the big thing that is keeping this from happening is the fact that both camps are busy with their own projects, and there is a bit of competition there. Look at it this way, Mike Nelson got Rifftrax going first, and naturally Joel -- being the brain child of the concept -- wanted his piece of the riffing pie and started Cinematic Titanic to reap the resurgance in popularity. The internet and the inexpensive ways to do movie riffing has made doing so again economically possible...
And really, figure it this way, Mallon so far as I can tell doesn't have the foresight to do anything original anyway. It's been a good 10 years since MST3K produced anything original and he's been riding the coat tails of the brand. The best he could come up with were those god-awful MST3K cartoons about the bots, which were terrible. Look at the MST3K site now, and it's just a big plug for merchanidse with clips from the show. If he had any creative bones in his body, he'd be organizing a new MST3K cast or something and doing stuff on the internet just like the Rifftrax and CT folks are doing.
In fact, I bet Mallon would have totally went for doing a new MST3K reunion episode, I think that his vapid inability to come up with anything creative is probably the only stumbling block in the whole thing.I think that perhaps a lot of inaction and central focus on the marketability on Mallon's part was what made the project dead in the water over anything else.
MST3K is Mallon's meal ticket, any other way to get a few more bucks out of the franchise he's liable to do it. |

Member since: 5/21/2008 | | RE: MST3K: The Sequel | Seems like a reunion episode/film could happen if they just stopped what they're doing and got together. If it ever happens, I still hope they use my idea and give them all screen time. Give Joel and Mike turns, then maybe together with the robots. Perhaps Servo and Tom can change their voice adaptors or whatever, have two different voices in parts. Course I'm not a fan of Josh Weinstein's Servo voice.
If Jim brought in a new cast, they could set the film 1000 years later and introduce a new gang of villains, and a new guy they trap there, like a space ship mechanic. And he could find and a repair all the robots. Maybe the film can end with him catatonic and the robots reviving him. Like he just faints in the theatre when the movie ends and the robots panic to get him out of there.
If ever, I'd recommend the MASTER NINJA sequels, because I'd like to see them. Also FISTS OF FURY with Bruce Lee. I'm told lots like that movie, but my brother and I had a good time riffing it ourselves.
