If you go to a site called Screwattack.com, you can find personal video commentaries from the members of the site for The Legend of Zelda cartoon and some of its episodes. Since the episodes are in full, I'm guessing they have the DVD set from, where else? Shout Factory! Congrats, Brian. Your work has permeated the internet along with those nice reviews on of our members here does. It's not every episode yet, but they will get there. Isn't that cool? You might not fully agree with what they have to say, but at least there's someone other than us out there that likes these cartoons.
Lastly, it won't just end with Legend of Zelda. They'll be doing commentary on Sonic as well. As for which series, I don't know. |

I own these shows from Shout Factory:
Sonic the Hedgehog the complete series,
Adventures of Sonic the hedgehog season 1,
Sonic Underground seasons 1 and 2,
Mario Bros. 3 the complete series, Super Mario Bros. Super Show Seasons 1 and 2 |

The fan commentary idea ITSELF is a good one, but the proper way to do it would be to offer the commentaries ALONE as downloadable mp3's or something that people who own the DVDs can then download and listen to along with the show.
Offering the commentaries as a part of a video of the show is a copyright violation, pure and simple. Ditto if the show's audio can be heard during the commentaries.
As for my video reviews, notice that I only EVER show a short clip as an example of the show during my reviews. Under U.S. copyright law, it is perfectly legal for me to do so because I am providing a review/critique and using the clip solely for example purposes. I am not showing ENTIRE EPISODES as a "review," which would not fall under that category.
However, even just doing that I've been flagged once for copyright violation. In my review of the DVD set of Blackstar put out by BCI Eclipse, I was flagged by Entertainment Rights (the company that owns the rights to most of the Filmation library) because I showed the opening title sequence as a part of the review. Technically speaking, I did nothing wrong and was well within the bounds of copyright law to show the clip in my review - but I wasn't about to raise a big stink about one minute's worth of footage. Plus they allowed me to keep the video up (hell, I'm helping sales), provided they could plaster THEIR ads all over it. As such, I won't be using footage from Filmation shows again in my reviews.
All I can say I'm glad that DiC and Shout Factory are cooler about such things and can recognize that I'm actually trying to HELP by bringing more attention to their stuff. Ditto Media Blasters and World Events Productions (with my Voltron Reviews).
But yeah, anyway, posting full episodes, even with the audio replaced by commentaries, is a BIG no-no. I hope they consider the mp3 idea, as it would be a much better way to offer such a fan product. I'm sure they have the best of intentions, but are going about it in a not-so-good way. |
