Our sources at Shout! Factory has given us the scoop on what the extras will be on the next MST3K DVD set–”Mystery Science Theater 3000 XIV.”
They are:
• A new interview With “Soultaker” star and MST3K favorite Joe Estevez.
• Mike, Tom and Crow’s appearance on ESPN Classic’s “Cheap Seats Without Ron Parker.”
• A new interview with “Final Justice” writer/director Greydon Clark.
Also note: We’re told that inaccurate information about extras for this release is being circulated. If you see information about any extras other than these, it’s not accurate.
Hearing from Joe Estevez should be fun.

It would be fantastic if they could get that. |

As for Don Baker, I'm afraid he was a no-go on the interview front. One day, perhaps...

As for the pilot, it doesn't look like that's ever going to happen. There are folks from within the series and Best Brains that would prefer the first season be "lost", when it comes to its release on DVD. While it would be great to see the gang doing legit "First Thought Theater," they feel the more polished, scripted seasons are better representations of MST3K. Believe me, we tried for the 20th Anniversary collection.

As I recall, for a while they also were avoiding releasing any Season 1 episodes for home video, for much the same reason, but they did eventually release a few.

I'll be a slight voice of negativity here and say that I, for one, don't care about the interviews with the cast and directors of these films. In fact, I'd prefer never to hear from them, unless they are apologetic in an extremely amusing way. And even then, who cares what Joe Estevez thinks about anything? SOULTAKER wasn't a misstep along an routinely brilliant career for him, it was just another day at work making straight-to-VHS crap.
The Cheap Seats bonus feature is a home-run, however. This is the stuff we need more of, the archival MST3K stuff that the creative team produced. We still need those bumper segments, B Ward! |

Member since: 1/28/2008 | | RE: Volume 14 extras announced!!! | Well if it weren't for these people MST3K simply wouldn't exist. All we've heard for 20 years is mst3k's side of the story, i think its time we let them say what they thought about the movie. They don't have to appologize, if anything we should be on our knees thanking them and begging them to do these interviews.

Member since: 2/29/2008 | | RE: Volume 14 extras announced!!! | | I'll agree with Ethan in saying that I am MUCH more excited about the archived MST stuff than I am about new interviews. However, as Notundercover points out, you never know what you'll learn from interviews like these. I found the director's interview on Clonus very interesting, especially when he talked about how MSTies helped him win his lawsuit against DreamWorks. Besides, Shout has demonstrated repeatedly that they know how to get the most out of an interview. I think their current strategy is perfect: a little of each, archived and new, to keep everybody happy. |

Member since: 9/9/2008 | | RE: Volume 14 extras announced!!! | Eh, I'll admit they can be of moderate interest. Still, I don't know, I prefer to think of MST3K films as weird artifacts. In some cases, like Eegah! and Manos, I've been curious enough to investigate about the behind the scenes circumstances of the films. Mostly though, I don't care. And the idea of being thankful that these films were made is a bit odd, if you ask me. "Sh*t" happens. There's no need to thank the anus.
Sorry for being crude.
And let's not forget that it's possible SHOUT FACTORY is actually spending money on these interviews. All I'm saying is, if there's a budget, let's spend the money on the family. New interviews? Get Mike, Bill, Kevin, Joel, Trace or Frank to talk specifically about those episodes and give THEM the money. Or just put out the stuff that already exists, like we've been discussing in other threads. |

Member since: 1/12/2007 | | RE: Volume 14 extras announced!!! | I don't know. I kinda liked the interviews. Like someone else said, we've spent 20 years listening to one side of the story. I imagine bringing the gang back in to speak about specific episodes would become monotonous. There's only so many ways you can say, "this film was awful, so we picked it."
We're working harder and harder on putting those things you guys want out. There's just the problem of getting it. Some of it, certain people don't want released. So we're trying to make sure we get as much as possible that is possible to release. And we're trying to wear down the powers that be on the rest.

Member since: 5/9/2008 | | RE: Volume 14 extras announced!!! | I think that including interviews with actors or producers of movies featured on MST3K is fine (provided of course that the interviewee is actually interesting, and hopefully has a sense of humor). And I agree that simply interviewing the cast repeatedly would get a little tiring after a while, and probably tell us little that, after 20 years, we don't already know. But what would be interesting would be if Shout could include any other work by the cast that they did either before or after MST3K, like Joel's "TV Wheel" pilot which never sold. And Brian, thanks for you guys trying to wear down the powers that be to get some of the unreleased "gems" out to the fans. There are almost 100 episodes still unreleased, including some fan favorites that I'm sure you guys know about. Good luck.

Member since: 3/21/2008 | | RE: Volume 14 extras announced!!! | I think it be cool if you had Joel, Mike and the crew do intros for each episode as their MST charaters and do a little sketches around them (like how they did it for the Rhino Vol 10.2 thingie).
Also karooke of theme song would be nice. |
