Jerry Butler, aka “The Ice Man,” is an American soul singer and songwriter. He is best known for his cool demeanor while singing intensely powerful and emotional lyrics. He was also one of the original lead singers of the R&B vocal group, The Impressions.
Born and raised in Chicago, IL, Butler grew an early appreciation for music and the church. He performed in his church choir with
Curtis Mayfield, as well as sang in a gospel quartet known as the Northern Jubilee Gospel Singers.
Butler has had much success with many hits from both his vocal group and solo career. Some of these include writing the song "For Your Precious Love" (which is ranked #327 on
Rolling Stone's list of The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.) In addition, he co-wrote, with
Otis Redding, "I've Been Loving You Too Long." Butler’s solo career had a line of hits, including "He Will Break Your Heart," which was a top 10 success. He has also become formally inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
