Formed in 1952, The Dells were an R&B group who incorporated different musical genres, including doo-wop, jazz, soul, disco and contemporary rhythm and blues.

The leader of the group was very well-known and regarded artist Johnny Carter. Their first recorded hit, "Oh What a Night," peaked in the top five of the R&B singles chart and is ranked #260 on Rolling Stone's list of The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time. Carter passed away August 21, 2009.
