Johnny Winter is an American blues and rock artist who is considered among the greatest guitarists of all time. In addition to wielding an axe, Winter is known as a singer, songwriter and producer.
Winter began performing at a very young age on local television shows and began his recording career at the age of 15. His first album was with his band, Johnny and the Jammers, entitled,
School Day Blues. In 1968,
The Progressive Blues Experiment was released, after which he and his band performed at many rock festivals, including 1969's Woodstock.
His biggest influences include
B.B. King and Bobby Bland. Johnny would often tell stores about how he dreamed of performing with
Muddy Waters. In 1977, his dream came true and he produced Waters' album,
Hard Again. He later produced the follow-ups
I'm Ready and
King Bee. Together, they released multiple Grammy Award winning recordings.
His recent Grammy nominated album,
I'm A Bluesman, has only added to his multiple successes.
