Designing Women debuted in 1986 on CBS and ran for seven seasons. The half-hour sitcom was set in Atlanta, Georgia and focused on the lives of four Southern women with varied personalities who ran their own interior design firm.
The original cast of Designing Women included Annie Potts as Mary Jo, Jean Smart as Charlene, Delta Burke as Suzanne and Dixie Carter as Julia. Jean Smart left the show after its fifth season and was replaced by Jan Hooks. Julia and Suzanne Sugarbaker, sisters and complete opposites, launch Sugarbaker Designs with the help of their friends. Julia manages the company while Suzanne does little work but is a host of hilarious interactions in the office. Mary Jo, the designer, and Charlene, the air-headed office manager, round out the cast.
While the show was a comedy at its heart, it also touched upon hot topics including homosexuality, racism, dating clergy, obesity and spousal abuse. The show continues to resonate with a variety of different audiences.
