Flamboyant and classy, outspoken and smart, Rhoda Morgenstern was an icon for the 1970s in fashion and attitude. From the character’s beginnings on The Mary Tyler Moore Show in 1970 till the end of Rhoda in 1978, actress Valerie Harper never stopped entertaining audiences with her vivacious personality.
Living in New York City, Rhoda must deal with her sister, mother and father, an overbearing Jewish family who provide both irritation and support. The spin-off series also introduces Joe Gerard, the character who later becomes Rhoda’s husband.
The series ran for five seasons, winning two Emmy awards and two Golden Globes. Supported by viewers as well as critics, Rhoda surpassed The Mary Tyler Moore Show in ratings. Rhoda served as a role-model for women of the 70s who still resonates to this day.
