ABOUT
Rock and psychedelia band, Sweet, formed in the 1970s at the height of experimental music and exploded into the Glam Rock scene. With various influences ranging from 1960s bubblegum pop groups like The Archies and The Monkees to heavy rock groups like The Who, the group mixed various styles in order to produce songs that were both vocally harmonic as well as instrumentally engaging.
Sweet’s biggest hits include “Ballroom Blitz” and “The Man with the Golden Arm.” “Funny Funny” was their first international hit which led to their long standing following in the UK. In 1976, Sweet released Give Us A Wink and toured heavily in the U.S. They achieved moderate success in the States but continued to be stars in Germany, the UK, the Netherlands and Australia.
The band’s structure changed many times from the 1970s to the present. Originally formed by Brian Connolly (lead vocals), Frank Torpey (guitar), Steve Priest (bass) and Mick Tucker (drums), Andy Scott later took over the lead vocals after Connolly left the band. After 1982, many of the original members of the band had moved on and new faces joined to carry on the Sweet name. This band continues to tour in Europe and South America. Steve Priest has also formed another group of the same name and began touring in the U.S. in 2008.
