Country musician Gary Stewart won over both critics and audiences with his distinctive vibrato voice and unrivaled songwriting. His outlaw country sound granted him Time magazine’s title, “King of Honky Tonk.” Born in 1944 in Jenkins, Kentucky, he learned guitar and piano at an early age and began touring with local bands as a teenager. After his family moved to Florida, he found work at an airplane factory, while continuing to play in country bands by night. His 1975 album, Out of Hand, reached the #6 slot on the country Billboard chart and is regarded as one of the best country albums of the decade. In 2003, Stewart took his own life several weeks after his wife of 43 years died of pneumonia.
