ABOUT
Born in 1950 in San Antonio, Texas, Rosie Flores grew up absorbing rich Mexican American culture and musical styles. At the age of 12, she blended those influences with surf, rockabilly, blues and Southern California country rock when her family moved to San Diego. This exposure to a myriad of styles and genres resulted in her unique and engaging brand of alternative country and rockabilly as a singer, songwriter and guitar player.
As a teenager, Flores formed her first band, Penelope’s Children. Soon after, she led Rosie and the Screamers until moving to the Screaming Sirens, an all-female punk group. She released her solo debut in 1987 and moved to Hightone Records in 1992 for her second release. She joined Butch Hancock’s band on lead guitar for a short while, and has performed alongside noted musicians such as Marshall Crenshaw, Joe Ely, Ray Campi, Wanda Jackson, and Janis Martin.
Flores currently lives in Austin, where August 31st was recently declared Rosie Flores Day by the Austin City Council. An appearance on PBS’ Austin City Limits brought her much-deserved increased popularity, and in 1999, she won Best Country Artist from the L.A. Weekly Music Awards.
