ABOUT
Buddy Miller, born in Ohio in 1952, has successfully established himself in the country music scene as an insightful singer, songwriter, musician, and producer. Known for having a predilection for specific recording environments, Miller prefers his living room to a professional studio. In it, you’re more than likely to catch him strumming either a vintage Wandre electric guitar or his signature Fender acoustic model.
Miller got his start in the early 1960s playing an upright bass for a high school bluegrass outfit. He soon traveled with an acoustic guitar, mapping the dusty roads of America, until he arrived in New York City. There, he met Shawn Colvin and the two started the Buddy Miller Band. Eventually, his passion for music brought him to Nashville, where he found work providing session guitar and vocals on albums by Jim Lauderdale, Victoria Williams, and Heather Myles. Miller later toured with Emmylou Harris as the lead guitarist and backing vocalist for her band.
Miller’s music is very heartfelt and personal, often fairly spiritual in nature. His self-produced solo debut, 1995’s Your Love and Other Lies, brought public awareness to his talent. His 2001 collaboration with his wife, Buddy and Julie Miller, was nominated for a Best Contemporary Folk Album Grammy. In 2005, the Americana Music Association awarded his Universal United House of Prayer the Album of the Year, and the first track, “Worry Too Much,” Song of the Year.
Not limited to recording and releasing only his own music, Miller has helped many musicians behind-the-scenes in the studio. As a producer he has facilitated artists such as Jimmie Dale Gilmore, Emmylou Harris, and the Vigilantes of Love. In 2006, Solomon Burke recorded Nashville in Miller’s house of the same location. He has made numerous guest appearances on albums and has shared the stage with Linda Ronstadt, Steve Earle, Patty Griffin, Gillian Welch, David Rawlings, and many more. His songs have been covered by the Dixie Chicks, Lee Ann Womack, Brooks & Dunn, Jim Lauderdale, and Hank Williams III, helping maintain Miller’s contemporary longevity. Currently, Buddy Miller is touring with Robert Plant and Alison Krauss, making up part of their backing band for the ‘Raising Sand’ tour.
