On the prowl since 1991,
Sonic the Hedgehog is a force to be reckoned with! The mascot character from the popular gaming company is responsible for turning SEGA into a leading video game corporation during the 16-bit era, selling more than 45 million copies, to date. The hero of the video game series, designed to rival the flagship Nintendo character
Mario, spun into action with a vengeance and by 1993 had earned his own series of popular comics, cartoons and books.
Sonic made his television debut in September ‘93 on two series,
Sonic the Hedgehog and
Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog. Equally popular, both shows followed the escapades of the wily mammal and his attempts to defeat the evil Dr. Robotnik. However, in an effort to please a mixture of crowds,
Adventures placed emphasis on humor and comedy while
Sonic was slightly darker and more serious.
In August of 1999, the video game and cartoon icon came blasting back to television with a brand new twist. In the third animated series, Sonic (voiced by
Family Matters’ Jaleel White) - along with his siblings Sonia and Manic - battles the evil Dr. Robotnik, while making time for his real passion . . . their rock band, Sonic Underground.
After years of running faster than the speed of sound, the spunky Sonic has yet to slow down. To this day, the blue anamorphic hedgehog is one of the world’s best-known and most loved characters. Recognized the world over, his popularity hasn’t waned. In 2005, Sonic the Hedgehog was one of the first characters inducted into the Walk of Game in San Francisco, California, officially claiming his spot in gaming history.
