The Evolution of a Cover - Mott the Hoople

For most of us, we rarely get to witness the full scope of the creative process that goes into the creation of a CD cover: We just see the final cover, but typically there are a number of design comps that get created before the final version that goes into mass-production.

Early this April, Shout! Factory and independent Seattle design firm
Modern Dog
set off on a journey together to create an eye-popping cover for a 2-CD set entitled "Old Records Never Die: The Mott the Hoople/Ian Hunter Anthology," set for release late August.

This is a gallery of some of the comps from the first round presented by
Modern Dog
which were - needless to say - incredible.

While we were awestruck by the variety of creative directions, we still wanted to see a new treatment but liked one from the first batch enough to keep it as a possibility. In our meetings to whittle down the choices, there are always lots of opinions. Sometimes we go several rounds and Shout!'s creative staff works closely with the art directors to refine a look. Can you guess which one below will grace the final CD? Which one would you have chosen?
